Lightweight or D class amp that sounds like a Valve amp
wateroftyne replied to thebassman's topic in Amps and Cabs
I used to use a pair of Berg HS210s in all but the smallest gigs. Now, I almost always use a single cab... the tone of the Streamliner is perfectly placed for my needs, and thumps away where it counts quite happily with one cab. -
<geordie> That's a proper canny bass. Geet lush an that like 'y'knaaar. </geordie>
Fixed a bit more.
Maybe I should try it then someone said they have developed some kind of coil to reserve current inbetween the PS and the output module, I thought it was balony, but glad to be proved wrong.. my back!!! and it has a real valve preamp as it runs in HT. All other lightweight stuff i have tried seems to be wimpy although loud it just does not have that shove of current to dump when told too haha!
Yip - the Streamliner is the first Class-D amp I've used where the notes really push, in a '3D' sort of way IYKWIM. I noticed it straight away... it was a revelation to me. -
As for the difference in sound between the 70's 80's and now, a huge amount of the issue is the way things are mixed and mastered now. Everything is a competition for loudness and punch, even in folk music! Its a breath of fresh air (sorry, no, its less common than rocking horse poo) when you get an artist whoi wants a mix that is all about the song and emotional content and not just being as loud as the next CD. Blame the marketing hype, the artist, the mix engineer, the mastering engineer, radio station, but ultimately blame the stupid consumer for buying stuff more when its louder. Oh hold on, its just a fact, the human ear perceives louder as better in the short term every time. Thats a sorry but completely true fact about psychoacoustics for you. And that is ultimately what drove the horrendous loudness wars that we are still coping with now. It is a damn shame though!
+1. A Ry Cooder track ripped from a mid-80s CD popped up on my iPod t'other day. I was wearing headphones, and it was a bit quiet so I turned it up. When the drums kicked in on the intro - PUNCH! PUNCH! PUNCH! - I nearly fell off my chair. Bloody marvellous!

The Streamliner is pretty well liked by the tube amp crowd - have a read through the megathread on Talkbass if you have a day or so spare. I can see why - it does clean / warm / fuzzy-around-the-edges valve amp incredibly well. I'm not sure it's the answer if you want flat-out tube grind, though. And yes, the Promethean is very warm for a solid-state class D. I preferred it to the TC. -
I had a plunk on this when it was naked(!)... it felt lovely. ..and now, it looks lovely, too. Nice one!

I think Neil Young nailed it years ago. His general view was: We used to listen to music... get involved in it, in the dynamic, warmth and amazing detail analogue provided. Now, we're generally reduced to listening to a flat facsimile of the original performance. It's depressing, but I think I agree with him.

Agressive bassist looking for Glam rock punk band
what's you problem with me fag... c'mon f***in' ignorants go and eat sh*t you think you're very clever or something? you don't have a proper band and you're not goin' anywhere in the future.
-
I'd recommend the Ibanez Promethean. It's compact, it sounds great at low (and high) volume, it has an Aux in and headphone out for playing along with mp3's, and if you need to up the ante for a gig you can either add another cab, or take the head out and use it with a larger cab. I'd agree with what's been said above about the Walkabout Scout. They're not great for plunking around in the house.

Yip.. leave it alone.

When Norman Watt-Roy needs a dep... who does he call?
P.S. Leave poor old Adam Clayton alone..I don't care how big his house is, if I had to play what he does year in year out I'd have gone down Sainsbury's with an Uzi years ago....
-
Infidels. Produced by Knopfler, Sly & Robbie in the engine room. Man of Peace, Union Sundown... etc. They swing like good'uns. Apart from that, his latest stuff has a great groove.

Flatwounds & Precision... why does it work so well?
wateroftyne replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
If any of you disgruntled La Bella owners want to sell, let me know... :-) I agree with a comment above... All to often, live sound engineers just don't know what to do with flats. They EQ them like rounds, and you end up with mud. It's frustrating. -
Actually, i was thinkingthe same as you, but i have to admit that my tests made me change my mind. I tried the PP & other P-Bass (same amps), and (in my hears), the PP has something more. I found it a deeper in the bass range.
Were the strings and setup of the other basses the same as the Pino? That would be a fair comparison.

I'm fairly immune to neck profiles..

I like Guy, as a storyteller and a bass player. FWFW, here's what he said:
Learning the Blockheads set for gig Saturday..Bass heaven!! Oh Norman I am not worthy..
He knows they're big shoes to fill. -
+1 Amazing little bit of kit. Probably to most versatile, reliable and affordable combo doing the rounds at the moment. The removable amp head keeps up with most of the current crop of 500W class D amp heads out there too. I won't be without mine for the foreseeable! Eude
+2. Of course, a lot is going to depend on your requirements....
Oh yeah I suppose it is! Why is the bridge so far forward though?! Bit of an uninspiring eBay ad for such an expensive bass. Why would someone sell a new custom guitar though?
Why would someone criticise an eBay ad without checking the facts first? Just sayin'.
-
It's legit - that's where the bridge is on the Custom Classics.
Hindsight being the wonderfull thing it is, I could agree, but it was my Nowt, hence the OP, and now its sorted.
I appreciate what you're saying, but hindsight generally takes the form of 'If only I knew then what I know now.' I seem to recall that people were suggesting you contact SWR all the way through the thread. I, for one, was a little puzzled why you didn't. ...until now, but it's all sorted and it's all good.

Lovely, lovely flats. Anyone who says flats do nothing but thump should get acquainted with one little word - mids.
