  1. OK so here's the low down after 30 mins. Very well made, the finish and colour is pretty damned awesome and better than I expected. A few minor finishing details are present, such as untidy pickup routing and loose solder in electronics cavity, and a bit of swirling on the black rear. Came with D'Addario XLs (thats £35 right there) and sounds spot on unplugged. Setup i'll give a moderate rating, neck straight but a couple of buzzing frets high up and intonation is out slightly for high chords. Tuners do their job, would prefer them a little tighter maybe. Plugged in - it's what I hoped for. Very reminiscent of the Dingwall NG sound (I had one, I can say that) and the pickup pan and passive bypass work a treat. The achilles heel of the bass (and so many other cheap instruments) is the EQ. It actually sounds OK, the bass/mid/treble do what you'd want and aren't excessive - but there is a background 'fuzz' as the note decays. Go passive and it's not there. I will get some Servisol on the pots in case that is the issue, but I can totally live with it for the price. For a bass that cost only £299, it compares very well against a bass that costs 6 x as much (Dingwall NG2 6 is currently £1800). Obviously this isn't a fair review as it was a very quick review/summary, but still - how the hell does this bass cost 300 quid ? I know Dingwalls are much higher spec and their QC is better, but i'd rather the £1500 change, thanks. EDIT: It looks from the grain on body/neck that I have the exact same bass from the Gear4Music Website.
  2. OK so unboxing now. Impressed.
  3. I had one just like that just with a pickguard. Still not sure why I sold it, would have it back but the prices have gone up since.
  4. My sixer is due by noon tomorrow. I'll upload pics in between "working from home".
  5. Thanks, i've been here 3 years after previously working private sector safeguarding shareholder profits, I realised after longer than I should that I hated it and needed to do something that had real world value.
  6. IT Manager for NHS Blood & Transplant. Mostly ensuring our Blood Donor Portal & Organ Donation websites are working and coping with demand and a few projects bits too.
  7. I've already got the idea of a refin. Solid colour might look pretty decent if the wood looks like crap.
  8. Mine is coming Weds apparently.
  9. Free 30 day return policy is worth a dabble.
  10. I did not in fact, behave.
  11. This is definitely one of the most bemusing posts i've seen here for some time. I can only suggest the OP is not socially aware and lacks some element of normal brain function (EDIT: And that's being said by someone with Asperger's). I've recently shifted 3 basses (nearly £2k worth) to help fund a round of IVF, maybe I should have just put a sob story on Basschat instead. EDIT: My main bass is now a Squier VM Jazz, to confirm my new found love for cheap instruments.
  12. Maybe they ran out of blue stain.
  13. This is good news as I am trying to behave.
  14. The tuners are pretty small, I think they can stop it being worse, but won't ever remove the issue. That's pure physics of the body shape and headstock.
  15. I stopped going a few years ago after being quite regular there. Pondered going yesterday, but couldn't be bothered with the drive (25 miles) and car park woes. I've found it to be fairly dull from a bass point of view, and there was a lot of snakeoil salesmen there. Also found there to be very few bargains, with some stands selling strings at RRP after you paid about 20 quid to get in.
  16. Yeah - they were good, just severely lacked in desirability and didn't really seem to have any USP over Lakland Skylines.
  17. If I sell something I failed on (without financial loss) does that put me back to as if I had never failed to start with ? 🙄
  18. I was familiar with the concept but an interesting read. Looks like it's related to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Syndrome
  19. First concert - Run DMC (Reading Festival 2001) Last concert - Dream Theater (Symphony Hall, Birmingham, 2017) Best concert - Haken (O2 Academy, 2017) Worst concert - Manic Street Preachers (Reading 2001) Loudest concert - Periphery Seen the most - Fear Factory Most surprising - Slipknot Next concert - none lined up Wish I would have seen - Black Sabbath 1999
  20. Dare I challenge why it has to be American made ? Is this a genuine preference for US instruments based on their quality, or an ego led requirement ?
  21. Assume in my post, that everything I buy has been suitable in terms of weight, playability and looks. This is a subject specifically about cost.
  22. I guess personal circumstances are relevant too. I made most of the big purchases when I was living on my own and had the spare cash following redundancy/divorce/house sale. Since then i've got remarried and my priorities are quite different to then. Whilst I have a bit in the savings, i'd feel immensely reckless and irresponsible to have the same mindset now as a couple of years ago. Yes I do work hard and deserve some fruits of that labour, but I see my resources as collective and the potential of it not solely my own. I'm finding i'm changing my mindset generally away from 'collecting' anything to a more efficient and minimalist lifestyle. The whole concept with expensive things I've applied to my car as well, going from a 2016 Skoda Octavia (cost £22k) now to a 2008 Mini (£3k). No more £300 a month on 'renting' a car you don't own. Also moved from a large 3 bed bungalow to a 4 bed terraced house saving a bit per month. I am earning the same amount of money as before (if not more) but just ensuring it is spent more effectively.
  23. In the last 2-3 years i've had some very decent gear and have found that it doesn't really bring me any more happiness than the cheaper stuff I thought it would make obsolete. In this period I've had: Musicman Bongo 5 HS Dingwall NG3 Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Musicman Stingray 5 HH Spector Euro 6LX And having traded or sold them all, I'm currently gigging (in order of preference) Squier VM Jazz Yamaha RBX775 Fender MIM Precision I think the reason for my fickleness is that i'm playing pub gigs for 50 quid a couple of times a month, and taking £1k+ of bass seems a bit ridiculous. Also since I know I can do the same job with cheaper stuff, having a few grand of instruments in capital doesn't seem as sensible as cash in the bank for real life things (car repairs, booking a holiday, etc) Anyone else gone through expensive stuff and reverted back to beginner/average stuff ? The GAS seems to always want to move me up in the market, but I know deep down it's a waste of effort, i'll feel guilty after the purchase, and will sell again within a few months. But if I know I will not lose money (even sometimes make a bit), and have the spare cash, it does feel like a fun hobby 😎.
  24. Sounds like it's downtuned with the wrong gauge strings. That said, they don't look like utter tripe and I am considering a dabble on the 6.
  25. I've got a 2005 and had it's a keeper. Judge it individually.
