GENES-ISH (UK Genesis tribute) This Sat 26th November @ The Office South Shields
wateroftyne replied to BIG.J's topic in Gigs
I wasn't able to get along for this, but I'll C&P this from a local music forum... ------------- Genes-ish @ The Office, Sat 26th Nov 2011 As we all know, the North East is a hotbed of talent, and when it comes to tribute bands we are especially well catered for - some of the country's finest residing right at our doorstep. Consequently our expectations of tribute bands are set very highly indeed and the vast majority of imported talent falls well short of the supreme standards we have come to expect. NOT THIS BAND..... Having saw their gig at the 3 Tuns about a year or so ago, I was expecting a quality show, but the lineup changes since that gig have taken what was already a superb tribute and lifted it right up to the very top of the tree. Arriving an infuriating 15 minutes late, I found the band just about to open "The Cage", for me easily the highlight of what I saw of their first set. Set 2 opened with crowd pleaser "Mama", singer John Kirby superbly lit (as was the entire show) in green strobes as he pulled a suitable Collins-esque gurn during the sinister laughter that has become that song's signature moment, and through out the show John displayed knowing touches of dramatic stage presence, not least during "The Musical Box" - the interaction with an over enthusiastic fan merely adding to the spectacle. Closing opus "Firth of Fith" resulted in roars of approval before John joined drummer Alex for a spectacular duet that worked like magic. The fact that John also drums means Genes-ish are able to deliver the full Collins style show to superb effect. Dramatic stage presence, excellent musicianship and spellbinding vocal delivery - what more could you ask of a front man? A spectacular "Los Endos", an enormous huge crowd singalong to "I Know What I Like" and a suitably uptempo "Turn It On Again" closed out one of the best shows I have seen in a very long time and easily one of my top gigs this year. With excellent performances from Neil Gordon (keys), Pete Smith (guitars) , Justin Ryan (bass) and Alex Lindley (drums), Genes-ish are easily up there with the top tributes you will ever see. I could have wrote this review in one word - AWESOME ! Moo! PMSbull -
So.. what was Geddy Lee's last great bassline...?
DAMN if I didn't think Geddy's perpetual one finger flamenco dan-an-ana-nana-nana-nana-angering over the OLD tunes, let alone the new, P*ssed me off big time.
Yeah... me too. When it hit home for me was the instrumental break in Between the Wheels on the R30 tour.
In short, I know where OP is coming from, but I still think he produces good stuff, albeit in smaller quantity. But he and the three of them as a whole have earned the right to sit back more than any other rock band IMO, period.
The thing is, they can only get away with it 'cos there's thousands of people like me who will continue to throw money at them regardless of what they put out. They're almost unique in that regard. (Oh, and Alex... stop pretending to sing. It looks silly.) -
New album due next year, and according to Ged in a recent interview, the producer is trying to encourage an older-style Rush record...epics were also mentioned. They put out a taster last year, the Caravan/BU2B single. If that's what's called a working retirement, they sound more alive on those two tracks than bands half their age IMHO!
I quite like Caravan, but it's not 'great'. IMO. Y'know, I'd like to hear them stripped back. Just the three of them doing their thing. -
Where has the blue theme gone?
It was a bit too saucy for the kids, apparently.
Geddy's playing?? I think he continues to contribute colour to the songs the way he always did. As Rush has evolved he has evolved into more of an all round musician than his original 'bass player who sings'. I'm all for that. The song comes first. Always the song.
I actually think the song comes second with them these days...! -
I'd love to hear that re-mixed with bass & drums significantly further forward in the mix.
Yes - that would be nice.
Heres 2 that I think are brilliant but have the flamenco and chordal work all over them but still full of energy and drive.
Ah - I forgot about Driven. OK.. Driven it is. Freeze though... I've just had another listen in case I'm missing anything, but that song to me is everything I don't like about a lot of the stuff of this era. A load of snippets pro-tool'd together, with Geddy awkwardly trying to fit a melody around it. Bleh. -
Cheers, all! It's great fun to do live. It's pretty uncharacteristic of the rest of the album...

I can... I created this thread on it.
Yes, his playing and tone has changed, as have the band. But imagine how boring it would be if they still dressed flowing robes and sounded like they did in 1977?
But imagine how great it would be if the songs from the last three albums had bass parts that didn't sound like phoned-in afterthoughts..! -
I have a theory that a lot of famous bands/artists have too many people around them telling them everything they do is great and they start believing it. A lack of criticism and self regulating crap filter ends up with poor output.
That could well be the problem in this case, IMO.
Or harmony. Their songwriting is very poor these days. I don't like his vocal melodies, the awful mixing and mastering. There's no sweetness to their songs anymore, no energy, no beauty. They seem to have so little to say.
Yep - Geddy's vocal phrasing is slapdash... and they don't write songs any more. They assemble licks in ProTools. -

There's just no melody in the lines anymore. Come on, Geddy... sort it out! -
Acoustic Image amp - any good for electric bass?
wateroftyne replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I ran my Focus for years with Sansamp and EBS pre's. It was fine, it did the job well, but it missed the oomph of latter-day switching amps. It reminded me a bit of the RH450...? -
That is SO cool.

First of all, I love Rush, and like a sheep I'll always buy everything they release. But.. I'm struggling to think of what Geddy's last great bass part was. Y'know the sort... Marathon. Turn the Page. Digital Man. Freewill. By-Tor. Distant Early Warning... before everything got buried under chords and flamencoesque clattering. I think it's Alien Shore off Counterparts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E0RrVXy9Uw Prove me wrong, people! What great lines have I overlooked from Test For Echo, Vapour Trails and Snakes and Arrows?
Damn, that's annoying. I only like mobile view if it gives an advantage (which in many cases it doesn't). I guess I'll just have to either use another browser just for basschat or go into the settings every time I visit.
There's a 'full site' button at the bottom. That seems to drop a cookie which keeps it in full site mode. As it 'appens, I really rate the mobile site anyway. I can't see me shifting to full site too often.

Just a thought - I don't know how relevant it is to most, but.. Since the upgrade I can follow a thread just by reading the torrent of reply notifications I get in my inbox. I don't really have to visit the site, which in turn means there's less chance to get involved in other threads, etc...

I've not really noticed any change as I tend to stay out of off-topic. It's the same old stuff over and over again.

Hi folks Been in the studio recently with one of my bands... here's a tune from it, which is pretty rocky for me. Recorded on my fretless P. I wasn't around for the mix, so I couldn't fight it's corner. it speeds up like a bugger, but we decided to free this one from the tyranny of the click, because of the nature of the tune. I think it works... http://soundcloud.com/wateroftyne/hm And here's a sampler of some other tunes...
For me the feel of Bass Chat has certainly changed in recent times and not for the better. Ironically I guess it's due to it's success and growth.
To be fair, there's a thread along these lines every year or so.
