1. I certainly wouldn't stump up for it without going to see it first, but that's only sensible. Body looks fine to me, as does the rest of it. My spidey sense ain't tinglin'.
2. Based on what I can see in the photos (always the caveat) it looks right to me. Pickguard (hard to fake) is correct, bridge has elongated G screw, tuners are correct, logo correct... I'd make the trip if I was in the market for one.
3.
If I were wanting a US item from overseas, I'd have to go with guitarcenter.com in the used dept. Anything else would be either too expensive or too dicey. When you set up your search, uncheck "used" and check "vintage." I don't know how they handle overseas shipments. You will find many good deals there. You can call the GC that holds that item and ask for an "in-hand" description, that is, they'll hold it and examine it and you ask all the questions you want. I plan on buying everything I can from GC used.
Is this the same Guitar Center that sold someone a Ritter that turned out to be a Chinese knockoff, despite them being told by the owner of the original? Anyway, that's a nice looking early 70s P in the OP.
4. Great little box, these. SansAmp killers.
5. Ta, Chris - never used a 400+ so I didn't try to guess.
6. I haven't used a 400+, so take this with a pinch of salt, but... the Walkabout has magic going on, and 'weight' that I haven't experienced with any lightweight amp (or any solid state / hybrid amp, for that matter). It's quite unique in Mesa's line-up - have a rummage around on TalkBass to see if there's any comparisons with the 400+.
7. For any Burman fans who might have missed it...
8. I don't think the Classics are prone to failure. If you like it, get another.
9.
That's debatable. Have met plenty of originals bands who gig whatever they can get week by week.
I don't doubt that there are loads of bass players gigging regularly in original bands. I'm one of them. But... there'll be far more playing cover gigs, more regularly. I guarantee it.
10.
Exactly - there are many such posts, usually very popular, whereas there are very few posts about original music. Unless I'm missing something
The reality is that cover bands gig more. So, there's more to talk about.
11.
Here's one: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/189766-my-top-ten-most-played-songs-by-pub-function-covers-bands/page__fromsearch__1
That's a thread about covers versions, posted in by people who play in cover bands. Am I missing something?
12.
For what it's worth when I was gigging I only played originals because I had (and still have) absolutely no interest whatsoever in learning other peoples songs. I now do neither because I hate all the crap that goes with being in a band.
Being in a band with (probably) a bunch of numpties who write lousy songs will do that to you...
13.
It sometimes seems so and maybe that's why I always feel a bit different on here
'Different'...? Can you give an example?
14. Hi all There's not a lot of content re: his legendary amplification, but I thought some of you might like to see the man in the flesh, so to speak: http://youtu.be/3kcMlRBBA20
15. That's a lot of gear to achieve such muddy indistinct tones... for both Ged & Lerxst.
16.
A single ten and 200W...really? Which is it; small, loud or deep?
Some AER owners will tell you it's all three. I've never heard one, but I can't wait to hear the laws of physics being broken.
17. Y'know, I have nowt planned, and the Tyne is one of my favourite gigs, so I might just pop along for a bit...
18. it looks fab, but the lack of a removable head kills it for me. But then... if it's on a par with the 5110 (more reliable, even!) it'll be a hell of a combo for £300.
19. JPJ has never played bass on Since I've Been Loving You. Even the studio recording was bass pedals...
20. I'd recommend a cab with a tight / shelved bottom end. The STL is BIG down low.
21.
JPJ was brill - thunderous tone - but I was disappointed that he played keys with foot pedals for bass on several numbers - I especially wanted to hear his bass on Since I've Been Loving You.
He's never played bass on that number with Zeppelin... or Kashmir, or Trampled Underfoot, or Four Sticks, etc. He's a hell of a bass pedal player, though. :-)
22. It's my usual response to BB threads, but if you like 'em, hunt out Levon Helm's two albums with the RCO All-Stars. Great records from what was soon to become the Blues Brothers Band.
23. I've been in contact with him before. S'up?
24. Loud drummers who don't listen are as much use as drummers who don't drive. Avoid them all.
25.
Excellent. It reminded me of this little story: A businessman was on holiday on a tropical island paradise and was walking along the beach when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large fish. The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman explained it took less than an hour or so. The businessman asked why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The fisherman said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs so why would he need anymore? The businessman then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time? The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife , stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full, busy and enjoyable life." The businessman scoffed, "Look, I'm a highly educated and experienced businessman and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat and catch more fish than you need, whcih you could sell to make money. With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. As the money rolls in and Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor. Eventually you could open your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. Of course, you would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to the city in order to run your new business empire from a corporate HQ." The fisherman asked, "But how long will this all take?" To which the businessman replied, "15-20 years." "But what then?" The businessman laughed and said," That's the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions." "Millions? Then what?" The businessman said, "Then you would be able to retire and move to a small coastal fishing village where you could sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take a siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."
There's a sequel: Everybody on the island was so jealous of the fisherman, they started doing the same thing. Eventually the market was flooded with fish, and the fisherman lost his only source of income. He retrained in IT support, and now works in a local call center.
