Yes, I tried through my old Musicman Audiophile HD212 (8 ohm, 600W, 2 x12" + 6"), and it sounded pretty sh*tty and distorted (This cab normally sound beautiful with my DBS 7400). To be honest. it was probably that test that made my mind up that it had to go back.
Oh heck yes, it's broken... It does sound like the problem I had where something had gone awry on the business end of the jack input...
My guess with the new wattage is that the 250W or whatever the amp currently is at 8ohms is too much for the size of the box and spec of speaker. You get what you pay for, and the fact the combo is £500 ish can't really mean a high end 10" speaker. If it does, well done to them!
I don't know who manufactures the driver, but it's the real deal. The headroom comes from the box size, not the speaker.

Bass Solo. Should You and How to ?
I think less is more with solos (especially bass solos)
Yeah... me too. Like, really less. -
So does this men that the existing head is actually only 300 Watts, and in the 5110 combo it's only putting out 150 Watts? If so that would go some way to explaining why I was a bit disappointed with the volume I got from mine, although my main complaint was the horrible clicking noise it made when the volume was turned beyond 1/3, and the fact that it wasn't that loud at that point. Alternatively I guess that may have realised that the speaker in the combo can't take 250 watts without making the above mentioned clicking, or of course it could be that they are using a different power module so that they can drop the price. For anyone who was following my other thread on this, mine has now gone back to 'Rockem Music' to go back to the distributor for assessment /fixing. I should hear something in the New Year. I've told Rockem that if it is faulty and it comes back fixed then I'll be happy, but if it's not faulty and this is just how it is then I'll be wanting my money back (and I'll pay the return courier).
My previous comment was just guesswork.. the Promethean is definitely as loud as other heads I've used. I've had no headroom issues. As for the combo... I have a feeling yours has an issue. Mine doesn't do what yours does... it gets very. very loud without throwing the towel in. But, as I mentioned on your other thread, having the gain and volume on mine set to how yours was is results in a VERY loud output, exceeding what I would expect from a small 1x10. Anything louder than that, and I'd be looking at an extension cab. Were you able to try your head with another cab?
We were asked last year (in our area Michael) to agree to not play 3 mths either side of any date given in a certain venue... that meant 6 mths not playing in that town (which probably contains at least 4 venues that I play regularly).
That's a ridiculous request...!
-
my gut reaction is that any venue owner trying to enforce such an 'agreement' would have trouble doing so and, unless they are offering a really good deal, are not a business I would want to deal with.
Ticketed venues aside, the pubs up here that have asked us to stay outside the area for a couple of weeks either side are friendly local venues, who we know well. If they ask us nicely, we're happy to go along with it. We're all friends...
-
I think in pub-covers-land, think a window of couple of weeks either-side of the date is reasonable. Anything more than that is stretching it a bit.
-
On the theatre / art centre / ticket venue circuit it's common. On the pub scene, less so... there's a couple of 'music' pubs up here that politely ask you not to play at the pub over the road for a while either side of playing there. Depending on the circumstances, I think it's a reasonable request.

It's probably worth a wee bit more than it was a while ago, with the Neo shortage and all..
I happened to see the Take That live gig last night on TV. Probably the best show I've ever seen.
I agree. Ridiculously good.
Done. I called it 'General Discussion' and put more info in the subtitle.
*doffs cap*
-
I always imagined 'General Bass Discussion' to be about music chat more generally, as it would probably have a bass heavy slant being on a bass forum...
That makes sense. Any chance we could have the title changed to 'General bass & music discussion'?
Well, it's slightly louder than my Marshall B65 combo (65 watts) at the point where it becomes unusable due to the 'clicking'. I know that perceived volume as a function of watts depends on many factors, but all the same I would have expected significantly more volume from 250 watts (its stand alone/8 ohm rating) than from 65 Watts, and at over £500 I would expect it to deliver. From memory I suspect that a Roland Cube100/120 would be significantly louder. I really hope that it is faulty and that it comes back delivering the promise as I fundamentally like the unit, and it is compact. If this one isn't faulty and this is just how they are then this isn't the right combo for me and (IMHO) its not worth £515. I'll let you all know what transpires, though I guess that will now be in the New Year. Thanks for your interest folks. The Count.
With the gains set to the above, mine is very loud, punchy and solid (within the limits of a box that size). Way more than I'd expect from another 65w combo. Something to try... when you're plugged in at the amp, give the plug a firm wiggle, enough to give what's going on on the other side a nudge. I had a problem with mine after I accidentally gave the jack a knock.. basically, it did something resulting in the output dropping, and the signal went lifeless, clicky and buzzy. Jiggling it around lined it all up again inside, fixing the problem. I took it to a tech who tightened it all up inside to stop it happening again.
No argument there. I've not found anyone who says that it isn't. But when one goes into a pub and pays for a pint one expects to get a pint, not ten ounces, no matter how good it tastes.
I actually didn't like it... it's 'loud', but at the expense of what I look for in a bass head.

Nice! Is that a flamey neck, or is it a trick of the light?
-
I get by by working my lunch and leaving early, or taking half days. it's rare that I can't get away when I need to, but if it happens I'll just miss the soundcheck. Also, they gave me six weeks' unpaid leave a few years ago to go on tour. I was grateful for that.
-
Cool... that's good to know. All I would add is.. if I set the input gain to the clipping threshold, and the master to 10 o'clock, it would be LOUD...! Is yours loud, too?
-
...can you force the input clip light on by cranking the input gain?
-
Hmm... mine doesn't do it...
