1. I haven't bought it for years, i'm interested mostly in gear reviews and they seem to only have mostly high end £2k+ stuff from the same few brands which is limiting their audience massively. I would love to see some comparisons rather than sycophantic reviews to avoid upsetting the luthier/distributor/manufacturer and never get anything else to review. Then again, it's still running after all this time, so there must be enough of a market for the content, it just doesn't seem to be in 'main stream' players.
2. "Never been played"
3.
We used to cover that when it was current. Good fun to play. I used to sing backing vox, god those harmonies go high!
I'll be skipping the rapping part but can cope with the rest of it.
4. My band are covering By The Way which is very fun on bass (I have to sing too, dammit). I may suggest some of the newer ones as they are generally popular, if a bit less intense to play.
5. Wow that was a long review ! My ATK200 I think is more versatile than a Stingray due to the coil switch.
6. Good riddance. The mods on that forum were idiots.
7. I have spare Fender Jazz pickups and was thinking of doing this to my Precision. I decided against it as I have plenty of other basses that have bridge pickups. I take this for what it is.
8. My only 'negative' comment is that as the shop has got so popular, Mark has employed staff to allow him to cope with the demand (and deal with the mundane stuff like packaging sold items or restringing instruments). I've known Mark for nearly 10 years, and we have a friendly relationship - when I walk in there with the new guys (some recognize me but not by name) I don't feel I have the same rapport with them and to them, I am just 'another customer'.
9.
Do excuse me if I've asked this before, but has anybody tried converting one of these to a baritone guitar? Only, doing a bit of spec comparison with Squier's VM Baritone Jazzmaster (which also seems to be quite well-regarded), it seems they have the scale length, but the Bass VI has more tonal variety, is slightly cheaper, and the trem would probably be of more use on a baritone guitar than a bass. Not that I'd rule out buying one to use as a bass; I just have an intermittent but nagging curiosity about baritone guitars.
I tried a bit of djent on it, the single coils are just too weedy.
10. My Dad has one. I find they are actually superb for chordal playing rather than as a normal bass. But agreed the stock strings are awful and the tremolo pointless.
11. A low F# is more of a feeling. Check out Periphery or Haken.
12. With the huge versatility I have in my instruments now, I struggle to justify things to myself other than on aesthetics. e.g. I want a maple boarded P bass and a fiesta red Jazz - but it will not expand on any sound palette I have available to me. I bought a Musicman SUB5 on a whim for a decent price a couple of months ago, got it home and realised it didn't do anymore than my Cort GB75 soundwise, so took it back the next day (refunded no problem). Financially my wife and I are comfortable with a bit of cash each month to squander, I could probably afford to drop £1-2k on a bass on 0% finance for 12 months with no massive detriment to our monthly finances, but i'd rather we spent the cash on dining out and family time.
13. I played a Stingray 5 with no battery. It still sounded fantastic.
14.
I appreciate that BC is probably not representative of the average bassist, the very fact we frequent a bass forum tends to an interest in the instrument beyond simply banging out a few tunes with some mates at the weekend... but I still find it surprising that only 5% of us have just the one bass. I would imagine that there are far far more people out there in the real world with just one bass than there are with even two?
This is a very relevant point. Those who are more 'gear orientated' are likely to hang out on a forum about basses, rather than music (irrelevant of instrument). Some bassists (and by that I mean people that own a bass whether or not they play it) have a cheapo Squier/Ibanez/Yamaha and don't really know much else about them.
15. Only defret if you never intend to sell as it will be worth even less than it is now otherwise. Nb I'd pay £400 for that configuration if I was in the market currently.
16. I was sat front left in my own. I asked if he'd ever got so far into a loop and wondered how to escape.
17. I went for white with black stripes.
18. I'll be there too. Look for a moody looking tall guy. I would wear my BC polo shirt but I can't be bothered to iron it.
19.
They're very careful in the shop. Only the staff are allowed to take and return basses to their hangers, plus they're always wiped down with a cloth once you've finished dribbling on them.
I can confirm part 2 of this. I was most offended ! Regarding part 1, i've never been told off for getting a bass down but consider myself considerably cautious when doing so. I've also been going there since it opened so i'd like to think people know i'm not headstock banger.
20. To produce some really indepth videos will be very time consuming and a pain - remember it is a shop that is open 6 days a week. They can hardly lock the doors to avoid interruptions. I think improved sound quality and more typical playing would be enough.
21. I can see these flopping massively and being discontinued fairly quickly. Everyone remembers the Gamechanger ? Right ? Oh.
22.
Just had another look at this... Is that actually a new scratchplate; or just the original in a slightly funny light that makes it look anodised?
It's not my Strat - that's just a similar one on Google with a gold pickguard.
23. I may get get an annodized gold pickguard for it... even more lush:
24. I've just done more research, this is in fact a 54RI not a 57RI according to http://freespace.virgin.net/john.blackman4/50s.htm.
25. My Dad is somewhat of a Stratoholic and has 4 US Strats and 4 Jap. The Japs are all for sale in a local store but not getting anywhere (prices a bit high in my opinion). There are 2 mid 80s Contemporary Series (1 x Fiesta red, 1 x sunburst) with Schaller locking tremolos, and also a standard Sunburst with 2 x P90 pickups (modded). There's also a more traditional mid-90s 1957 reissue (2 tone sunburst, maple neck). I've persuaded him he won't miss the 57 RI and to give it to me (more of a long term loan, i'd give it back if I didn't want it anymore). I've had a few guitars over time but never really felt any affinity with them to spend a lot of time learning, this one I hope will inspire me to actually learn to play properly.
