1. Ry Cooder - El UFO Cayo Jean Michel Jarre - Equinoxe I Highlands - Bob Dylan Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata Loads of others. I love tunes that just roll on and on....
2.
Paul Simon in Central Park ( Graceland era )
Good call.. love this tune from that gig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZegjDaDsu9Y
3. Lovely! I didn't think I'd ever see one older than mine (Feb '71), but I've been beaten by a couple of months! Incidentally, we share a neck-pocket stamp... Incidentally, I put a Raven Labs PBR-1 active pre in mine. It's nice, but I'm not sure I need it. Happy mwaaahing!
4.
Hmm, I'll see if I can find some samples. I have to say, I saw them on the Snakes and Arrows tour and the sound was fantastic, at the same venue on the Time Machine tour the bass was a little mushier and it sounded a little bit boomy. Still a great show though, I really enjoyed it. Realistically though, we'll never see Rush playing small venues with masterfully scultped sound again.
Were you at Newcastle on the TM tour? Where I was, it was so boomy as to be almost unlistenable. I mentioned this to friends who were there who said the spund was spot-on where they were. I must have been in the middlle of a standing wave or something.
5.
I'm a huge fan, but I won't be bothering with this. I simply don't have the time to wade through four or five hours of DVD which is probably very, very similar to the last one and the one before that. I've watched the R30 DVD once, in installments and that came out six or seven years ago!
I kinda see your point, but... two words. Camera. Eye.
Oh bugger - I was looking forward to that too. They were fantastic when I saw 'em in Manchester earlier in the year. Perhaps I'll play it on a CD player in an empty adjacent room and pretend I'm standing outside the stadium, listening in.
Don't bother with the 'adjacent room' bit. It'll sound like that if you listen in the same room.
6. Lindisfarne's 'Magic in the Air'. Rod Clements' unmistakeable fretless Precision tone. Great player, and a huge influence on me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upb_kVfy9PA
7. OK.. the Blu Ray hasn't arrived yet, but I've had a listen to the CD. My God, it's terrible. Rush live CDs have never sounded great, but this is one of the worst. It sounds like a bootleg. Compressed, lifeless, echoey... why do they do this? Are they going deaf? Don't they care? If you're thinking of buying it, don't. Record the DVD / Blu Ray soundtrack on an old cassette player from an adjacent room instead. It'll sound better and save yourself a few quid. Rant over. (By the way, the first person to say something along the lines of 'It's Rush. of course it sounds terrible. They are terrible!' wins the wooden spoon of unoriginality.)
8.
There were a lot of 'Made in China' Bodies, Necks & basses which appeared to be off the same production line as SX & Jim Deacons being sold as New-old-stock Canadian 'Signature' products a while ago by an ebay seller who span a yarn about clearing out a factory or some such nonsense. Some kind of scammery appeared to be going on.
^^^ This - there's a thread on TB about it that you might want to read before committing to anything...
9. If one breaks and has to be repaired, you have a spare.
10. I'm struggling to think why a studio wouldn't have DI boxes. After all, it's their job to record a musician's instrument, not their DI box.
11.
Found out (too late ) that the new tablets I had been given for my Arthritis were Ototoxic, and the accumulated effect has made me virtually deaf. Had to pack in playing, not because of any on-stage problems, but the fact that I got angry at not being able to hold a conversation with anyone whilst at a Gig. The 'social' aspect of it all went out of the window, which was one of the main reasons I liked playing in a Band. On the bright side, my Daughter and Son-in-Law presented us with a brand-new Grandson, and asked us if we would look after him while they were both at Work. Talk about a new lease of life!
Bittersweet, Al - sorry to hear about the ear troubles.
12.
Should have said 'no' a bit earlier!
This advice is about ten months too late...
13. By new year's eve, I'll have done 63 'proper' gigs this year (not including open mics, etc.). Five or six different bands, original material and covers, all sorts of venues up-and-down the country. I could have done more, but I recently became a dad for the second time so I had to say no to a few things. It's been fun, and better than last year which was a bit of a washout. If there's one disappointment, it's that I didn't have many summer festivally things this year, which I enjoy but there's a few pencilled in next year. Yes, it's tiring balancing music, family and a 'proper' job, but I don't really know any other way. I love it.
14. Lovely! Put the case in the loft and forget about it... Don't sell it!
15. They look lovely. 250w might not seem like much, but it's 14w more than the TC RH450. *ducks behind rock*
16.
How did you know I checked my junk?? Have you got CCTV in my house?
I could have sworn I saw you mention that. I'm losing my mind...!
17. I love Sousaphoneses. Here's the closest I'll ever get to playing one.. impersonating one on a Precision: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6cfwI7dVnI
18. I know you've checked your junk, but more and more of my notifications are ending up in junk. Maybe they're being filtered off earlier in the process somewhere?
19. There's a similar thing on Talkbass which works really well, but rather than a popup it displays it in a tool-tip. It's very useful, and the tool-tips are much cleaner and quicker than popups.
20.
Used them "in anger" last night. First impressions are that with the band I was with last night - which has two bassists, me being the "thud" as opposed to the "twang" - they fit in very well. Very easy to play, and although there seems to be a lot of fret-noise when the bass is on it`s own, this doesn`t come through in the mix, and I get a nice thud, which is great as my role in this band is really emphasising the bass-drum patterns. After years of playing Roto Rounds though, these flats feel "wrong" but I`ve got to give them time, and not make any snap decisions. I`m juust going to have to wait until next week to try them in my other band, which is a more traditional punk covers band. I think that will be the deal maker or breaker.
They're going to change beyond recognition over the coming weeks - try not to get too attached to / disappointed with how they sound and feel at the moment.
21.
This is great stuff guys. I primarily prefer rock over indie but am really open to blues, soul, rnb (the proper stuff not the crap on the radio), funk etc. Staying in the Hilton so walking distance of town and access to metro. Any of you Newcastle dwellers got a gig. Would be nice to support a bcer.
Hmm.. I'm at South Shields so that's no good. This lot are on at O'Neillss, opposite the central station. http://www.myspace.com/maggierossblues Never seen them, so I can't vouch for 'em..
22. As has been mentioned - it depends on what you're interested in. I like The Cluny and The Tyne - there's the Jumpin' Hot Club as well, the Central Bar in Gateshead,.. include the suburbs and the coast there's just loads going on. No matter what you're after, there'll be something for you somewhere. Oh, and welcome to The City of Kings.
23. *shameless plug* I'll be playing at least one on Nov 26th, breaking my usual embargo on anything Christmassy outside of December.
24.
I certainly have experienced D Class amps that seemed loud, but also seemed to lack depth or girth in their sound..
I agree. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the Streamliner is the first Micro I've played that doesn't lack in that department.
