I picked up a used silverface Walkabout in excellent condition on here very recently, and can testify to the positive comments above- it's a fantastic sounding head, and puts out a lot of volume through the right cab, even with an 8ohm load. I own a pair of early-build Barefaced Compacts, and it can keep up with my band pretty easily using just one of them! It wipes the floor with the Shuttle 6.0 I used to own a while back for volume and weight of tone... The fan on mine is very quiet, even when I'm playing at very low volume in my living room. I paid £550 for mine including shipping, and consider that to be an absolute bargain...
The fan thing is weird. I've read a number of comments over on TB from people who are bothered by the fan, and quite a few people have swapped them for quieter PC fans. I've had two Walkabouts, and the fans on both have been barely audible - and I play a lot of 'pin drop' venues, so if they were loud, I'd notice. I wonder if Etienne & I have just been lucky..? Also, I did a couple of gigs over the weekend - one with an acoustic-ish trio where the bass is the main rhythm instrument, and another rock'n'roll gig with a decent PA. For both gigs I was using a single Berg 2x10. With the para EQ rolled all the way down to 30Hz, and backed off the maximum (-15db) With those rumbly lows shelved out, neither the amp nor the cab had to work particularly hard. It was a joy.. such a tight, punchy, fat sound. Walkabout. A beautiful head.

Discussion after rehearsal last night
wateroftyne replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
Just to clarify, I get on with my drummer very well After our rehearsal last night, we had a chat about how the band is going etc. We both agree that the new guitarist is very talented but we are not progressing as well as at the start. He made comments about my playing, like it has become more root based 'in the pocket' stuff. We used to be a lot more 'free form' - both knowing what the other will do and playing to it. It made me realise that I have lost my way a little. Although we are a covers band, I usually made my own bass lines (unless they are central to the tune). I seem to have lost that confidence and it is rather confusing. When practicing on my own, I let the music dictate. Now, when I rehearse with the band, I end up sticking with root / 5th and grooving to the beat. Any ideas or advice on how to break free from this durge? Cheers Brian
It seems to me like you have found your way, not lost it. -
Big walkabout lover here. How loud is your band? I'm back to the WA after spells with the TC RH450 and the Streamliner 900, and don't feel I'm lacking volume or headroom in comparison, even when I'm using a single 8ohm 2x10. That said, none of my bands are ear-earsplittingly loud. We're sensible. No reliabiluty issues - the earlier red-faced models apparently had problems with the effects jack, but it's an easy fix. Generally, they're Mesa, so the build quality is excellent. After finding the class-D heads anaemic, it's a relief to come back to the WA which is a great balance of weight and tone.

Gumtree 1973 Tele Bass-bargain?
wateroftyne replied to yorks5stringer's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It's hard to put a price on it 'cos there's not many about, but the humbucker 'teles aren't particularly sought after. £1500 is... towards the top-end, I would say. -
Overwater Original Series (four and/or five-string models)
wateroftyne replied to Kees_SoS's topic in Bass Guitars
I played a couple of RC customs owned by Rod Clements. They were beautiful... I sold one on eBay for him a few years ago, and he ended up keeping the other. You can hear the fretless here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsHvFOAGJ8k -

Ta fer that. '..music had more soul when several people played together.' He's right, you know.

Legion is clearly a little confused. As everyone knows, Fender are evil soul-sucking dinosaurs, who only have their own interests at heart. Oh, wait...

As far as genuine advice goes...
I'm glad you posted that! I was just contemplating the vast, endless wasteland that is jazz/fusion. Eww! Eurgh!
Wretched, isn't it?

Amy Winehouse on Arena BBC 4 last night
wateroftyne replied to yorks5stringer's topic in General Discussion
I saw a bit of that, too. Lovely - it really gave the songs a chance to breathe. Canny bass player too... -
Do they do a non-elevator music version?

FWIW, it's not a lack of bass I had problems with - it was more that the dynamics down there weren't to my tastes.
-
It's also worth pointing out that this thread is a question about the dynamics of the amp, not how loud it is.

I
its the gigs where people pay to get in, sound, lighting, security, bar staff, EVERYONE gets paid except the band
I suppose it's because playing in a band is fun, whereas working behind a bar isn't. (FWIW, I rarely play for nowt, but I can understand why people do)
-
Music is enjoyable. People like doing enjoyable things for nothing. This upsets people who want to get paid for doing said enjoyable thing. ...there's no answer, really.
Funny thing is, the same people who now slate it loved the amp for a year, but got bored and moved onto the next big thing. Now it seems the next big sellers are tube pre amps, a slight move towards full tube amps, etc.
You could just refer to me by name. I stuck with it for a year, because there's that many controls on it, it took me a year to exhaust all the possibilities. Seriously though - I was busy, most of my gigs used FOH, and I just didn't know what to replace it with until the Streamliner came out.
... and tone is right there for me, (a low mid kicker). If you want huge sub bass, no, it isn't for you, but then again there are many amps that avoid huge low end as you need the speakers to handle it.
Interestingly, I thought it was anaemic and the Streamliner had far more low-mid kick, but it's all subjective. I detest sub-bass. i really do. But I expect a bit of tactile feedback from the drivers if I play ghost notes, etc. The TC (and the Sreamliner, to a lesser extent) just squished 'em all out.

What a hoot. Depped with The Junco Partners, Newcastle's oldest (in so many ways) R'n'B band. They've been going since the 60s, and backed Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King back in the day. Both the drummer and bass player are out of action at the moment, so it was the first time I'd ever played with the drummer, too. No chance for rehearsals, or personal introductions. Just... '1, 2, 3, 4....'. Good turn-out, great fun from start to finish. Here's a tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMdVGr8m4vE
Then loud still means loud.
Absolutely. But then... my six-year-old daughter is deafening, but she'd be a hopeless bass amplifier.
