New amp day... back in the bosom of MESA!
wateroftyne replied to wateroftyne's topic in Amps and Cabs
Here's a tune from my gig last night - it's the Walkabout DI through the PA. I love the DI on this thing... -
Friends, it's my sad duty to inform you that.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZyaOlrb7E This dummer is at TEH RONG GIG!

Stunning 2-tone stack knob.......
wateroftyne replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Whilst I appreciate the 'nostalgia' thing, surely a guitar/bass made 50+ years ago, can't be better than modern guitars/basses that are hand-crafted by the top luthiers of today for a fraction of the price. So why do people want to spend so much money on a bass that will probably have dodgy electrics, worn frets, cracked/chipped and 'dodgy' paintwork, neck/truss rod problems, corroded hardware...etc...etc...? Of course, I am only winding you up, but surely if a these old classics are that great, why can they not be reproduced to the exact specs, and therefore sound and play just as good? I know Fender produce models based on so-called 62's, 63's and so on, but are they as good, and if so, do they not satisfy the craving for that classic sound and vibe, or is it just the 'original' thing that is all important? I really am intrigued (but don't understand) by this obsession with vintage instruments. I am ready to be slaughtered on this!
Nothing to be slaughtered about - if you buy a reissue, no matter how great it is it won't be one of the very instruments that started it all... that's all. The people who buy instruments like this aren't scratting about for change down the back of the settee. -

That 'burst is truly wretched. -
Do you consider yourself an "expert" bass player?
wateroftyne replied to Jam's topic in General Discussion
Depends on the context. When I'm playing in a great venue with musicians I really admire and respect to a horde of punters who've paid for the privilege, I sometimes think 'Yeah.. I must be doing this right'. ...then someone posts a clip on here of their latest solo bass composition, and suddenly I feel hopeless. -
Boschma Cases, Best Customer Service experience I have ever had
wateroftyne replied to a topic in Accessories and Misc
Boschma are tremendous. Best-kept secret in rack cases... -
Interestingly enough I had a prog evening last night, watching the 'Beyond the Lighted Stage' doc. Geddy Lee appears to be playing a Nash early on in a dressing room scene. The top of the headstock has the nash sharpie date on it and no decal.
Is it not a Fender CS logo on the back of the headstock?
Not particularly useful if it cuts out during a gig IMHO.
The volume I was playing at when it cut out was far in excess of what a box that size could reasonably handle.
I've just returned my HB combo to Thomann & am now waiting for a refund - less the cost of returning it. At first it seemed to be the answer to my prayers - small, light, loud - plus the fact that an extension speaker could be added for gigging & the head could be removed to use as a stand alone head to drive two bigger cabs seemed like eutopia - where ever that is? However, I noticed that when the mains lead was attached - the socket assemply didn't seem too sturdy, which is the main reason for returning it as I thought that if using it to gig with - regular plugging & unplugging would only make the unsteadiness of it worse! To be honest - for the money it is outstanding & the EQ section is quite good - however I did have to have 'everything' switched on & apply the dreaded 'smiley' to the graphic to get a sound I really liked, as the flat sound was very, very 'middley' - probably in the main due to the limited space to move air?? If you are thinking of buying one - then please don't let this put you off, as at this price point - I'm sure nothing comes close to giving you as much bang for your bucks + if it's not to your liking - it only costs arond £15 to return it to Thomman!! ps - I had none of the cutting out problems with mine by the way, but then again, it's so loud I didn't need the volume up very high for it to be heard easily.
A couple of thoughts on the above from a Promethean POV. I thought the same about the mains lead. The plug does go in, and it works, albeit wobbly... and if it's knocked, it goes off. But then I realised it's just a good, old-fashioned tight fit. You need to give the plug a good old push, which clicks it in another 5mm or so. if you do that, it locks rock-solid. The boxiness - if I'm plunking around on the house, a little dip on the 800Hz slider smooths it out. But, if I'm playing with other people, I flatten it again because there's quite a bit of clarity there when there's a lot going on. Again, this is my own experience with the Promethean. I don't know whether any of this is relevant to your situation.
Regardless dude, I've never had a bit of gear crap out on me ever and I've been through phases through the years of really overloading things. If a piece of kit has it's limits, then those should be factored into the gain stage, clipping protection, or whatever it takes to make sure it doesn't let you down... Eude
The reason I ask is that the Promethean - quite reasonably - has a protection circuit which temporarily shuts the power down if it's being pushed too hard. I've triggered it a couple of times, but only while mucking around in the house to see how hard I could drive it - it was at volumes which aren't of any practical use.
However, after about 90 minutes, the head started intermittently cutting out & switching on. Glad I tested this before gig at weekend! Guess it's going back to Thomann now.
Were you driving it very hard at this point?
-
Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I just can't see anything about this that I don't like.
This is the inside of the Harley Benton. Its identical to the RedSub and 99% of the Promethean the head comes from the same production line as The Ibanez and the speaker is the same. The Promethean is a nicer finished package with an easier to remove head but its very hard to justify the extra £270 at £229 witha 3 yr warranty I dont think you can go too far wrong with the HB (although ive not heard it through bigger cabs yet but others give it good reviews) Thomman have been excellent with me, real quick delivery and no quibble returns
In that case - Harley Benton: Bargain of the decade, surely?
I see they're not coming to Newcastle. At least that gets me out of the dilemma of having to decide whether or not to go. I've seen them twice now at £50 a ticket on the past two tours and whilst they were great, I am not sure it's worth me paying that to hear Limelight again, As much as I love them, I'd probably give it a miss this time around.
+1. No Newcastle gig makes it even more unlikely for me this time around. To be honest, I'd happily trade a few less lasers, a few less pyros and a few less vending machines for CDs that have better songs and better mastering.

I know I said this last time, but I might have finally been priced out of the market this time around...

Dunno about the Powerhouse, but my Berg 2x10 (which is also quite sensitive) copes with small gigs no problem. Mesa cabs aren't known for being sonically lightweight...

1974 Fender Jazz on Ebay - not quite as it should be!
wateroftyne replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Bass Guitars
There's nowt wrong with it - it's just a transition-period J. -
Can someone summarise this thread for me, please? I got to the first page, had the OP down as lazy, but by the looks of it things have got interesting. I haven't got time to read the whole thing, though. :-(

Bass rigs-the bigger the better in my experience.
No, it was moving my ass about the stage. The PA subs were about 10 metres in front of me.
'Ass'.. *shudder* Anyway, I usually find that it's the really big lows that make the difference for me at big gigs. They just make everything feel a bit more... effortless. -

Did the festival you played at have a big PA? if so, chances are most of the fun was coming from the subs. -
Cheers! That lovely jazz is still nailed to the wall. What a shame...

Hi all I played at Montgomery Hall in Wath last weekend as part of the annual festival. It was a fab day. Here's a tune... the bass isn't particularly prominent, but it doesn't really need to be on this tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRqi4ItvMDM

Noooooooo! :-( RIP Duck. Oh, man...
