1. Really nice bass, just wondering if you had the chrome pickup cover as well? do they not come as standard with the 62 Reissue? Also I was wondering if you could give any idea of how old the bass is? I have tried using the Fender serial number but Fender say to remove the neck to definitively age the bass. Not expecting you to do that of course. Many thanks.
Here is my FENDER JAZZ BASS AMERICAN VINTAGE USA in black, comes with tweed hardcase. 2. Hi Mark, The line 6 stuff is good I know people who use it and like it a lot, but I think you can outgrow it very quickly and if you get further into the world of recording you will start wanting better kit. Their modelling software is good, i used it for a while and so did my best friend but I think the GarageBand amp modelling and effects stuff is as good if not better now. I went to the Apogee stand at a music show about a year ago and even the guy at Apogee was saying how good the Garage Band modelling software was at the moment. I could be wrong here but apparently a lot of what goes into Logic has filtered down into it. A lot of it is budget and how far you want to go really. My mate does the Radio 1 jingles so needs a high quality audio and therefore a high quality interface and runs the 'Duet' in the studio and the 'One' as mobile interface for his laptop and it really performs. He is actually just about to buy the MarkBass software for recording bass as he says it has some of the best sounds he has come accross, so if you just doing bass that may be an option. If you want to record guitars and everything then Guitar Rig is very good. Saying that good tones are available for bas with no modelling and just good EQ. I dont know a lot about this stuff, just picked up loads from friends, but I know GarageBand, Logic and Apogee just work incredibly well with Mac.
Hi Nathan, You have confused me now - I was all set to go for the Line 6 USB interface as I had heard good things about it but now the Apogee stuff looks good. Is the Line 6 not better because it has the option for amp modelling and effects etc? Mark
3. Drums wise I would go for software drums. Again the new Garage Band has quite good drum loops and you can program your own once you start getting more involved. I can also highly reccommend EZ Drummer. It is relatively inexpensive but if EQ'd well and mixed properly it can sound unbelieveable. Againa friend of mine does huge ammounts of production music, jingles, radio beds etc and he uses it very often along with some more expensive stuff but he loves it for it s ease of use and sound to cost ratio. Keyboard wise you can get some very good but very affordable M-Audio stuff at the moment. great place to start, all USB and it will work with what Garage Band as a starting point. NJE
Cheers guys for all of the advice coming back here it really is appreciated. Ok so it would seem sensible to stick with garage band and I am going to buy a sensible USB interface as suggested. How do I move on to get different drum loops or programme hits and accents etc - do I need a dedicated drum machine? Also if I wanted to add basic keys is it sensible to get just a keyboard module and use the standard sounds in Garageband?
4. Hi Mark, There is so much about both in terms of software and interfaces. If you already have a mac I would suggest using Garageband as a strating point. The older version I have is more than capable of making good quality demos and basic tracks and I have actually heard people do some incredibly well produced tracks on Garageband. The more recent versions are incredibly good and the amp simulations are very capable. I have friend who is in the business and does a lot of jingles, session work etc and he always reccommends Garageband as a starting point and then Logic as a next step up. He runs Protools as well but really doesnt like it so a lot is just preference. The other thing is to get a good quality interface. Personally I swear by Apogee, either their 'One' or 'Duet' as do a few friends of mine. It is superb quality and very intuative. I am pretty sure they both only work for Mac but that could just be the 'One'. Between me and my friend we have been through Line 6, Tascam, Lexicon, M-Audio and various other interfaces over the years and the Apogee just stomps all over them in terms of sound quality and if you get more involved in recording you wont need to upgrade. Recording is great fun, even just getting down bassline ideas, have fun. Nathan
Evening all, I am looking to set up a very small scale home studio for song writing and working on songs sent to me by band mates etc. I have a MacBook which has Garage Band on it although I have never really used it. Questions is would it better to use this a starting point and buy a USB interface to record into Garage Band or is a hardware option better such as the Belkin 4 track recorder which records direct to an ipod or the Boss Micro Studio etc? I am not a fan of programming drum machines but am pretty computer literate. Any advice or guidance on this one would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
5. That was a very very special Stingray, i dont know why but there was just something about it. The neck was ok when I got it but I wanted to protect it and clean it up a little so I contacted ernieball who said use birchwood casey true oil and gun stock wax and the result was pretty good, that bass stayed around a while. Strange thing is I went through a "I am a 5 string player" phase and sold it and now I am trying to get my hands on one again and shift my Overwater Jazz 5. Oh how fickle I am.......swings and roundabouts again..
lol I do indeed. She's a fantastic beast. And I returned the neck back to the way god (or Leo) intended. Swings and roundabouts eh?
6. Cheers for the comments, I am going to have a look at this 87 again this afternoon and see if a deal could possibly be struck. £1300 seems high as i have also seen similar era basses go for less on eBay and on here. It is mint and even the string mutes are immaculate but still its a lot of money. I love Rays but the problem for me is that I really dislike the non finished necks, I LOVE gloss necks, which is why I refinished the neck on my old Ray (which I believe Ou7shined now owns). This ultimately restricts me with Stingrays which is why I have also been looking at the new classic series. They have everything I want in bass pretty much, birdseye maple, gloss and the funky bridge. The only thing I am not too sure about is the slab body, oh and the price of £1350 for one on here. I am ultimately looking for something that wont takle too much of a hit price wise if I have it for a few years and sell. Maybe these 80s Stingrays will be the future collectables as they will be approaching 'vintage' age at 30 years soon. Maybe best to try and pick up a bargain 80s after all.
  7. Apologies in advance for a slight hijack but I am looking at a few Stingrays at the moment and was wondering if any of you MusicMan aficionados would be able to comment on price for me? I am looking at a 87 Stingray for £1300 and was wondering if this was about normal for an early-ish Ray? seems a little hight to me? Thanks, Nathan

