1.
My next bass will have humbuckers in and to start with I was wondering whether to try running them passively with a 6 way 4 pole rotary switch for selecting various combinations of the coils, apart from PRS guitars (I believe they don't do this any more) I can't think of this idea being used by manufacturers, maybe there is a reason for that. Anyone tried it or own a bass that has this set-up? maybe it's a bad idea? my thinking is that you could get some quite varied tones with the 6 options.
Many German custom bass builders use rotary switches for pickup selection, like Esh, Marleaux, Börjes, Bassline and LeFay. I've tried a LeFay Herr Schwarz with a humbucker and a singlecoil paired to a rotary switch, and I liked it a lot. The tonal options ware many! However, I personally still prefer a balance pot and a series/parallel/split switch on the bridge humbucker. To me, this seems more versatile and useful, you can dial in a far greater variety of tones.
2.
I've got are 250k, is that too low for active? The blend pot (only surving bit of electronic) seems to have 1000k pot on it, would all the pots need to be that as well?
On active instruments, pots usually have lower impedance (often 25k). 1000k seems a bit unusual to me with active pickups?
3. I wouldn't bet on it. And for that money, I would personally rather look for a used USA-made EBMM Sterling. They don't come by very often, but used prices for MM's in the UK are incredible at the moment. I would really dig a lefty version of the new SUB line! A Ray4 in black with maple board... Mmmmm! Interestingly, although they're based on the Stingray, they have the narrower 38 mm nut width of the Sterling!
4. Back when I mostly played guitar, I used to mod the hell out of my guitars. I tried various pickups, upgraded the electronics, installed graphite nuts, stringtrees and saddles, and often installed locking tuners. Oddly, on my basses, I don't have that tendency at all. The only bass I modded is my '75 Jazz Bass reissue. I installed a Badass II bridge, Hipshot tuners, a Hipshot X-tender on the E-string, a black pickguard instead of the original white one, and a cover over the neck pickup. Later on I've also tried an Audere preamp in it (with switchable pickup impedance) and played it a few times but at some point it just started gathering dust in my rack. I then had it changed back to passive, but with a rotary on/off-switch for a 6 dB active bass boost. And it absolutely rocks now, it is an awesome bass and gets played a lot :-)
5.
LeftyJ, not Fender, much better & more expensive but here you go! http://shop.taniguch...product_id=2099 http://shop.taniguch...product_id=2098 http://shop.taniguch...product_id=1677 http://shop.taniguch...product_id=1679 Here is their full lefty bass range http://shop.taniguch...?category_id=11
Yes, amazing store. I've drooled over their website many times during the past few years. I've seen those Baby Z basses before, but I don't like the PJ configuration and they look much too refined to my taste. I would much rather have one with an authentic Mustang splitcoil, or even a Strat-pickup like a Fender Musicmaster bass had, or a '51 Precision type singlecoil.
6. I find many black basses rather boring, but they can also be very chic. I love the look of my MIJ '75 Jazz reissue, but I wouldn't have liked the look of it with a rosewood fingerboard and without the pickup cover. 7. Odd bass, gold hardware on Ernie Balls is very unusual. I tried googling for other Stingray HH's with gold hardware but only found this SR5 (incidentally in the same pearl blue finish): http://viewitem.eim.ebay.ru/Music-Man-Stingray-5-HH-Bass-Guitar-Pearl-Blue-Gold-Hardware-Ernie-Ball/180852548968/item/index.en-US.html There are no special edition markings on it whatsoever. No year inlaid on the fingerboard, no Ball family reserve badge, nothing.
8. Cool. Those have been around for a while actually, but only for the Japanese market. Are they actually exporting this new FSR version?
9. I wish Fender Japan would make a lefty version of their Mustang Bass. They're really powerful little beasts, and incredibly fun to play with their short scale length. There have been a few lefty USA Mustang basses built, but they're rarer than hen's teeth. And I would LOVE to have a left handed Peavey T-40, but Peavey never made any.
