1.
Look at the rear of the speaker - there will be two copper wires running from the speaker connector block to the cone - make sure that they go into the cone at such an angle that the length of the wire isn't flopping against the cone.
Quick way to test this - turn the cab on each of its sides, and try it to see if the noise goes away. If it does, as icastle says it's probably a wire resting on a speaker cone. Not a biggie, but time to take it apart.
2. It hasn't really been reported. I found out from a friend with connections..
3. Not one many BC'ers will be familiar with, but a great (if unorthodox) player, and co-writer of some incredible tunes.. including this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJeGUB8s1xM
4.
Is it just me that can't stand the vocal harmony and obvious unison vocal double tracking?
Nope - I'm royally sick of it, too. It's tiring to listen to.
5. ...or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SswXJX6X-ow
6. Another master of thoughtful political protest was Alan Hull, now sadly passed. Here's one of his, following the Shipbuilding theme. This one was banned by the BBC... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkD5pKU7WsE He was bloody good at rants, too.
7.
Bob Dylan didn't pass anyone by. He had some great songs but what did he achieve?
'Hurricane'.
8.
WoT, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Steamliner vs Walkabout!
Hmm.. there's a (possibly controversial) answer to this... My basses and cabs have been pretty static over the years. The transient factor for me has always been amps. I've been through quite a lot. For years I used Acoustic Image, TC and Streamliner. They were fine amps. BUT.. whenever I did a gig with backline provided, they were invariably amps with a big lump of iron in them, and they had *something*- authority, richness, response, whatever - that the lightweights I've used didn't have. I'd come away from the gig wondering what I was missing. The Streamliner was the best of the bunch by far (the TC is the polar opposite to what I want from an amp. I hated it.) but I still wasn't happy, I always missed the Walkabout, so I went for another. The first night I used it, SHAZAM! It immediately filled the hole. It's so alive, clear and... responsive. I'm now wondering if there's something about the ICEPower module they all use that just doesn't sit right with me. Who knows?
9.
My only issue with Mesa is their price structuring in the UK is insane. I suppose if you get an amp with amazing tone and build, you get what you pay for!
Absolutely. One of the maddest things I ever did was buy a brand-new MPulse. My God.. what was I thinking? Never again - I just can't afford to take that kind of hit. As for the Walkabout... believe everything you hear. They're that good. I'm even willing to put up with a lack of a mute and speakons, and the insane post-everything DI.
10.
How does it compare to your old m pulse 600? Is there enough volume with the little walkabout? .....BTW killer rig WOT! :-)
Thank you! The Bergs are very sensitive cabs, so I don't feel like I'm running out of steam. Not yet, anyway! The MPulse was a great head, but it just doesn't have the Walkabout's magic mids....
11.
Are you going to make a head case for it or put it in a rack?
Nah - it's going to stay al fresco. I have a nice back to keep it in, and I'll look after it...
12. I could cry. In fact, I think I will. Just a little bit.
13. The 'Orkney' thing is a well-known technique designed to discourage viewing before purchase. It's a scam.
14. Oooh... listened to it a few times now, and I've just clicked that there's a fairly intensive instrumental break featuring just bass, drums and guitar. No walls of overdubs, just... the trio. Mint.. it doesn't happen very often these days.
15. I'd spend 2K tooling around America looking for an awesome £3K (inc. tax!) vintage Fender.
16. Full stream here....
17. I wonder why the service is so random?
18. Not long for this world, by all accounts. One of my heroes. http://www.arktimes.com/RockCandy/archives/2012/04/17/levon-helm-in-the-final-stages-of-his-battle-with-cancer
19.
About time you came home dude. Nice one Chris
'Home' is the right word, Chris. I've just listened to a recording from a gig this weekend, and the tone is absolutely on-the-button - everything I've been looking for over the years. These amps do mids like no other.
20. I took a new photo this weekend - can't resist it:
21. Yeah - the headcase looks cool, but as it's Mesa they're about £3m each
22.
If I were paying £150 I would expect them to drink all night, have crappy gear that doesn't work properly, and get most of the songs a bit wrong.
A reasonable expectation - quite a few of the bands around here would surprise you, though.
23.
Lol. I play in a hobby band. I wasn't talking about the musicianship. That's not what is being discussed, it's the proffesionalism I'm talking about.
Can you give us an example?
24.
You can tell hobby bands a mile off and they deserve to be paid £200 a gig.
Cobblers. Some of the hobby bands round our way would knock your socks off.
25. I had one of these.. it was gorgeous, and weight just short of nothing. I wish I'd hung on to it.
