1. Thanks for all the info chaps. I've found an EMG MMTW on Thomann for £65 which is pretty good I think. plus I can use a 3 way switch which is what I wanted. I've ad a quote from Jaydee for routing too which is very reasonable
2.
All you need.
I've been thinking of getting an anodised gold plate for my Precision and this has convinced me to.
3. I looked last night, i'm quite sure there were indeed power connection wires, and this schematic seems to back this up: http://www.warwick.d...ck.de/Technical PDF/Scematic/PS-AS/PS_Corvette_Activ_60003.pdf The MEC MM ones are all passive so that rules them out (as well as being over priced). EMG seem to do a few MM pickups but only those that link to their own preamp ?
4. Well 3below im not sure, i expected just passive pickups with a preamp but was going on what Warwick say. If not active pickups the world is my oyster.
5. I'm happy to use an active pickup, just not sure what there other than EMG.
6. Would a Mark Hoppus bass pickguard fit? If so try ordering from Fender UK.
7. I'm going to upgrade my Corvette which is currently J/J with active MEC pickups. I want to replace the bridge pickup with an MM style humbucker but also retain the ability to have it as single coil via a switch (like a $$). Can anyone advise which pickups would work here? Do i need an active replacement?! I've looked at EMG, Seymour Duncan and Aguilar but they all look the same. Cheers
8. I'm sure Leo Fender made the original Precision headstock bigger to get around the 5th fret deadspot (it's around 6 now) and was surprised nobody complained about it.
9. I think the only solution is to change the mass of the bass. Prove this by clamping on something (FatFinger) or a G-clamp, but this generally just moves the deadspot a fret or two. Or just hold your head stock against a wall when playing (or corner of a door frame) and instant no dead spots AND extra sustain. Perfectly practical for gigging too.
10.
Why is she going to kill you? Have you seriously compromised the household cashflow for the month? If she's going to kill you just because you've bought a bass then to be honest the fact a bass is coming into the house is the least of your worries.
This.
11. I started in 2000 when after watching Metallica DVDs at my mates house whilst skiving off college. I bought a guitar and of course learnt lots of heavy metal riffs, then decided I liked the bass playing on Cunning Stunts (Jason Newsted's Bass Doodle, to be exact) and bought a Squier Bronco just to learn that. It all went from there, I play guitar too, but not much and certainly nothing above the 12th fret !
12. Why does it have to be neck through ? Taking that out of the equation allows for so many more options.
13. I played a dep gig for an indie/rock band a few years ago (all pretty easy stuff) I got a few compliments at the end from some p*ssed up punters. It was nice to hear, but i'd have preferred compliments on something I actually had to put effort in to. Last year, my band played Sir Duke at a gig, me and the keys player totally nailed the horn breaks, any compliments ?!?! NOTHING !! I am not at all bitter.
14. I think people smell desperation to sell and chance it with a low offer. I bet it works sometimes.
15.
Why is it all stingray copies and sterling subs have the odd Bridge. Are the smaller bridges super hard to aquire? The retrovibe basses have it and some Chinese aliexpress basses, although the one I saw was on a chickenbacker, not a ray copy. So confused.
They appear to be 'copies' of the original Stingray bridge that had the mutes and was phased out around 1996. However they just have a massive gap between the saddles and end of the bridge and look awful. It'd probably be possible to saw it shorter if you could clean it up well and somehow touch up the missing chrome. There must be one maker of these bridges that supply cheapo bass makers worldwide and if so, I bet Sterling SUBs use them too. It's the main thing that puts me off any Stingray copies.
16. Passive? The 5 string looks suspiciously like the Vintage EST.
17. Very unusual to see a 55-02 with open poled pickups. I like it very much.
18. I had a 1999 MIM Fender Jazz which I upgraded with Nordstrand NJ4 pickups which helped with a weak sound, but I sold it on anyway. Then 2 years ago I got my Lakland 55-60 and every other bass i've had since has been inferior. It's been gigged and has always excelled. The number of sounds available mean it always finds a way of sound amazing. I can see a 4 string Fender Jazz in my future (one with a big black F logo), but i'm sick of sunburst.
19. Tight spacing at the nut. I tried a Thumb 5 I'd been lusting over for a few weeks amd it felt so uncomfortable.
20. I'm not a fan at all. Why the change ? Did Fender start getting funny about it ? For me, Sandbergs are about those 2 classic shapes with modern features (e.g. 5 string, active EQ etc).
21. Whatever bass I picked up that day into the Zoom B3 (generally used as a tuner / mute switch) and then into the amp totally flat.
22. No, phase switch off. It's more linked to the large gap between the pickups.
23. Solid as a rock, heavy and brutish but some great sounds. I found I only ever used mine one pickup at a time though, it sounded too 'hollow' with both on at once for me.
24.
Hmm nah. I want a Ricky (Fireglo), a Precision and a Stingray. The Overwater is fantastic, but doesn't have the strong tonal characters of the others I want. Realistically, I won't be getting any of them because I won't have significant disposable income this year , Amp wise ? Been happy with the ABM for years...
So it's been almost exactly 4 years since this post and since then i've been through 10 basses (of which 4 remain) and bought a new amp. I am happy with nearly all of my basses currently and know the Lakland and Fender won't budge. I am going to sell the Spector soon though as despite efforts, 6 strings don't work for me (it took me 2 of them to realise). I do still want a Stingray (a Sterling SUB will do), but not as phased about the Rick.