    SOLD!

Make me an offer trades or cash! I did think I was doing the wrong thing earlier this week but still think a 4 string is the right move.
  9.
Farmer does a credit check come into play? Pitfalls?... my credit rating is not the best...
Hey Bub, I went up to see Mark a couple of weeks ago as i desperately needed a new Amp for upcoming gigs. I was going to sell my current setup to fund it but couldnt be without an amp so I stuck the best park of 1k on the 'Take it Away' scheme. I am sceptical about things like this because they sound too good to be true but it was absoluetely fine. Yes there is a credit check but I have had huge problems with my bank in the past (nealry cost me gettinga mortgage) but I was absolutely fine. Its 9 months and you just pay the biggest deposit you can. I only have a few months of 80 odd pound payments to make (most covered by selling my amp) and I will have a new rig to show for it at the end. To me it just made sense, when will you ever get 9 months interest free on anything.

    Daveybass

Dave (aka Daveybass) recently bought my Aguilar cab and i just wanted to say what an absolute gentleman he is to deal with. Great comms and swift payment leading up to the transaction and a pleasure to deal with while we had a slight hiccup with delivery. Without going in to too much detail, the courier I used (DHL ) managed to damage the cab in transit and I was away when Dave received it. Instead of getting shirty and and upset when he got no response from me, he was a true gent and stayed cool as a cucumber and was EXTREMELY patient while I tried to claim my money back from DHL. It took weeks to sort out a payment for Dave and he was very understanding at all times with great comms throughout. Do not hesitate in dealing with this man, he is a true Gentleman! All the best Dave.
  11. I have just completed a trade with Paul (aka PGTIPS) and he is a top chap, great communication, and I am totally happy with my new Case. Another fantastic transaction on Basschat. Cheers Paul

    SOLD!

I had a bass in mind when I decided to sell this but I am not so keen on it anymore. I am now interested in trades for the right 4 string bass and have edited the opening post to reflect this. Ideally I am ideally after something a MusicMan Stingray but If anyone has a Fender Custom or Nordstrand, Sadowsky or something with a Leo vibe I would be able to add some cash to a trade. All the best, Nathan
  13. Never played a Fender Reggie but I can honestly say that GB basses are stunning in every way. Dont worry if you have the ability or about just playing it at home, if you like it and if it will make you play more and make you happy then go for it i say. There is one on ebay at the moment as well for £1300 buy it now. I am conteplting getting a used GB spitfire at the moment but its a lot of cash for me at the moment. DO IT I SAY!
  14. I never saw this thread first time around and it makes for some interesting reading. I have been thinking about the whole 'investment' bass and what will retain or grow in value recently and I am looking around for what brands and instruments will keep their money and wondering what is the vintage Fender of the future? The reason I ask is that I have been looking at the secondhand value of some of the high end custom guitars available like Sei, Overwater and GB and secondhand they make nowhere near their original price. I have an Overwater and have been looking to buy a GB Spitfire. I have seen one that was a show piece which would have been the best part of 3k new up for sale in immaculate condition for £1300 which to me is rediculous. I would love a custom bass built to my spec but I know at some point I am liable to get into a financial situation or get bored and need to sell it at some point and the thought of losing over half the original price seems quite scary. Yes you should have an instrument you love and play and enjoy without doubt, but would I be better of investing in something like a limited run Fender Custom Shop? They seem to hold their value quite well and seem to be in demand. Similarly I have seen NYC Sadowskys go for high prices secondhand. Are custom shop Fenders and Sadowskys more likely to hold value? is ther another brand like Alleva Coppollo that will be a future classic? I know Wal's go for silly money but are they likely to go up any more now that they are being built again? Who knows but interesting to hear peoples point of views on the subject.

