Just seen a Japanese BB1100s for sale and it’s giving me GAS! I remember as a kid the bass player from Chaz and Dave had one and I loved the sound. I would point out that my parents were watching! I wasn’t an avid fan! I wonder if the 1100s is still a desirable bass?

Thanks ! Well it will be for sale 😀

Waiting on the custom preamp before doing control holes. Threaded inserts installed for pickups and control cover. A couple of sealer coats and headstock decal applied.

Great info there Andy. There is also a trend to leave voids in the finished surface. Mayones and others do a ‘raw’ finish. I haven’t tried the slurry method as I don’t often use tru oil but sounds like a great solution.

Hey, I haven’t used tung oil, but I have used Tru-oil. It’s described as a gunstock oil, but it’s used by many guitar builders. It can be applied and buffed to a lacquer like finish, or easily made to look satin. I apply thinned 50/50 with thinners, and apply many thin coats. You have to be patient and allow 24 hours between coats, and rub with 0000 wire wool too before each coat. If you need a satin look, you just need to use 0000 after your final coat has cured. I usually let that last coat cure for 3 or 4 days before buffing with the wool. Staining burl wood doesn’t always achieve what’s in your head. I find it absorbs stain at different rates and can be blotchy. I have done it using Kedo powder stains (water based), but I now tend to seal the wood, apply a few clear coats, and then apply tinted lacquer to get where I need to be. Then clear coats to finish off.

Nicely done!

Thank you sir

Ah, if you are referring to the video of the battery cover, then that doesn’t match grain at all. It’s cut from a separate piece of alder for two reasons. It’s going to be a painted bass, and it’s a solid body. With a solid body I can’t cut a drain matching cover. But the burly bass has a rear ash cap, and the grain does match.

It’s a good way to use lumber that isn’t long enough haha! Check out Grainger guitars. He cuts his neck inserts an accent and then glued back together. Just for looks. And Shuker does a similar joint. I just didn’t want an accent piece. I like how the laminates just stop.

Haha ignore my reply! They are both wrong way round! But it’s only mocked up. Here is the correct way round.
-
I might need to rotate the front one. The back pickup is correct way round
-
I pre-finished the fingerboard with tru-oil before installing the gold EVO frets. The rear of the neck has an asymmetric profile.

Doh!!! 😆

I’m making a solid alder version of this bass, mainly to try stuff out before tackling on Burly. Here’s the battery cover design IMG_7185.MOV

I started a new design, that has some features I’ve never done before, like magnetic battery cover and wood pickup covers. I had an awesome piece of camphor burl that I thought would make a great fingerboard. And I did test before using to make sure it was solid enough to hold frets. The body is ash with a cottonwood burl top. The ash has a rear cap , also in ash. And the reason for this is I wanted to cut the control and battery covers before glueing on, as I wanted the grain pattern to match. Same principal with the front. I cut the pickup shapes and then glued the top on. The fingerboard is bound, with EVO frets. Matching headstock.

The bottom 3 are bass, mid, treble (all boost only) The top 3 are passive tone (pull active/passive), Back pickup vol (pull for hum cancelling), front pickup volume
-
You must have the custom version. The preamp took some getting used to, being boost only. But nice sounding and all useable frequencies. I wish I’d bought one of these years ago!

Just picked this up today! Amazing build quality and playability. Not plugged it into my Berg gear yet, but expecting good things!

Always help to actually connect the pickup ground wire to ground! Now it sounds as expected! Its the first time I have used an Xtender pickup and adding to a Noll preamp with many knobs makes it very flexible.
-
You may remember this build some months back. I finally got round to lacquering it. I’m super pleased with it. Output is quite low and I’m not sure why, as the preamp was pre-wired. (Noll). just need to set up intonation etc.

Burly cottonwood top!

One of these has come up for sale nearby, and wondering if value has plummeted or if the are still a good buy. There’s plenty of good reviews but not much info on accurate used value. Sure, you see them on eBay and reverb but are prices inflated? cheers

Hey, just sent you a PM with attachment -
Hey guys, The bass player from Royal Hunt has a very distinctive sound. Any ideas how to achieve it? It can be heard clearly at 4:06. He has this sound on pretty much all their songs, regardless of which bass he uses. Great band by the way!

Thanks. $950 CAD not too bad then. About 550 pounds
