Neil Young... is a dreadful guitarist and his singing isn't much better.. Dylan is also a dreadful guitarist who can't sing
I strongly disagree. (Bob Dylan sometimes *chooses* not to sing, but he can)

Lightweight amps - clarity in power ratings
The only lesson here is that watts mean nothing.
...unless you're a marketing department. -
I have all three - my personal page, a group (for a bass discussion group) and band pages one, two and three. The key difference that I can see between group and page is - with a page, you can post as the page, creating a persona for your band. I prefer it this way...

Lightweight amps - clarity in power ratings
If your ears are telling you that an amp is loud enough then who cares what the spec sheet says.
This is true, but of course it's only useful if you can physically try before you buy. It would also be nice to be able to guage how much of the 'loudness' is achieved via clever compression & signal processing. -
I think the TC 450's turned out to be 256 watts the 750's quite a bit more. Thats why I wondered about the modules as someone would of made that link earlier.
No - I think the 750 still came in at under 300w. -

Actually, I'm getting my wires crossed. I don't think the TC uses the B&O module. The RH750 is 267w, I think...? -
still sounds wrong IMO, where are the resident experts when you need them...........
The chap who tested my amp is an expert if that helps. Not being able to remember the figures he quoted to the exact watt is my fault. -

wateroftyne replied to wateroftyne's topic in Amps and Cabs
Actually, it might have been 320w at 4ohm and 130w at 8ohm. The figures were around about that, though. -
Assuming it's Neil Peart being referred to in a previous post, his net worth is pretty much the same as Alex and Geddy's.

Whilst I have genuine sympathy for the OP (being a bigger-boned chap myself), I'm surprised at some of the responses here. Assuming the band are a bunch of ambitious young'uns, and assuming the label have a bit of clout and know what they're doing, (a big 'if', I know), you can hardly blame them for wanting a crack at the big time, however misguided it may or may not be.
I have never heard of a band that went on to do any good after being treacherous like this.
Pete Best might be able to help you there...

Hi all I've just picked up my trusty Promethean head up from the Tech chap, after I thought it had developed a fault. (It turns out the amp is fine - it was a dodgy speaker cable). Anyway, while trying to recreate the problem he ran various tests, and told me it puts out 330w into 4ohm and 120w into 8ohm. ...this is an amp that's marketed as 500w. Now, I have no problems with the output of the amp - it's very loud, and Mr. Tech was very impressed with it. But, assuming most class-D manufacturers are doing what TC do, i.e. being economical with the truth, isn't it time they followed EBS's lead, and stopped inflating the ratings?

Not before time :-) Of the flats I've used, the La Bella FLs and (more recently) the cheaper Lakland Flats ring my bell. They're not too high tension - the La Bellas are the lowest of the two.

The decline of Bass player magazine
wateroftyne replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Post-internet, bass magazines only existed for reading on the bog or train. Smartphones have rendered them completely redundant. -
It works... do it! But.. get Howard the Bass Doc to make it for you. He's got some lovely tort in at the moment which is a lot less pepperoni than the usual.
Headlong Flight from about 3-50 in to about 5-20 is the best bit of music they have done in years, Can't believe that 3 sixty year olds can write stuff like that. I ring our PA out to that section and everyone always ask's who it is.
Out of interest, I don't have it to hand but is that the instrumental break where it's just bass, drums and guitar with no layered overdubs? For my money its the best bit of Rush we've had In a long time. They sound like a band. They should bin the layering for the next record, instead of hiding weak material under slabs of fatness.
The whole UK plug and socket system is designed around safety. Like the minimum distance between the edge of the plug and the pins so that you don't accidentally touch the pins while plugging/unplugging it. And how some of the length of the Live and Neutral pins is wrapped in plastic for the same reason. Even the placement of the pins in the plug, the Live wire is the shortest so that if the cable is pulled out of the plug while it's plugged in the Live is the first to be disconnected and the Earth, being the longest, is the last.
This makes me proud to be British. When I read it, Pomp and Circumstance played on my internal jukebox.

Class D. Going back to the traditional ways now...
I've got a GK Fusion 550 and a GK MB Fusion. I thought having got the MB originally as a back up it might replace the big guy as first choice - but no. Back up it will remain. Definitely not the tone though. I can get a great tone out of the MB - especially channel B when its clipping. And its not volume as the MB is plenty loud. Not easy to describe (and I think WoT has alluded to something similar) - I just think the 550 has more "grunt" or "heft" to the sound. It seems "thicker" if that makes any sense. There's something going on with the dynamics when I'm playing that I prefer over the MB.
Yip... it's almost like there's a dynamic sacrifice to maintain the loudness when played at volume. The RH450 output 'scandal' (for want of a better word) reinforced my suspicions. It's likely that Genz et al. use similar power management - after all, it's the same power module. It's fair to say that some people are bothered by it, but not others. -
"Geddy Lee’s bass sound is a combination of five channels, which represent various aspects of an entire bass sound, and run from clean to distorted-beyond-all-reason. The two main components of his sound are an Avalon DI and a Palmer DI. The Avalon is warm with a punchy midrange, and the Palmer is super clear with an extended low end. The last three channels are all distorted to one degree or another. There’s an instantiation of Eleven dialed up to sound like an old Fender Bassman—slightly distorted, but not crazy. There’s a SansAmp, which is more distorted and further down in the mix. Then there’s an Orange amp, which we run off to a bass cab backstage and throw another Palmer PDI-03 on. It’s cranked wide open and is preposterously distorted. It sits in the back of the bass mix. All of this gets sub-grouped, compressed, and run into an instantiation of Waves API 550A EQ."
That's a lot of effort to achieve such a crappy tone...!

Class D. Going back to the traditional ways now...
wateroftyne replied to Clarky72's topic in General Discussion
I've said it before, but I think there's a characteristic of the B&O modules these amps use, either tonal or dynamic, that doesn't sit right with me. I can't quite put my finger on it. -
