1.
My brand new 6-string fretless Progress III arrived today; blown away doesn't even describe it. I'll probably post some more pictures later with a decent camera, but for now it's play times!
The pickups look like they're made of chocolate .
2. GAS mostly . Seriously though, it is a beautiful instrument that is utterly astounding to play, but - tonally I want to hear a Musicman and this isn't quite there. It's a little more reserved and probably better suited to someone who'll get the most out of it. A few years ago I was after a Stingray 5HH (after having a 4H for a while) and couldn't get one so traded for a Lakland 55-02 (MM/J pickups) - this was great, but again the sound wasn't the same as a Ray. Then had a Corvette 5 $$, but too Warwicky sounding (baseball bat neck too) ! Eventually here I am with the Overwater, the highest quality (construction and sound) bass i've ever had, but i'm still lusting after that ballsy Musicman sound, even though I know it is in essence - a downgrade. I'm going to PMT tomorrow to play a Bongo 4H to see if I can find fault with it, might take the Overwater too to A/B them, it may make me see sense !
3. You're considering ordering 2 custom basses from a luthier whose basses you've never tried out ?
4. Or buy it for £1200 (offers considered) and i'll track a Bongo down myself . Or a Stingray 5HH.. next best thing !
5.
I have been able to touch type for years & it's not made any difference in my playing ability that I can see.
+1. I was touch typing before I played guitar and thought it would help, made zero difference.
6. The standard Epi T-Bird (non-pro) pickups are quite high output IMO, I don't think changing them would be of huge benefit - especially considering the cost of the pickups compared to the cost of the bass.
7. FFS ! Bongo GAS has come back with a vengeance . Anyone looking to do a straight swap for a Bongo 5/6 (excellent condition) has a deal.
8. I use a Stagg one but because of the way the padded fork slots into the main stand, it twists at an angle that allows the T-Bird to remain upright. I'll take a pic later if I remember..
9. I can't think of any basses that actually do have active pickups, just preamps. Why do you want to change them anyway ?
10. I wouldn't mutilate your Jazz by having it rerouted - it won't make it more valuable. I think you'd be better of selling it and getting the Aerodyne you really want.
11. You and me both sunshine, have a bump .
12. This thread is 3 years old, you are better off PMing the seller rather than reviving the thread from the grave !
13. Oh, hmmm. I've never tried to so will experiment and let you know.
14. The influx of yamyams must be purged !
15. This subject has been done to death, but... the way I see it in a lot of cases: Bassist X plays a Fender and is in a famous band. Beginner Y loves the band/player and wants the same bass as him so gets a Squier, after saving up he buys the Fender and thinks it's the best thing possible because that's what his hero plays.
16. I agree on the vibe that classic instruments have, seeing all your heroes playing them makes them a wonder to behold if you get one eventually. But, this doesn't mean they are the best instruments available. Playing something modern can give you a different insight into your playing and may indeed make life easier for you, it depends if you're already content with what you have - if so then perhaps GAS is making itself known .
17. Stop bumping this please, i'm trying to pretend it's not really here !
18. You owe me some new trousers .
19. I have that feeling more now than I have for years, doesn't stop GAS trying to tempt me to get more though !
20. I've got a bit of a soft spot for the EB-3 - would love one with some flats on it.
21. Sorry we only allow the sale of 2nd hand instruments. Do you mean this bass is not new, but in new condition ?
22. I got my Dad to make me one from a blank piece of tort that cost about £10 (loads spare after too). Sure it wasn't as neat as the expensive ones but it looked fine, could only see the rough edges from a few inches away. Regarding the Fender ones - they'll be good but not £28 better than the one for £12. Personally i'd go for the cheap one unless you want an 'all original parts' bass and don't care how much it costs.
23. First: Yamaha RBX775 / Ashdown Electric Blue-12 180 Current: Overwater Progress / Ashdown ABM300/MAG210
24. You could try changing the pickups/bridge/tuners as well as the body and neck .
25. It won't be a con, PMT just happen to have a particularly crap website.