10. The SRX690 was part of the first run of SRX models in 2007, and was the top of the line back then. They've discontinued it since. The SRX700 Jezzaboy mentioned above was its successor. There is no high end SRX model in the current range anymore, unfortunately.
11.
Yeah, but - do you think it's kind of uncool to list it here to get around paying to advertise it on the site? I mean, I guess we should have closed this thread to avoid people doing that, but still.
Closing this thread would be kind of sad, the lefty community here is but small and this thread makes it a lot easier for our fellow lefty forumites to find eachother, and to find cool lefty instruments both on and outside this forum. But I suppose we could make it a thread with links to our paid ads, instead of selling in this thread and getting around paying?
12. By black, do you mean black blocks and binding or a black pickguard? There aren't many MIJ 75RI's with black blocks and bindings!
13. Thanks!
Nice work. Your video editor seems to have flipped all of the shots of you, though, so it looks like you're playing backwards?
Yeah, I get that a lot
Album?
On the way! All that's left is mastering. We don't have a definitive release date yet, but it's going to be somewhere in April!
14. Now there's something you don't see every day! Very nice score. I've never seen one before, aside from catalog shots.
15. Recorded a video with my band Eve's Fall recently, we released it on Youtube last night. Enjoy!
16. Not as cheap as some of the basses in this thread, but at 230 Pounds (on this forum) this was a heck of a deal: It's a Carvin B4, the most basic and affordable model they make. Bolt-on neck, passive electronics, no frills. But I find myself playing this one more than any of my other basses when I'm at home playing on my own. It's just so bloody addictive to play, so versatile, and it sounds awesome! When I got it delivered it had flatwounds on it and very poor pots (the effect of turning them was only noticable in a very small bit of the turning range) but with a fresh set of rounds and some MEC pots it's absolutely killer
17. Someone at Warwick regularly visits this forum and posts in Warwick-related threads, posting under the name "Warwick_Official". I'm sure he'll chime in on your problem soon.
18. I like the black pickguard. Instant 1970's vibe!
19. I don't know how they did it, but I'm impressed! Here's some more of their customizing work: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.571166776243780.144427.382887438405049&type=1 And this is their own line of instruments: http://bassline-bass.de/instruments/
20. I have both a Stingray 5 (2003) and a Streamer LX5 (2003 too, incidentally). The Streamer took some getting used to, it's a completely different beast and can't be compared to anything else I've ever played. My Streamer has an ovangkol neck, and the early ovangkol versions were notorious for their chunky (understatement) profile compared to the sleeker wenge necks Warwick offered earlier. I'm not sure if 2002 was still a wenge year or if they'd already switched to ovangkol back then. The wenge necks were highly regarded for their playing comfort but the early ovangkol necks are truly a love-it-or-hate-it affair. I have big hands so I have no trouble getting around on my LX5, but it's just not as comfortable as my other 5-strings. The tone is also something I had to get used to. Compared to a Fender Jazz, both singlecoils on the LX5 are located closer to the bridge. Add up the full maple body and the ovangkol neck, and what you get is a very snappy beast with supertight lows, scooped mids and a very bright attack. I play mine in a metal band with two 7-string guitarists and it works like a charm there: lots of low end push and lots of highs to cut through the wall of distorted guitars. But played stand-alone, I don't really care for its tone. In terms of value, I think all has been said in the above. A new German-made Streamer LX5 will cost you around 3000-3200 euros at the moment. I got mine used for 500 euros from a guy who had been advertising it on and off for close to year at various price levels, in impeccable condition (aside from some natural wear to the goldplated hardware, that I replaced with black hardware last week). It is an incredible (and incredibly well-made and well-finished) instrument for the price I paid, but I wouldn't trade an SR5 HH one on one.
21. It's real, it was done by Bassline in Germany.
22. TS is a Markbass player, according to his signature. I'm pretty sure he knows how the VLE works
23. This, but left handed: And something the like of this:
24. Oh, Darren Riley offers them: http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=2034
