1.
What's the big deal about this bass - just the rarity? I would have thought that if it was actually any good there would have been a re-issue (probably from Japan).
It's been said they had a more aggressive tone than other Ps. I have no idea if that's true, and if so why. As for a reissue... there's been a custom shop RI. Apart from that, I suppose it's just too obscure to be worth it. Besides, who would want a slab P? It would be uncomfortable...!
2. Yeah - situations like that where you have lots of sonic space is lovely. I think lots of engineers do have a fixed idea of 'bass' and fail to adapt if it's not a J with rounds. It is strange, because these are guys who are otherwise spot-on. Of course, Joe Public couldn't care less....
3. They're not
Have you thought that they are getting your sound?
No, because my tone isn't an undefined thump... :-)
4. It's an opinion formed over the last 5, 10 years or so of gigs and recordings. IME, some engineers 'get it'. Most don't...
5.
What rubbish studios and engineers are you using these days? Do they ever stick their heads into the live room to hear the sound coming out of the amps? Name and shame I say.
Really, really, really good ones, albeit ones who have a blind spot of flatwound strings on a bass. It's so strange.
6.
Bunch of random bods auditioning to be in the latest group put together by a puppet master - not authentic.
It just goes to show... I think this is pop music at its most authentic.
7. ...do most engineers these days, in the studio or on a live environment, struggle with bass when it's strung with flats? They seem to think 'Oh.. flats. I must EQ it into an undefined thump.', or they EQ it like rounds, and it sound crap. Rant over.
8. Do you mean authentic or credible? I'm not sure how pop music could ever be authentic..?
9. AFAIK, Dunlop wind their own in a factory in Califormia.
10. Mrs. WoT has had quite a bit of luck at car boot sales - nice nearly-new Hohners, etc. Take a chromatic guitar tuner so you can check it's in pitch (and relative pitch). Hold one half of it and let the other half drop to the floor, to check the bellows are air-tight. The slower the other half drops, the better. If there's a leak, it'll fall more quickly. As mentioned above, don't buy anything exotic that looks like it should be nailed to a pub wall.
11. I've played Knockin' On Heaven's Door and Psycho Killer at the wake of a biker who died in a crash once. It felt utterly weird, but the next-of-kin wanted us to, so... we did.
12.
That's a gorgeous thing - shame you are being forced to sell by circumstances but I guess the Roscoe Beck has become your favourite gigging bass
That's basically it. The RB is great... It does the lot, but something has to go to pay for it. It's either the fretless or this, as my fretted P is part of my DNA.
13. Here she blows... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Js_qwx0uvk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFyAkPN01zU
14. It's that time again. I'm trying everything I can to avoid selling this, but my beloved fretless P isn't selling, so it's time has come. All original, apart from replacement Lindy Fralin split-coil pickups (the originals were weak - I'll include them). Medium weight. No case, so I'd prefer collection / meet / deliver locally at the moment. I'm in the Newcastle area. Any questions, ask away.
15.
Did they use those machine heads as early as '82? I thought they were later.
Yeah.. They came about for the Elites.
16. It's probably just an early 80s 'parts bin' bass. That era threw up some odd combinations.
17. I can't listen to the clip - is it Hawaii 5-0? The bass player was Ian Thomson, I think. Lovely chap, great player.
18. It's a shame hearing about all these hissy ones... At this moment I'm in the a conservatory having an acoustic rehearsal and, although there is a hiss, it's barely noticeable. If I turn the output up to a level where hiss is audible, the actual output of the amp at that level is deafening. You would expect hiss at that volume.
19. I have no experience of the TV12, but the Promethean is quite awesome...
20.
Agreed. But sadly lacking a pot of blend for the pick-ups.
I personally haven't missed one so far - the selector and the pull-pot do a great job.
