1. I played a dep gig for an indie/rock band a few years ago (all pretty easy stuff) I got a few compliments at the end from some p*ssed up punters. It was nice to hear, but i'd have preferred compliments on something I actually had to put effort in to. Last year, my band played Sir Duke at a gig, me and the keys player totally nailed the horn breaks, any compliments ?!?! NOTHING !! I am not at all bitter.
2. I think people smell desperation to sell and chance it with a low offer. I bet it works sometimes.
3.
Why is it all stingray copies and sterling subs have the odd Bridge. Are the smaller bridges super hard to aquire? The retrovibe basses have it and some Chinese aliexpress basses, although the one I saw was on a chickenbacker, not a ray copy. So confused.
They appear to be 'copies' of the original Stingray bridge that had the mutes and was phased out around 1996. However they just have a massive gap between the saddles and end of the bridge and look awful. It'd probably be possible to saw it shorter if you could clean it up well and somehow touch up the missing chrome. There must be one maker of these bridges that supply cheapo bass makers worldwide and if so, I bet Sterling SUBs use them too. It's the main thing that puts me off any Stingray copies.
4. Passive? The 5 string looks suspiciously like the Vintage EST.
5. Very unusual to see a 55-02 with open poled pickups. I like it very much.
6. I had a 1999 MIM Fender Jazz which I upgraded with Nordstrand NJ4 pickups which helped with a weak sound, but I sold it on anyway. Then 2 years ago I got my Lakland 55-60 and every other bass i've had since has been inferior. It's been gigged and has always excelled. The number of sounds available mean it always finds a way of sound amazing. I can see a 4 string Fender Jazz in my future (one with a big black F logo), but i'm sick of sunburst.
7. Tight spacing at the nut. I tried a Thumb 5 I'd been lusting over for a few weeks amd it felt so uncomfortable.
8. I'm not a fan at all. Why the change ? Did Fender start getting funny about it ? For me, Sandbergs are about those 2 classic shapes with modern features (e.g. 5 string, active EQ etc).
9. Whatever bass I picked up that day into the Zoom B3 (generally used as a tuner / mute switch) and then into the amp totally flat.
10. No, phase switch off. It's more linked to the large gap between the pickups.
11. Solid as a rock, heavy and brutish but some great sounds. I found I only ever used mine one pickup at a time though, it sounded too 'hollow' with both on at once for me.
12.
Hmm nah. I want a Ricky (Fireglo), a Precision and a Stingray. The Overwater is fantastic, but doesn't have the strong tonal characters of the others I want. Realistically, I won't be getting any of them because I won't have significant disposable income this year , Amp wise ? Been happy with the ABM for years...
So it's been almost exactly 4 years since this post and since then i've been through 10 basses (of which 4 remain) and bought a new amp. I am happy with nearly all of my basses currently and know the Lakland and Fender won't budge. I am going to sell the Spector soon though as despite efforts, 6 strings don't work for me (it took me 2 of them to realise). I do still want a Stingray (a Sterling SUB will do), but not as phased about the Rick.
13.
You don't hear that catchphrase much anymore?
Now then now then.
14. Shop trade ins are always bad value and shopa can be very keen to get people to do so as they can make money on both the bass they've sold you AND the one you traded in. It relies on your impatience and dissatisfaction with your current gear. Dont give in!
15. I have a GenzBenz rig so his usually sound similar to mine.
16. Ed Friedland is the best reviewer out there by far. The reviews are always clear and not showing off.
17. The Lakin was pleasing for me too, but not a lot more than my MIM Fender already is. Disappointed with the Thumb, string spacing too tight for someone used to a Lakland.
18. Buy something !?! No, I took a bass in for commission sale.
19. Great pics, I just happened to be there on the day as the others and recognised Bluejay .
20. This is a particularly annoying example I found recently; SPB-3 Quarter Pound for P-Bass: http://youtu.be/XHUySLAjp0g
21. Designer basses, like designer goods are by no means more fit for purpose than 'common' goods but satisfy those with a high degree of disposable income who want the elite items.
22. I hope not, those reviews were awful and the authors annoying.
23. My main bass is a 5 but I play some 4's too. I feel limited in terms of notes on the 4's but conversely more comfortable. I have a 6 too that I play the least, I lack the dedication to learn it properly and probably sell it for something 'easier' that I'll use.
24. Without the Made in USA in the headstock I'd have thought it was a Squier. However, I did not play or plug it in, so this is not the most comprehensive review.
