1. I have a bit of an ongoing struggle with engineers who just don't know how to mix 'old school' bass any more. They seem to go straight for big, open lifeless trhhhhrrummm. It drives me nuts.
  2. Do a factory reset, just in case.
  3.
Fender American Deluxe Precision
Lovely. What's it like?
  4. Here's a bit of info which might be useful to anyone who has had an experience with a noisy / underperforming Promethean. I've done a lot of gigs with mine over the best part of a year, and noise-wise it's been - as near as damn it - dead silent. I love it. However... as I was plugging in to the amp at a gig a couple of days ago, I noticed the nut around the input jack had worked a little loose. As a result the socket had a bit of a wobble so I instinctively hand-tightened the nut. Presumably, as I did this, the assembly behind the face plate rotated a little too. Anyway, since then I noticed two things... at the gig, I had to drive the amp a lot harder than I normally did. Secondly, when I used the amp at home afterwards, I noticed it had begun to hiss. Badly. I've just spent some time trying to work out what the problem is, and as part of the troubleshooting I thought I'd hand-turn the nut around the jack anti-clockwise back to where it was. Bingo! The power & punch is back, and the hiss is gone - night-and-day in a quarter-turn. So... all I need to do is pop the top off the amp and tighten the nut properly, keeping the assembly stationary. Could explain the hiss / noise issue a few people have had...? Until I get into the amp, I couldn't begin to explain what's going on behind the scenes, but if I work it out I'll post it here. Hope this helps!

    Bass DI

I was never happy with the Sansamps. I ended up with an EBS and it was better in every regard.. IMO.
  6.
Umm, that's a bit worrying. I tend to sit quite high in the mix in my band. My current sound is punchy and clear, with a bit of grit when needed. I really don't like wooly and overly bassy tone. That's the only draw back to shop auditioning, you don't get a true reflection of how you will sound in a band environment. As others have said, perhaps it was your tone adjustment or cab pairing. Kind of puts me off though, it's an expensive gamble. Cheers for all your comments guys Thebassman
Well, I wouldn't write it off. The last thing I'm interested in when it comes to gear is what it sounds like in the shop. The Streamliner is punchy and clear to me, but it's naturally punchy and clear lower down in the spectrum than most. Proper bass, IMO. It is an expensive gamble, though.
  7. Fretless P, play it fairly often. Acoustic bass... nah. I've owned a couple, but they always seem to be dogs to play, and are totally hopeless unless you plug them in. Whereupon they become almost totally hopeless. They're an early 90s hangover from MTV unplugged, I think.
  8.
FWIW- If U can PLEASE try the STL600/900 out in a BAND environment BEFORE you buy one. I personally think the SOUND of the STL is great BY ITSELF, but as soon as playing in a decent sized band (in my case I tried it with 2 of my bands -1. 8-10piece soul/funk. 2. Classic Rock 4 pice 2gtrs Bass Drums) It Just lost ALL definition. I couldn't get it to be PRESENT in the mix no matter how I tried. Maybe it was my cabs, tho I tried ALL of mine- Bergs AE112-OK. AE212- awful, AE410 OK. NV215 pretty bad, Mark bass Hr115 x 2 Just OK But in NONE of the gigs did anyone - all the band members, sound eng. reg. audience members that've seen us MANY times - think they could actually HEAR the bass (nor feel it) they said it was a "boomy mess". I tried LOTSA basses too. Obviously It's ME & the way I play also, but just saying TRY in this situation B4 buying. Remember- I did say I LOVE the tone of the STL 600/900 ...... just not in a band mix. Of course everyone's different- thank God, & luckily I still LOVE my GB Shuttle, & I CAN Crank the bass if I wanna on that! My 2c.... take it or leave it.
Ah, I guess it just clashed badly with your style or your cabs. out of interest, did you roll the lows off and push the mids a significant amount?
  9. I used to use a pair of Berg HS210s in all but the smallest gigs. Now, I almost always use a single cab... the tone of the Streamliner is perfectly placed for my needs, and thumps away where it counts quite happily with one cab.
  10.
<geordie> That's a proper canny bass. Geet lush an that like 'y'knaaar. </geordie>
Fixed a bit more.
  11.
Maybe I should try it then someone said they have developed some kind of coil to reserve current inbetween the PS and the output module, I thought it was balony, but glad to be proved wrong.. my back!!! and it has a real valve preamp as it runs in HT. All other lightweight stuff i have tried seems to be wimpy although loud it just does not have that shove of current to dump when told too haha!
Yip - the Streamliner is the first Class-D amp I've used where the notes really push, in a '3D' sort of way IYKWIM. I noticed it straight away... it was a revelation to me.
  12.
As for the difference in sound between the 70's 80's and now, a huge amount of the issue is the way things are mixed and mastered now. Everything is a competition for loudness and punch, even in folk music! Its a breath of fresh air (sorry, no, its less common than rocking horse poo) when you get an artist whoi wants a mix that is all about the song and emotional content and not just being as loud as the next CD. Blame the marketing hype, the artist, the mix engineer, the mastering engineer, radio station, but ultimately blame the stupid consumer for buying stuff more when its louder. Oh hold on, its just a fact, the human ear perceives louder as better in the short term every time. Thats a sorry but completely true fact about psychoacoustics for you. And that is ultimately what drove the horrendous loudness wars that we are still coping with now. It is a damn shame though!
+1. A Ry Cooder track ripped from a mid-80s CD popped up on my iPod t'other day. I was wearing headphones, and it was a bit quiet so I turned it up. When the drums kicked in on the intro - PUNCH! PUNCH! PUNCH! - I nearly fell off my chair. Bloody marvellous!
  13.
one line-up played 'Spirit in the Sky' with Jim sitting in the front row.
14. The Streamliner is pretty well liked by the tube amp crowd - have a read through the megathread on Talkbass if you have a day or so spare. I can see why - it does clean / warm / fuzzy-around-the-edges valve amp incredibly well. I'm not sure it's the answer if you want flat-out tube grind, though. And yes, the Promethean is very warm for a solid-state class D. I preferred it to the TC.
  15. I had a plunk on this when it was naked(!)... it felt lovely. ..and now, it looks lovely, too. Nice one!
  16. I think Neil Young nailed it years ago. His general view was: We used to listen to music... get involved in it, in the dynamic, warmth and amazing detail analogue provided. Now, we're generally reduced to listening to a flat facsimile of the original performance. It's depressing, but I think I agree with him.
  17.
what's you problem with me fag... c'mon f***in' ignorants go and eat sh*t you think you're very clever or something? you don't have a proper band and you're not goin' anywhere in the future.
18. I'd recommend the Ibanez Promethean. It's compact, it sounds great at low (and high) volume, it has an Aux in and headphone out for playing along with mp3's, and if you need to up the ante for a gig you can either add another cab, or take the head out and use it with a larger cab. I'd agree with what's been said above about the Walkabout Scout. They're not great for plunking around in the house.
  19. You might want to put that in the title, rather than your username. Good luck with the sale!
  20.
P.S. Leave poor old Adam Clayton alone..I don't care how big his house is, if I had to play what he does year in year out I'd have gone down Sainsbury's with an Uzi years ago....
