1. Here's a sound sample I did a few weeks ago, it's quite basic but should give you the answers you're looking for. I think it starts with neck pickup then goes both, and bridge, all EQ flat. I don't think it sounds much like a traditional Jazz bass, it's far too hifi and you can't really get a passive style tone from it, but the clarity of tone is exactly what I got from my Progress (which I traded in for this and a G&L L2000). The EQ is very powerful for a 9v preamp (dare I say too much ?) and only minor adjustments can be made before it becomes overpowering. The centres for the treble pot and the treble boost switch are different so this gives a few more options. 2.
Why would it damage the tweeters? Would it be any different from DIing out a guitar head into a PA system (like is done at larger gigs)?
Because a bass cab with tweeters has a crossover set expecting mostly low frequencies. The crossover's job is to send higher frequencies to the tweeter, if all the power sent to the cab is high frequency (such as from a guitar head) then not much goes to the actual speaker cones, this will easily fry a tweeter.
3. The brand new D'Addarios (feel like EXLs) I got on my G&L when I bought it went really dull after just one practice session which was disappointing. Usually they're my preferred brand but I might give these Elixirs a chance if they'll maintain their tone more consistantly.
4. It'd work, but i'm not optimistic about you clipping the head to death. It could easily generate too much distortion which isn't good for your speakers from an underpowered amp.
5. Yeah, it was fairly predictable but I think it was more about letting people know the place exists. Pretty much everyone on this forum knows about it and I expect A LOT have been there - the article wasn't for our benefit really. Some of the time the BGM articles feel a bit behind the times - they're just getting excited about fanned fret systems when they've been available in the UK for quite some time now.
6. I can understand Ashdown expanding their range to try and compete in the lightweight market - but these things look pretty naff. Where's that awesome vintage look ?! They've shoved a VU meter in because it's their signature thing but it looks a bit out of place with the rest of the design. I like Ashdown for their classic appearances but this isn't really them, for me.
7. It's out today isn't it ? Should be in my porch when I get home if so .
8. Personally i'd cut the bridge pickup off, get it sounding like a P bass .
9. If you play bass already then guitar isn't that hard to pick up, you have to think in terms of chords rather than single notes though. I started on guitar then played some bass too, eventually dropped the guitar (still have it though). I just didn't find it as gratifying. With some basic knowledge you could easily knock something up to support the basslines.
10. I agree, i'd never heard of them when their Birmingham store opened. It's nowhere near anywhere and parking is dreadful, I don't expect to see the place there in 2 years time.
11.
I am seriously contemplating a Sanberg basic Ken Taylor 4 at the moment, but nowhere within a couple of hours drive seems to stock them.
Have you phoned PMT Birmingham ? They usually have a load of Sandbergs in, i've definitely some Basics there in the past.
12. That's a good price assuming it's not totally knackered. I had one and with a 210 extension cab it was capable of smallish gigs no problem. On it's own it might struggle - but if you just want a practice amp or you don't play in a loud band it's perfect.
13. My turn to chip in ! My brand new L-2000 Tribute Carved Top. I must say - it is a revelation, it sounds like lots of basses i've owned, but none of them have been able to do more than one thing. This does everything. I got it from Bass Direct a few weeks ago after being curious and asking Mark to get one of these Carved Tops in. When I got there it hadn't turned up, so I played a Walnut Stain one instead which was awesome. I waited around 6 hours (it's not like there was nothing to look at!) and the courier came, got it out the box and decided there and then it was coming home. It's first gig coming up this Saturday .
14. Went to that shop in 2005, it was full of budget junk. Their website doesn't lead me to think that has changed.
15. Ok checked both out - neither sound like one to me ! I think solo tracks are required with a few more playing dynamics prevalent. How are the EQ's set ?
16. Hold the answer till tomorrow at least ! I'll give it a try tonight when I get home.
17. I nearly liked it until I saw the weird top horn plus the lower cutaway looks a bit extreme. Thomann has the price for the 4 string at £527, that means it's going to compete with Tanglewaters, Sterling by EBMM, G&L Tributes etc. Not sure if it'll be a big success based on the looks, but the tonal options should be pretty good.
18. Interesting, sounds a lot like the Overwater/Tanglewood team up. Are there any pics yet ?
19. Precision pickup is a split single coil near the neck, a Stingray has a humbucker near the bridge. i don't believe any amount of EQ wizardy can make either sound like the other.
20.
Anyway, it's a bit of a ridiculous statement for you to make... loads of people own Fenders... does that mean nobody can review a Fender?
It may not use the 'e' word but surely that's what it is irrelevant of any financial benefit to either party ? How many Fender users are on the Fender website ? http://www.gbguitars.co.uk/gb_demos.asp My point, is that the review is not what I consider impartial, I don't believe for one minute that Stuart pays full price for the instruments compared to if me or you ordered the same spec.

Yo..
ive heard good things about this forum
It's all lies.
22.
Who at BGM is endorsed? Hasn't Stu Clayton just got an endorsement from Zon.. and maybe TC? Not sure about any of the others?
I never said who it was . But to answer your question specifically have a look here. I assume the info is still current.
23.
You want John McCoy to come round and sit on you?
Ah yes, he was another one who had a cringeworthy advert. "My Vintage ICON bass is f***ing incredible. It feels so natural, like I've been playing it for years!"
24. The more interviews I see with Jeff Berlin the more I think he's an opinionated arrogant fool.
