1. It seems to suggest the cabinet design is less much important than the quality of the speaker and an interesting potential for upgrading 'cheap' cabs.
2. A reasonable factor in the military using valves still is they are much more resilient to EMP than solid state is.
3. Under the control plate at the back (just a few screws). That's a very early and rare model (please don't mistake that as it being worth thousands), very nice - you have a great bass there.
4. I'm going at the end of the month.. hopefully returning with a Reidmar with at least one cab .
5. I can't see valves going anywhere - they're still cheap to produce and don't require any hard to source materials. Neodymium on the other hand does seem to be worse off - it's more the price of material than it's scarcity. I read that China seem to be limiting supply purposely to drive up prices.
6. It's the beginning of Skynet.
7. I had one and the signal is taken from the preamp output rather than power stage - so you can turn the master volume down and retain the DI.
8. After more research the Reidmar is currently top of the list... probably with one Classic cab for now. The Shuttle 6 entices me with it's hybrid valve preamp but I know I can emulate that through a pedal if required. The EBS setup just looks so portable and i've seen a lot more positives about EBS than GB.
9.
Just because a cab is looked to be designed horizontal doesnt mean you cant stack it vertical.
Except if the head overhangs it by 3 inches each side... and won't sit still ! I'm not a fan of Mark Bass, unfortunately. Too, erm... orange. I think current favourite is the Shuttle 6.0 Reidmar is a close 2nd with my reservation being on the upper limit of 250w - will than be enough into 8ohms ? I've played with the Shuttles all day at Bass Day 2008 so am fairly familiar with them.
10.
If it were me, with your budget I'd keep your existing ABM head for now and buy a Barefaced cab.
My ABM is the wide version (same width as ABM900) so a normal 210 cab has to be horizontal rather than vertical meaning a larger footprint, I prefer the idea of a cab being on it's side and thus taller (i'm 6ft 2 so higher is better).
11. Thanks for the input so far. It's unlikely to be anything but pub gigs to be honest - not looking for an ear crushing mega-rig. If it can match my ABM's performance in volume i'm happy.
12. Gigged my Ashdown rig last night and it dawned on me that it's too cumbersome and heavy compared to some more modern offerings. It's a 300w Ashdown ABM (13KG) into a single 250w 8ohm cab (28KG). I have a budget of ~£600 (maybe a bit more if I trade the head in) - here are my options: Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0/6.0 + GB 210T-XB3 TC Electronic BH500 + BC210 EBS Reidmar + Classic 112 cab I'm fairly inexperienced with rigs compared to instruments and the differences between them (stereotypical ones that is) I am unfamiliar with so would be interested if anyone could add the experiences of them
13. Mayones Jabba http://www.mayones.com/en/katalog/jabba .
14. Vintage V4 will sound pretty close to a normal Precision bass sound so as long as that's what you're looking for I think you'll be fine.
15. I think that serial makes it August 2000. My 2002 Venus 5 started 02 and was from 2002.
16. The reports about this amp are all good, this might be the rig for me after 6 years of Ashdown (and no fires ). My ABM is perfectly serviceable and loud enough but it's size is becoming a pain. Tried a Reidmar in Birmingham PMT through 2 1x12 cabs and it was a wonder to behold, didn't even get it above the first notch of the volume control before it was too much for close proximity.
17.
Not a Sandberg any longer. Swapped for a sand bag at Birmingham - I saw WoT that evil Machines was up to.
Teehee.
18. When I was 17-18 at college my mate had a guitar (ESP Explorer thing like James Hetfield, but a cheap one) and I thought it was very cool. Also I was getting into heavy metal at the time so my Dad bought me a Vintage VP6 (Yamaha Pacifica style) from a local shop for £110 (slight cosmetic damage, didn't bother me). Also got myself a 20w amp and a distortion pedal to go with it. I went through a few guitars, the best guitar being an Aria 7 string with flloyd rose tremolo that was an utter nightmare to set up but worked well. Should never have sold it . After about 6 months of guitar I decided I wanted a bass too (from watching Metallica Cunning Stunts, Jason Newstead's bass solo !). Went back to the same shop my Vintage came from and sized up the options (knowing NOTHING at all). I went for the cheapest (as will be no surprise for people that know me) which was a Squier Bronco in Torino Red. 9 years (and 15 basses have passed through) later i'm where I am now, and still have the same Vintage VP6 in my rack ! It's actually a pretty damned good guitar. My Dad plays guitar and gets through more gear than me, so I regularly get chance to try out new stuff (someone elses GAS is satisfying too).
19.
Just got off the phone.. it *is* still at the Birmingham hub. No explanation, it should be here tomorrow.
I'll give it the once over and let you know what it's like.
20. Waiting for further input from other moderators, but it looks like the most effective thing to do would be to open a subforum and if it gets really popular we can always migrate it to a dedicated site.
21. A subforum would be easier for us to moderate, and also categorise. It uses practically no more server space to create a subforum.
22. I played a Road Worn P the other day in PMT Birmingham, it was an absolute corker but was also £950. The same model P without the relicing was £550 or so... that's an expensive relic job.
23. I think a subforum that just caters for members here would be preferable to opening the gates to all (personal, not official opinion). I play guitar myself too and wouldn't mind reading through a few threads where I know the content will not be "who is better slash or hendrix LOL !!11"
24. Tell us or I will dispatch a snatch squad to extract it from you.
