Those who are more 'gear orientated' are likely to hang out on a forum about basses, rather than music (irrelevant of instrument). Some bassists (and by that I mean people that own a bass whether or not they play it) have a cheapo Squier/Ibanez/Yamaha and don't really know much else about them.

Only defret if you never intend to sell as it will be worth even less than it is now otherwise. Nb I'd pay £400 for that configuration if I was in the market currently.

I was most offended ! Regarding part 1, i've never been told off for getting a bass down but consider myself considerably cautious when doing so. I've also been going there since it opened so i'd like to think people know i'm not headstock banger.

To produce some really indepth videos will be very time consuming and a pain - remember it is a shop that is open 6 days a week. They can hardly lock the doors to avoid interruptions. I think improved sound quality and more typical playing would be enough.

I can see these flopping massively and being discontinued fairly quickly. Everyone remembers the Gamechanger ? Right ? Oh.

I've just done more research, this is in fact a 54RI not a 57RI according to http://freespace.virgin.net/john.blackman4/50s.htm.

My Dad is somewhat of a Stratoholic and has 4 US Strats and 4 Jap. The Japs are all for sale in a local store but not getting anywhere (prices a bit high in my opinion). There are 2 mid 80s Contemporary Series (1 x Fiesta red, 1 x sunburst) with Schaller locking tremolos, and also a standard Sunburst with 2 x P90 pickups (modded). There's also a more traditional mid-90s 1957 reissue (2 tone sunburst, maple neck). I've persuaded him he won't miss the 57 RI and to give it to me (more of a long term loan, i'd give it back if I didn't want it anymore). I've had a few guitars over time but never really felt any affinity with them to spend a lot of time learning, this one I hope will inspire me to actually learn to play properly. There are many I wish I had again, but for each one there was a reason I sold them. I just remind myself frequently what the reason was to avoid kicking myself too hard. I think the only one I'd like back is the Peavey T-40, but I never really enjoyed playing it except live.

My Dad has a few Strats so I get to play them quite frequently. I generally go for the bridge OR neck pickup, and occasionally bridge/middle. Middle on it's own just sounds odd. He also has 2 x Strat with an S-1 switch, but they have different functions. I'm nowhere near understanding them yet.

My Lakland 55-60 Custom. No other bass I have tried feels as comfortable or sounds as naturally awesome.

I think I remember by Peavey T-40 nearly hitting 12lbs. At least 1lb of that was the bridge, the pickups were weighty, body large and no cut aways. Heaviest bass i've ever had. Conversely my Cort GB75 feels like a feather (same body/neck wood as the T-40), I'll try and weigh it to give some comparison.

Different continent, different culture. They are a lot bigger than Basschat so it must be working for them.

And also don't forget: MIM = Made in Mexico (by Mexicans in Ensenada) MIA = Made In America (by Mexicans 150 miles away from Ensenada).

My Dad has a Fender Stevie Ray Vaughan Artist Stratocaster (about £1600) but he has never listened to any SRV. He just liked the way it looked and sounds.

No sig basses here, I always imagine that people that do have one also have posters of the player on their bedroom wall.

Standarad D'Addario Longscales are indeed too short (I have a Lakland 35" 55-60)

I don't intend to buy anything*, but I do intend to actually learn to play the instrument better than I have done the years before. * But probably will

I was a member of this forum before it existed and a mod/admin for 7 years (I quit through choice, due to the tedium of people coming up with ideas we've discussed many times before, like you know - this one). We know what works - we don't need to change it, no benefit will be seen except to you. There are plenty of places to sell things, we have rules in place that are clearly visible. There is no democracy suggested.
