1.
Are you sitting comfortably?....... Long, long ago...... I was contacted by exiled Geordie Alan Rogan (Guitar tech for The Who among others) who told me Pino Palladino was seeking a Precision bass in order to change direction after becoming aware that his fretless sound was being cloned in quite a few recordings at the time. Being based dahn sarf it was felt he would be paying a premium for a decent bass in the likes of Denmark Street and that better bargains could be had up North. That was true then (pre-internet and all) so I was asked to track down a pre-CBS bass as I had my finger on the pulse as far as North-east basses were concerned and had already done deals with Alan involving early Fenders so he knew I would be able to find the right piece. Sure enough, I found THAT one - a fiesta red re-fin, all hardware original and priced it at £450.00 IIRC. After speaking to Pino directly, it was parcelled up and sent to him after I re-strung it with La Bella flats. This was in the belief that he would be going for the 'old school' sound and those strings were best suited to a 60s Precision. It turned out that Pino changed to rounds pretty quickly but then reported a few days later that he thought I was right after all and put the flats back on. The rest, as they say....... Quite proud of the connection, but it's ironic that, being retired now, I couldn't even afford one of the tribute models based on the one we dealt.
This is incredibly cool. Was it a 'local' bass?
2.
In interwiews, I don't suppose he would disclose who supplied his fiesta red Precision all those years ago
What's the story there, then?
3. My own thoughts are that one of the great things about the 10" is the compact size. The 15" might be great, but if you're after a compact combo, then... It's a shame it didn't work out with the Prom. When you get a good'un, they're awesome.
4.
Shame about all the venues that have closed because of the smoking ban.
Yep, but future generations will be amazed that we used to let people smoke in pubs. They'll think we were mindless simpletons. We should be proud of that.
5.
That is news to me. I can't say I've ever been able to smell a bass in my entire life. Perhaps I haven't been trying hard enough. My sense of smell's shot anyways due to the erm... smoking. I thought it was ageing and sunlight that caused some finishes to yellow. If an instrument has developed a covering of smokey residue then surely it just needs, or did need, a bit of a rub with a cloth. Next time I see some dude with an old guitar in the pub I might go up and ask them for a sniff.
Well, consider yourself edumacated.
6.
As I peruse the for sale boards for instruments I can't afford, I regularly see them advertised from "smoke free homes". I was just wondering, am I missing something about ciggarette smoke causing damage? I know lots of people find smoking a dirty habit, and if you were buying a sofa or clothes second hand then "smoke free" would be an advantage, or maybe a mixing desk thats been used as an occasional ashtray or skinning up board would be something to avoid, but do basses aquire a smokey smell? Does nicotine clog up the pots or deaden the string prematurely? Perhaps it leeches behind the finish and causes crazing? If my basses look a bit grubby I'll give 'em a wipe with a clean cloth and without a second thought. Should tobacco packets come with a warning of the damage caused to musical instruments? Just wondering.
It makes them stink and go yellow. That might be a dealbreaker to some people.
7. Guy Pratt, eh? Talented, funny, successful... Yeah, what a loser.
8. Hi again Gaz from Seco got back to me a week or so ago, and I forgot to post it. Sorry!
Can you please tell them that they are all at sale prices to clear as I am stoppng bass parts so grab a bargain and if they want to see what they look like finished then check out facebook.com/secoguitars
I've had a look and there's a photo on there of a couple of P's on there with this comment:
This is the two I built with the necks/tuners/neck plates I had from you recently Gaz. I can highly recomend these necks, for the price they are a bloody bargain, nice traditional chunky "C" profile, good quality Gloss finishes. Pity you're backing off from the bass stuff due to lack of interest.
Again, just passing this on because I know the lad and I can vouch for him - I have no vested interest in it.
9.
Having said that if the speaker in the 15" combo can actually take the power of the in-built amp without 'clicking', than that's something.
To be fair, that's not the norm. You were just unlucky.
10. Love that... dynamic, and loads of space. Well done.
11. It's currently at Howard the Bass Doc's, getting a spruce up before I put it back up with more current pictures. Here's a peek from six years ago. Not that it's changed much since then...
12.
The rules say " Children and spouses must not be offered for sale on the forum, even if to help fund Fender Roscoe Beck or other bass guitars"
...which is a shame, as I'd find it easier to deal with...!
13. I have to. It'll be back up soon... :-(
14. Whoops..
15. I didn't know they'd be that much cheaper direct from the US...
16. Oooh.. cool. Thanks. Now.. Medium or light...?
17. It came with a new set of Hi-Beams on it. I've done a couple of gigs with it, but rounds always sound (to me!) like there's a hole in the mids. That's why I moved to flats originally... every year or so I'll go through a rounds spell to remind myself why I'm a flats person.
18. Yeah! It's lovely with the La Bellas on, but I need a new set so I thought I'd experiment...
19. Yeah.. I shall hang on to my combo for dear life. It's irreplaceable.
20. Cheers! I thought I'd checked them... dunno how I missed it!
21. Here you go. On the surface of it... disappointing. Here's a link to the full image.
22. Hi folks I fancy trying a set of the above... does anyone in the UK stock them?
23.
Seriously, I'd much rather be in a band with people I got on with than people who were the brilliantest at what they do.
It is possible to get on with people who are very good at what they do. As for being in a band with a drummer who has a flaky concept of timekeeping because they're a friend... it's akin to persevering with a car with square wheels just because you're fond of it. If you're not bothered about getting anywhere, and are happy for people to point and laugh... knock yourself out.
24. I'm not sure I'd spend time teaching a drummer how to keep time. it's something they should just 'know'. If they can't feel it, then... meh.
25. I took it to Warwickhunt's last night for a bit of a plunk - it sounded great through his Thunderfunk and Aggie DB. It's now - finally - got an old set of flats on it, and they're staying.