    SOLD!

Hi everyone, Trying a different approach to my descriptions when selling so all details and info is below, hopefully its a bit more to the point than I usually am About the Bass: This is an Overwater J Series 5 string Custom Classic, built in 2003. As far as I am aware it is an Ash body (it feels and sounds very similar to my old Fender which was Ash) but the Classic J Series have an option of Tulipwood or Sycamore as well so it could well be either of those. It also has a maple neck with a Birdseye Maple fingerboard which is stunning. The hardware is all Hipshot, Ultralite tuners and B style bridge. The pickups are Kent Armstrong’s made for Overwater before they started using their own I believe, and the bass is fitted with a John East BTB-01 EQ. This is essentially the Bass/Treble stack pot from the J-Retro 01 which is bass boost only, treble cut and boost, and a pull for ‘bright’. I don’t like a lot of knobs on basses so this is perfect for me. The Bass and Treble are very flexible as you would expect from John East and the bright is great for slap. Why I am selling it if it’s so great: I have had the bass several months and it is fantastic in every way. This is my second Overwater and the build is stunning, the sound is fantastic, and it plays like a dream. The simple reason for sale is that I am just not getting a lot of use out of the B string and I have a bad GAS attack for something new, it is no reflection on the bass, just fancy something different. I am looking for a really nice 4 string and need to raise some cash to fund it. In an ideal world, like most folks on here, I would have the cash to keep it. Condition: This is not a bass that has been sat in a bedroom or stuck on a wall, never played, never gigged, never been out of the house. It is a working bass and is 7 years old this month and as such it has marks and knocks. If you want an exhibition/museum piece this is not the bass for you, it has been played and loved and used like an instrument should. The most notable knock is the one on the edge of the body which I pictured below. I got the bass in a trade and it came to me in this condition. I had my second thoughts about taking a bass with damage (I usually like mint condition basses) but in fact because it had a few marks I wasn’t too overprotective of it and happy to gig it. Before the bass arrived I had the cash to pay for a re-spray with Overwater in case it bothered me, but to be honest, once I received it played it and plugged it in I never gave it another thought. I saved the cash and it has not bothered me since. I also did think about having the jack moved to the end of the bass and convert to 4 knobs so the jack would be where the mark is but again it didn’t bother me that much but may be an option for anyone interested in it. The knock doesn’t affect the playability and you don’t know it’s even there unless you turn it up on end. It also has a few tiny marks which don’t show in the photographs and some buckle rash which I have tried to capture in the pictures. Again all marks and dings were on the bass when I got it, I have not added any more. I accept that on most instruments, dings and knocks reduce value, unless of course you have a vintage Fender in which case it’s put down as mystical ‘Mojo’ and a good thing, so I have reflected its condition in the price below. Price: I got this in a trade for a bass that was itself traded and so on, so judging a price for this is difficult as I didn’t hand over any money. So I have done my best to judge a fair price and here is the logic behind it. If you feel my calculations are incorrect and have an opinion on what I should be charging please PM me with your thoughts and I will happily take comments on board. A new Overwater J Series Classic starts at £2095, a figured Maple fingerboard is an extra charge of £195, Hipshot Hardware judging by the overwater site is an extra £100, and the John East BTB unit is £107. This gives a replacement value of approx £2497. I have seen Overwater J Series basses up on here for anything between £1000 for more ‘standard’ spec, and up to £2000 for some good condition basses which were a bit fancier. I am asking for £950 for this with like new Hiscox case (which didn’t come with the bass originally and retail at about £70). I feel in mint condition this bass would be worth about £1200 so I have taken off the rough price of a re finish or the cost of a new preamp and relocating the jack to the end of the bass. Trade wise I am after a four string, and I am looking for a MusicMan Stingray or Fender Jazz although open to anything with a Fender inspired design. There is also possible cash available towards the right bass if you have something along the lines of: Fender Custom Shop, Vintage Fender, Nordy, Sadowsky etc. Other info: If anyone is genuinely interested and wants to come and play the bass they are welcome and I will happily ship it insured but will need to discuss postage costs first. I will take PayPal but obviously cash on collection would be ideal all round. Please PM me if you have any questions, and now pictures:

    GB guitars

The Overwater is stunning, plays equally as well as the GB but when you get to the level of build of both GB and Overwater I think there is only really difference rather than better. The Overwater has a much more 'Fender-ish' vibe to it but beautiful build and mine has a birdseye fingerboard which is lovely. I am just finding I dont use the B much and my current band arent keen on it either. I just think it may be time for a change and get something smaller, lighter and with a string less. Wish I could afford multiple basses and hang on to it as it is stunning and has a wicked tone but I just dont have the money.
Ha!..yeah the playability was awsome...an all round stunner...well the GAS is your demon, all i can do is egg you on.. whats the Overwater like? yeah sorry Mikeg...
Yeah it was fine when I played it last, it could have been the very small ashdown I played it through or maybe flat battery. Still a fantastic bass, so clear and precise sounding, absolutely love it. Its the weight I love too, very well balanced you feel like you could play it for days without a twitch in the back. Yeah Mark definately wants a sale. He has some nice vintage basses and plays a lot of upright from what his wife has told me. You are just adding fuel to the fire, I wanted this when i first moved to Cheltenham a few years ago and to find it still for sale is just too tempting. Anyway apologies for hijacking the thread, as you can see there are a lot of people that are very enthusiastic about GB basses, go try one out, oh and there is one going on eBay at the moment, maple neck and trans blue body with what looks like quilt maple.
No i played it a month ago..didnt notice mate but i didnt fiddle too much...the bass was very hifi like my Modulus but had more to it....i do remember it being very light, and easy to play.the bound fingerboard is killer and the top and headstock is so nice... ..its such a nice bass, and awsome looking...i asked Mark if he would trade for the Fender or the Modulus but i couldnt talk him round...he wants a sale... .do it bro, if it was me i would sell the Overwater and grab this..its a beauty...one of Bernies best
GB guitars

GB basses are stunning, I have had the pleasure of playing 3 now and all mind blowing. They are expensive but for what you are getting they are worth it for what you get. Just to sidetrack slightly, Bubinga 5, I was in yesterday playing Marks Spitfire too, did you actually play it yesterday? If so did you notice that the EQ on it was a little odd? When i plugged in the treble and bass seemed to do very little, but the mid control had the normal range. Might just have been the amp but I couldnt get the range out of it like I did last time I played it. I love this bass and am actually thinking of going back to 4 string and selling my Overwater J to buy it just a stunning bass.
yes played the ONE in around about sound in cheltenham...it was awsome...very special instrument this bass... here is the link...spoke to him yesterday and hes selling...light as a feather and so many tones available.... if i could i would... 21. Pre eBay BUMP! will happily considder offers on price.
  22. This amp is not a "previous version of this amp" it is a Ashdown Electric Blue, I never claimed this was the latest EVOII version, I clearly stated it was 2 years old. I was merely saying that a new electric blue would cost £225 which is correct, and if I remeber correctly £225 was about the price this was new approx 2 years ago. If you felt my listing was in any way misleading you should have PM'd me with any constructive criticism or comments, and I would have tried to clear any misleading details up.
This is the previous version of this amp. The new Evo II version, (which sells for £225 new) has a variable compressor as well.
23. Well spotted, I have just checked and this is the 12 inch version not the 15 inch, apologies. Thanks for the kind words, these are incredibly good amps and if it wasnt for some massive spending on a new rig recently I would have had it.
I'm probably wrong but that looks like the 12" version to me? Either way, these are fantastic amps and well worth a punt for practicing or even small pub venues from personal experience
24. Hello everyone, On behalf of my very good friend I am selling a Ashdown Electric Blue 180 with a 12" speaker. He is a professional guitarist/composer and a good bass player and bought this amp for use at home and for a handful of acoustic performances he did on bass with an artist he was working with. Here is one of his sites: http://www.owengurry.com/ It is approx 2 years old and in excellent condition and has been kept in a smoke free home. It is a great sounding combo with plenty of guts, and sounds extremely good with his 5 string Lakland. It is 180 watt RMS with extension speaker out which can turn this into a good gigging option with extension cab. These are £225 new and I would like to get somewhere around £140 for it but happy to listen to offers. The amp is currently located in Sevenoaks (TN13 1BH) and collection is more than welcome. My friend has also said he will consider meeting up or courier if needed. Please Read: I understand that selling for other people can cause some concern and be a little suspicious. My friend is not a member and didn’t want to sign up to a community/forum just to sell amp, so I agreed to post for him. I have good feedback on the forum and am happy to do the deal with anyone interested or I can pass on my friends details and you can deal with him direct. He has huge positive feedback on eBay and I am more than happy to endorse him on this forum and be responsible for the transaction. PM me if you have any questions. Edit for change of details.
  25.
I've just found an article on the subject - an interview with Chris May about the Aspiration series. But dammit, they don't exist without pictures...
Thanks for posting that, I have been keeping and eye out for developments on these new guitars. The prototypes in the pictures look very good, very overwater and they dont have that nasty headstock that the previous prototypes had. That PJ Jazz still looks excellent, I am praying there is going to be a 5 string Jazz coming.
