Faithfully memorizing bass covers - how many?
wateroftyne replied to kiat's topic in General Discussion
Exactly like the record? Not many. Faithful to the intention of the original? Loads - probably more than I think I do.
Awaiting a referral but I'm 99% sure I have Asbergers which means I have a sh*t hot memory.
mmm... Ass Burgers.. -
Well, since you asked.. Here's the brief version. I went in there a few years ago, while shopping for a Custom Shop Precision. Found just what I wanted. It was new, and for whatever reason the saddles were sky-high. I asked if someone could give it a quick tweak so I could try it with a decent setup. Norm wasn't around, but the lackeys mumbled and moaned about it. I persisted (it was a $2000 bass, after all) and they eventually took it through to the back to be tinkered with. It came back, I played it and it was lovely. So... I did the deal. My card payment went through, and one of the miserable lackeys went through the back to get the case. They came back with a standard generic Fender case. I explained it should have a CS case, case candy, etc (remember - it was a new bass). They went back in and came back with some other random case. After a few more attempts, I eventually gave up and asked them to cancel the payment. A couple of weeks later when I got home, I got my statement and I'd been charged £80 because of the difference between the buying and selling exchange rate. I rang Norm, asked if he'd meet halfway on the charges as it wasn't my fault. He responded with abuse and four-letter words. Nice.
Damn, the place with the '59 only has 2 of the buggers! One of them has the matching headstock too. This is the other one: Anyone want to guess a price?
I wouldn't give Norm a penny of my money.
I can't think what mush sounds some people must have in order to have to stack cabs to be able to hear properly.
My tone rocks. So there. And because the cab is by my ear I can lower the volume. It's all good.
Except David Gilmour's best recordings most likely didn't use any of that cryogenically frozen BS, so history would tell us that he has actually been far less successful when using it. Listening to some of his solo albums it sounds like they froze his musical ability too....
I can only agree. The Legend that is Dave should maybe spend less time freezing his cables and more time writing better songs than he has been. Incidentally, most of his last CD was recorded in the wrong key, so they had to digitally change the pitch of the majority of the tracks. I'm not surprised it sounds so lifeless.

This bass is completely awesome. It's naturally quite aggressive, but rolling the tone back makes it go all mellow and round. It'll be back in my mitts one day.

It's all wood and wire. It either works or it doesn't.

What would your ideal Class D amp be if you could spec it yourself?
wateroftyne replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
Tonally, the Streamliner is unbeatable, IMO. I'm clutching at straws to think how I could possibly improve it (bear in mind I'm a simple chap) and all I can think of is a tuner and a clip light. The RH450 is a monster when it comes to features, but the truth is I never really used any of them. -
I use a Zoom H2. It's champion...
Now that's what I'm talkin about.... I've had a hankering to try some Bergs for a while now. Those cabs look quite big physically due to the offset positioning of the 10s. How would you rate one of those cabs next to a GS112? They're expensive buggers too... am I right?
The cabs do look big in the pic, but singly they're really very compact and an easy lift. The whole shebang is very stable, and it'll never topple... especially using a micro head. I've never used a GS112, but as far as I'm aware it's quite a scooped cab. The HS210 isn't... it's got lots going on in the mids. Expensive... yes. Like Stella Artois. I'm lucky - with the Streamliner, I've hit on a perfect combination. I barely use both cabs any more. The STL and a single cab don't half chuck it out...
I had a rehearsal (low volume) with my drummer/guitarist/vocalist about 10 months back...bear in mind we did this where I lived so it wasn't that loud! The single middle pup nailed the P tone...and the front pup sounded woody warm and weirdly articulate considering it's location. I had a good few hours through the headphones along to as many different styles as I could try out, fiddled with the pup settings and it worked really well
Ah, cool. It sounded like you'd had loads of live and studio experience with it, and I was wondering how you found it.
It sounds wonderful in a mix, believe me. Before judging it, try it, that's what I did
Did you get to try one at a gig?

I had a mudbucker. Great bass, but an unusable pickup for my needs. Earthworms could hear it, but no-one else.
Bless Norwood. There are loads of bands that were improved by the use of drugs - look at the sh*t the 'clean' Chili Peppers are putting out these days.
I think that says more about how the Chili Peppers can't create anything decent without a bit of help, rather than the benefits of drugs. Ask Frank Zappa.
