1. Or - an opportunity for lots of people who missed them the first time round to get see them, and a chance for the band themselves to put the demons of Live Aid and the Atlantic Records concert behind them.
2. Yay! But... despite Newcastle being the location of LZ's first-ever UK gig, they aren't showing the film anywhere near here. Boo!
3. Nice to see he's in a cantankerous mood. He's right. That genre plagarises itself left, right and centre, and has done for generations. It's nothing new. (sic) The album is great, btw.
4. Nice one! Enjoy it... I think you owe me a pint.
5. I've used the HD's predecessor, the HS, and I now own a pair of HS's - as far as I know, there's not a night-and-day difference between them. They're amazing cabs. I can do most of my gigs with the 2x10 - the 4x10 is incredibly powerful, punchy, clear - all the usual clichés.
6. Just read that the O2 reunion show is about to come out on DVD. Yahoo!
7.
This is interesting to me - in what way? Also, it was actually a random live recording of Zep in concert I was referring to originally, not one of their recorded albums - nonetheless, I'm interested in your comment re mixing as it's something I can speak with little authority about!
Was it a boot? Which one? I'm basically a fan of the 70s rhythm-section-and-up mix. Fat and warm, and everything has room to breathe. You can feel the weight behind the bass. Modern production is generally sparkly and clear, but dense and woefully undynamic. Look at recent Rush stuff, for example. Someone recently pointed me at a new record by... Porcupine Tree, was it? Not a fan of the music, but the sound was incredible. The guy that produced that also did the new Ian Anderson CD and it's equally involving. All IMO, of course.
8.
Not forgetting the fretless P-bass on Bron-Y-Aur stomp. So sexy!
That was an electric upright - he used the fretless P on In My Time Of Dying...
9. Loads of times - it'll be fine. He may well have a slightly different internal clock to your regular drummer - you'll adapt quick enough.
10.
There's nothing amazing about his tone at all. It's just bass-heavy. You can get that sound from virtually any bass through any amp with any kind of strings.
I kind-of agree. It's a great tone, but there's nothing mystical about it. It's great because of the production - records aren't mixed like this any more.
11. JPJ has repeatedly stated he used rounds back in the early days of Zeppelin. I reckon he's mistaken. :-)
12. Bizarre! I'm not sure if it could be relevant, but there's a common-ish problem with Walkabouts which results in the signal dropping out - the FX loop jacks oxidise over. Shoving jacks in and out of the send and return a few times to clear them solves it. Maybe give it a shot?
13. Hi all I did a dep with The Junco Partners last night, who are Newcastle's R'n'B godfathers. They've been around since the 60s, and even backed Howlin' Wolf on a tour. So.. it was quite a privilege to play with them.. and a lot of fun. Here's a tune... Precision, flats and a Mesa Walkabout. I wouldn't use a Promethean for rehearsing with a loud metal band - or any small combo, for that matter.
15.
What's the difference between a tribute band and another production of Macbeth ?
If you were to ask Bilbo, I'm sure the reply would be: A: One is a bloody tragedy, the other is a play by Shakespeare.
16.
I don't think anyone is suggesting force feeding any art form to people. All we suggest is that leaving things to market forces seems to result in everyone looking to the common denominator and everything getting blander and blander (like cable/satelite TV - 800+ channels of fluff rather than infinite variation). I know so many people who aren't catered for by mainstream arts/entertainment provision because everyone is trying to corner the same section of the market; namely young people out on the piss trying to get laid.
Popular music is over 100 years old, Bilbo. Music with artistic integrity hasn't been snuffed out in that time, and I doubt it ever will be. Stop stressing about it - your tide pool is safe.
17. Ibanez Promethean.
18.
"your sociopolitical stance has made me question the way I live my life" - too earnest for me and just a little bit scary.
Yes indeed.
19.
tis a sad world where image out weighs talent
I see what you did there. *does nose / pointy thing*
20. I've played weddings with three of my previous originals bands. If the bride and groom are fans, and it makes them happy, then... why not. Back to the wider discussion - a good song is a good song. As a bass player, I couldn't care less who wrote it.
21.
PS none of this actually matters
Yip.

Yep - there does seem to be a few failures. I had a problem with my Promethean (the original model)- the input jack went a bit wiggly causing to it to cut out. A tech sorted it for a few quid, putting a better jack in to stop it happening again. It's been fine ever since. I can understand why people are reluctant to take a punt on them, but I'd encourage people to try. They're amazing little things.
23. Also, if you're on Facebook, search for 'North East Bass Bin' and pop a post in there.
