Tuition - what was your approach to learning
wateroftyne replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
He said one thing that kind of crystallised everything music related to me, play what you sing. *snip* The other thing he unintentionally taught me is that I don't need lessons, that I should follow my own path to musical enlightenment, and it's all based on desire. I am comfortable with my playing and my ears, I improve them in my own way, desire alone leads me. I listen, I play, I adapt, I get excited, I learn, I apply. Repeat ad nauseam.
Same fer me - I was lucky enough to work this out for myself, way back. I'm not discounting a lesson or two at some point if I ever get stuck in a rut, but it ain't happened yet. -
Led Zepellin could probably have taught Ms Kaye a thing or two about claiming credit for other peoples work, given that on Led Zep II alone, they pinched one Muddy Waters song, one Howlin' Wolf song and one Willie Dixon song without crediting them!
FWIW, I don't think Muddy, Wolf or Willie credited who they pinched those songs from, either. :-)
He has an incredable sound from whatever bass he uses and sometimes wonder if its his own making or the sound guy that getting it set up for him. Maybe his personal engineer or bass tech sets it all up - who knows ? MORE DETAIL PLEASE GEDDY
I'm not Geddy, but here's more detail.
Exactly... or not. I'd say there's a bunch of reasons to like either... mesa are pretty legendary, and that might have as much to do with it as the choice of power section class. YMMV.
YMMV indeed - my comment was based on about three years of playing different Class D heads that all use the same B&O module, and feeling they all lacked the same... thing. Whatever it is. I can't quite place it.

Classic Albums - 2112 & Moving Pictures...

The DVD is well worth getting.
As it happens... Thunderfunk aren't class D which is one of the best things about them..and there are many, IMO. They weight in at around 20lbs.
Similarly, the Mesa Walkabout is small, fairly light, and not Class D. And all the better for it.. Ooh, controversy, etc.

The only time I don't need the P tone is when I very occasionally need a bit of bridge pickup honk, so I bought the Roscoe Beck to cover all basses (so to speak). I really don't need my '71 J any more, but I can't sell it. Every time I look at it, my heart misses a beat and I go weak at the knees.

You've just realised what everyone realises eventually.

Lush. Howard's Fender 2x15 is glorious. It has no tweeter, but you can get ear-spitting top-end out of it.

Because Furniture Village told Google that they want their advert to be shown to people like you - either demographic, or search history, or what-have-you.

I listened to it relentlessly when it first came out... I haven't for a couple of weeks, maybe more, and I can't remember most of it. It just hasn't clicked with me. Squashed dynamics, fussy arrangements, weak melodies. Having said that, I'll have another go this week.
I'm curious, how much nail varnish do you have lying around the place?
It's hard to believe, but some blokes who use the Internet have girlfriends or wives. The really lucky ones have both...
I wouldn't miss any of the mods if they died tomorrow
Ouch..!
It really isn't that much fun being a mod anyway.
Amen to that. The best way you can 'give a bit back' to Basschat is just to be helpful and pleasant. Like I am. ...sometimes.

I was a mod back in't day, but I jacked in because there was very little backup when difficult decisions had to be made, and some mods (not all, by any means) were generally MIA. So, I think adding more is a good thing - spread the load and all that.
I picked up a used silverface Walkabout in excellent condition on here very recently, and can testify to the positive comments above- it's a fantastic sounding head, and puts out a lot of volume through the right cab, even with an 8ohm load. I own a pair of early-build Barefaced Compacts, and it can keep up with my band pretty easily using just one of them! It wipes the floor with the Shuttle 6.0 I used to own a while back for volume and weight of tone... The fan on mine is very quiet, even when I'm playing at very low volume in my living room. I paid £550 for mine including shipping, and consider that to be an absolute bargain...
The fan thing is weird. I've read a number of comments over on TB from people who are bothered by the fan, and quite a few people have swapped them for quieter PC fans. I've had two Walkabouts, and the fans on both have been barely audible - and I play a lot of 'pin drop' venues, so if they were loud, I'd notice. I wonder if Etienne & I have just been lucky..? Also, I did a couple of gigs over the weekend - one with an acoustic-ish trio where the bass is the main rhythm instrument, and another rock'n'roll gig with a decent PA. For both gigs I was using a single Berg 2x10. With the para EQ rolled all the way down to 30Hz, and backed off the maximum (-15db) With those rumbly lows shelved out, neither the amp nor the cab had to work particularly hard. It was a joy.. such a tight, punchy, fat sound. Walkabout. A beautiful head.

Discussion after rehearsal last night
wateroftyne replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
Just to clarify, I get on with my drummer very well After our rehearsal last night, we had a chat about how the band is going etc. We both agree that the new guitarist is very talented but we are not progressing as well as at the start. He made comments about my playing, like it has become more root based 'in the pocket' stuff. We used to be a lot more 'free form' - both knowing what the other will do and playing to it. It made me realise that I have lost my way a little. Although we are a covers band, I usually made my own bass lines (unless they are central to the tune). I seem to have lost that confidence and it is rather confusing. When practicing on my own, I let the music dictate. Now, when I rehearse with the band, I end up sticking with root / 5th and grooving to the beat. Any ideas or advice on how to break free from this durge? Cheers Brian
It seems to me like you have found your way, not lost it. -
Big walkabout lover here. How loud is your band? I'm back to the WA after spells with the TC RH450 and the Streamliner 900, and don't feel I'm lacking volume or headroom in comparison, even when I'm using a single 8ohm 2x10. That said, none of my bands are ear-earsplittingly loud. We're sensible. No reliabiluty issues - the earlier red-faced models apparently had problems with the effects jack, but it's an easy fix. Generally, they're Mesa, so the build quality is excellent. After finding the class-D heads anaemic, it's a relief to come back to the WA which is a great balance of weight and tone.

Gumtree 1973 Tele Bass-bargain?
wateroftyne replied to yorks5stringer's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
It's hard to put a price on it 'cos there's not many about, but the humbucker 'teles aren't particularly sought after. £1500 is... towards the top-end, I would say.
