1. A cheap tort will look as such. Proper ones seem to have real depth to the pattern and don't look so 'printed'.
2. My Lakland has done a few gigs but always been very well treated. I've had it for 3 years now and it is pretty much immaculate, so I think whenever the first major ding happens I will not be happy and probably try and repair it (if paintwork). My Precision is 10 years old and I got it 2nd hand, it's also in decent condition but as it's quite common (MIM) and replaceable, I don't feel as precious about it. Also there is somewhat of a fashion for beat up Fenders, which leads on to my Strat. It's a MIJ 54 Reissue with a nitro finish. It's got a few bits missing on the back and sides and I feel no need what so ever to treat it nicely - you'd pay big money for this if done in the Fender factory. I'm not exactly throwing it around, but i'm not as careful when putting back in the stand.
3. I find boredom is a big factor. At the moment I REALLY want a red Precision with a maple neck. It won't do anything my existing instruments can't but it looks nice. When I take a break from all my instruments I come back to them and I swear they sound better than when I last played them.
4. Putting my chips down on the offender having debt or addiction problems.
5.
This is theft pure and simple. Call the cops.
I believe it's obtaining goods via deception. He was given it willingly on a premise of payment afterwards.
6. Wow. I am more surprised you trusted a total stranger with a few grand than that they disappeared without trace. This should go straight to the Police.
7. I upgraded my Cort GB75 with Aguilar pickups and it's a massive improvement, however the preamp is still colouring the sound a little which I dislike. I am tempted to remove it altogether and just have a passive bass since there's already £200 of pickups in a £75 bass, I don't fancy another £150 on a new preamp.
8. I've gone through about 25 instrument in the past 14 years, it has been an expensive but fun journey through many different types of basses until I found out what it is I generally get on with. Every one I have sold has had a good reason for me not using it, and I am sure my acquisitions will slow down a lot now I have such a versatile range I can do anything with. There is nothing I don't love and I can't think of anything i'd swap them for (price relative).
9. I've gone from 6, to 4, to 5. I like having enough that I sometimes forget I have one and it feels like NBD if it's been a while since I played it. I downsized from 6 as 3 were effectively so low in the pecking order I might as well not have them, so wanted to release some capital. So sold 2 of them with the mind that one of those 3 i'd want again some day (and I did). A 5th instrument was not by choice, but as a gift so no guilt.
10. Generally both pickups on full, but will solo either depending on circumstance.
11. That is a massive price range and you can probably buy most things you want 2nd hand. Define what you want and start there (look at new values of £1000-£1800 as indicators).
Warwicks aren't popular at the minute. Some of the prices i've seen some German made ones go for are ridiculous.
I sold my Korean Pro Series for £350 recently - which I think was quite a result considering the Germans go for about that.
12. My only experiences are a 99 Jazz that was OK, pickups were poor so replaced with Nordstrand which helped a lot. I also have a 2005 Precision which is stock but sounds and plays great. I may change the pickup again but only through curiosity.
13. I haven't bought it for years, i'm interested mostly in gear reviews and they seem to only have mostly high end £2k+ stuff from the same few brands which is limiting their audience massively. I would love to see some comparisons rather than sycophantic reviews to avoid upsetting the luthier/distributor/manufacturer and never get anything else to review. Then again, it's still running after all this time, so there must be enough of a market for the content, it just doesn't seem to be in 'main stream' players.
14.
We used to cover that when it was current. Good fun to play. I used to sing backing vox, god those harmonies go high!
I'll be skipping the rapping part but can cope with the rest of it.
15. My band are covering By The Way which is very fun on bass (I have to sing too, dammit). I may suggest some of the newer ones as they are generally popular, if a bit less intense to play.
16. Wow that was a long review ! My ATK200 I think is more versatile than a Stingray due to the coil switch.
17. Good riddance. The mods on that forum were idiots.
18. I have spare Fender Jazz pickups and was thinking of doing this to my Precision. I decided against it as I have plenty of other basses that have bridge pickups. I take this for what it is.
19. My only 'negative' comment is that as the shop has got so popular, Mark has employed staff to allow him to cope with the demand (and deal with the mundane stuff like packaging sold items or restringing instruments). I've known Mark for nearly 10 years, and we have a friendly relationship - when I walk in there with the new guys (some recognize me but not by name) I don't feel I have the same rapport with them and to them, I am just 'another customer'.
20.
Do excuse me if I've asked this before, but has anybody tried converting one of these to a baritone guitar? Only, doing a bit of spec comparison with Squier's VM Baritone Jazzmaster (which also seems to be quite well-regarded), it seems they have the scale length, but the Bass VI has more tonal variety, is slightly cheaper, and the trem would probably be of more use on a baritone guitar than a bass. Not that I'd rule out buying one to use as a bass; I just have an intermittent but nagging curiosity about baritone guitars.
I tried a bit of djent on it, the single coils are just too weedy.
21. My Dad has one. I find they are actually superb for chordal playing rather than as a normal bass. But agreed the stock strings are awful and the tremolo pointless.
22. A low F# is more of a feeling. Check out Periphery or Haken.
23. With the huge versatility I have in my instruments now, I struggle to justify things to myself other than on aesthetics. e.g. I want a maple boarded P bass and a fiesta red Jazz - but it will not expand on any sound palette I have available to me. I bought a Musicman SUB5 on a whim for a decent price a couple of months ago, got it home and realised it didn't do anymore than my Cort GB75 soundwise, so took it back the next day (refunded no problem). Financially my wife and I are comfortable with a bit of cash each month to squander, I could probably afford to drop £1-2k on a bass on 0% finance for 12 months with no massive detriment to our monthly finances, but i'd rather we spent the cash on dining out and family time.
24. I played a Stingray 5 with no battery. It still sounded fantastic.
