I lack the additional £1500 needed to make this happen....

I'm still sitting on my hands...
So what you are saying is you want him to buy it and post it to you?
Heh. It's worth adding that if any BC'er does want this, I'll be happy to keep it safe until they're able to collect it. (That's a genuine offer.. not a joke!)
-
The only think I can offer is that Wot is a trad Fender guy ( probably) ...so how will this sit on gigs..?
Got it in one, matey....
Price isn't the issue though is it? it is already a great price. It's a question of can I afford this? Y/N Could I get a better bass for less or similar money? Y/N If I bought and wanted to sell later could I make the money back? Y/N Do I want this bass? do the positives out way the negatives? Y/N Would I play this less than a sunburst fender PJ? Y/N Would I mind it being different than the rest of my collection? Y/N Any no's mean possibly not the bass for you! (I was tempted but would have to sell a bass to afford it so didn't get past the first question )
All good questions! No straight answers, unfortunately... It's a question of can I afford this? Y.. kind-of. If it's stays I'll be selling my Fretless '71 P.. Could I get a better bass for less or similar money? Possibly... or possibly not! If I bought and wanted to sell later could I make the money back? I dunno.. I'm new to the non-Fender market. Do I want this bass? do the positives out way the negatives? It's soooooooo bling! Would I play this less than a sunburst fender PJ? Just spoken to the chap again. He won't budge on the price, which is fair enough. Hmm. Now what...? Gaaaaah!

Jesus.. the one at Moon is £1600....!

Ha ha.. I noticed that. I'm still wrestling with myself over this one. It feels like a bargain, but it's not quite what I want. What to do, what to do...

Electric vs. acoustic bass for acoustic trio?
wateroftyne replied to lewyyy's topic in General Discussion
I could always play an electric and see how it goes...
Do that. After one gig they'll never give it another thought. As a concession, consider sticking flats on it. -
Being pedantic I would have thought that the whole point of going acoustic is to use acoustic gear.
But only since the 1990s... -

Stick to electrics. I never got this 'acoustic bands need an acoustic bass' thing. It's all a bit 90s MTV unplugged. Plus, acoustic basses generally aren't very good. IMO, of course. -
Hmm.. not sure...
Do it. Someone needs to buy this to take the temptation away from me
If it had been 3-tone burst, I'd be sitting playing it now..! I'm such a luddite.

I've just been back to see it, this time armed with a better idea of how the Audere works. I found the out-and-out P tone. and it's bloody lovely. Gah.. this bass is sweet! I just can't pull myself out of my Fender comfort zone...
isn't it the hi/lo z thingy.... like i know what that means off the top of my head
Something like that.. here's the lowdown. Specifically, it was this config: http://www.audereaudio.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=5
how heavy was it? (compared to other things?)
Umm... at a guess? 9-9.5lbs maybe. A pound heavier than I'd like. All the weight is in the body - it balances very well indeed. It's got them lightweight Hipshots on it. I spent half-and-hour thinking the little tree-way flick switch was a pickup selector. it wasn't (it's a phase switch or summat), and that explains why I struggled to find an out-and-out P tone. My fault.

(Mods - if this is in the wrong place could you move it, please? Thank you!) Hi all This is a public service announcement. I'm on the hunt for a PJ, and I spotted this on Gumtree for £930. It's up Gosforth way, for anyone who knows the area. I've just been to see it and my God, it's lovely... It's totally beautiful in a slightly bling way. The neck is very flamey (you can't tell in the photos). It's in excellent condition and it's one of the nicest playing basses I've ever played (IYKWIM). The notes are clean, even and lively right the way to the top. I didn't buy it because the preamp (which I thought was a J-retro, but I've just looked it up and it's an Audere) sounds too 'active' for my tastes, and it it's a little bit heavier than my ideal weight (but not 'heavy' by any means). It balances very well. I have no affiliation with the seller whatsoever, but I thought I'd do a public service and post my findings here in case anyone is interested.
second hand japanese fender 62ri, a jazz pickup and your local luthier?
Yip... something along these lines is a possibility.
This GAS attack wouldn't have been triggered by a certain Hot-Rodded Precision that appeared in the 'basses for sale' forum recently would it?
Maaaaaaybe...! -
I can't bear any of that slappy nonsense, but it was nice to hear him play fingerstyle on that RAH thing on Sky Arts. I've not heard him play like that very often. Great stuff.
Not a whole lot to tell, really - I just think it's garbage. I've had plenty of active basses in my time and never once had to resort to the instructions to know 'which control does what' because my ears can't discern it. Not just me, either.. I took it along to the studio when our band was recording an EP and between myself and the producer we dubbed the EQ controls "bass, nothing, not much, and interference". Still, makes no difference to me because the plan was always to get a new, less busy pick-guard made for it (so it looks like a Precision again), pull out the preamp and wire it up fully passive.
Ta for that. FWIW, the pre on the one I played definitely did stuff. Even set flat, switching it in really opened it up, and it seemed silent. Mind you, a shop isn't the best environment to check this stuff in detail. That said, I'd run it passive most of the time, I think... -

Ah - I've found the thread on it. I guess it is a switch in knob form, then. Interesting..! -
Strange that you should've found that - I've always found with mine (and indeed it was commented on a BC thread not long ago) that although it feels like a standard non-detented pot, there were 3 definite positions to it and no real 'blend' between them. Maybe it depends who wired it, when, and which bucket of components they were picking from! But yeah, despite being openly critical of the preamp in mine (another story), I still love it for the build quality and passive tone. I say go for it!
Oh - that's interesting. I must admit I only really checked the Solo'd P, middle & backed off the to bridge tones. i didn't pay much attention to what was going on between those points... Tell me about the preamp. I'm intrigued! -
Hi, Just a thought but would you not consider one of these? It seems to tick a lot of the boxes that you require and having owned one I can say they play and sound amazingly.Lovely basses.
