I have a bit of an ongoing struggle with engineers who just don't know how to mix 'old school' bass any more. They seem to go straight for big, open lifeless [i]trhhhhrrummm[/i]. It drives me nuts.

Do a factory reset, just in case.

Here's a bit of info which might be useful to anyone who has had an experience with a noisy / underperforming Promethean. I've done a lot of gigs with mine over the best part of a year, and noise-wise it's been - as near as damn it - dead silent. I love it. However... as I was plugging in to the amp at a gig a couple of days ago, I noticed the nut around the input jack had worked a little loose. As a result the socket had a bit of a wobble so I instinctively hand-tightened the nut. Presumably, as I did this, the assembly behind the face plate rotated a little too. Anyway, since then I noticed two things... at the gig, I had to drive the amp a lot harder than I normally did. Secondly, when I used the amp at home afterwards, I noticed it had begun to hiss. Badly. I've just spent some time trying to work out what the problem is, and as part of the troubleshooting I thought I'd hand-turn the nut around the jack anti-clockwise back to where it was. Bingo! The power & punch is back, and the hiss is gone - night-and-day in a quarter-turn. So... all I need to do is pop the top off the amp and tighten the nut properly, keeping the assembly stationary. Could explain the hiss / noise issue a few people have had...? Until I get into the amp, I couldn't begin to explain what's going on behind the scenes, but if I work it out I'll post it here. Hope this helps!

I was never happy with the Sansamps. I ended up with an EBS and it was better in every regard.. IMO.

The last thing I'm interested in when it comes to gear is what it sounds like in the shop. The Streamliner is punchy and clear to me, but it's naturally punchy and clear lower down in the spectrum than most. Proper bass, IMO. It is an expensive gamble, though.

Fretless P, play it fairly often. Acoustic bass... nah. I've owned a couple, but they always seem to be dogs to play, and are totally hopeless unless you plug them in. Whereupon they become almost totally hopeless. They're an early 90s hangover from MTV unplugged, I think.

I used to use a pair of Berg HS210s in all but the smallest gigs. Now, I almost always use a single cab... the tone of the Streamliner is perfectly placed for my needs, and thumps away where it counts quite happily with one cab.

I noticed it straight away... it was a revelation to me.

A Ry Cooder track ripped from a mid-80s CD popped up on my iPod t'other day. I was wearing headphones, and it was a bit quiet so I turned it up. When the drums kicked in on the intro - PUNCH! PUNCH! The Streamliner is pretty well liked by the tube amp crowd - have a read through the megathread on Talkbass if you have a day or so spare. I can see why - it does clean / warm / fuzzy-around-the-edges valve amp incredibly well. I'm not sure it's the answer if you want flat-out tube grind, though. And yes, the Promethean is very warm for a solid-state class D. I preferred it to the TC.

I had a plunk on this when it was naked(!)... it felt lovely. ..and now, it looks lovely, too. Nice one!

I think Neil Young nailed it years ago. His general view was: We used to [i]listen[/i] to music... get involved in it, in the dynamic, warmth and amazing detail analogue provided. Now, we're generally reduced to listening to a flat facsimile of the original performance. It's depressing, but I think I agree with him.

I'd recommend the [url="http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_p5110_promethean.htm"]Ibanez Promethean[/url]. It's compact, it sounds great at low (and high) volume, it has an Aux in and headphone out for playing along with mp3's, and if you need to up the ante for a gig you can either add another cab, or take the head out and use it with a larger cab. I'd agree with what's been said above about the Walkabout Scout. They're not great for plunking around in the house.
