1. +1 for e bay. I bought my daughter a late 60s Olympic jazz kit in orange sparkle for around 120 quid. Got cymbals used from some drummer friends and we were sorted. I feel fairly sure I could get most of my money back should I sell it on.
2. Gentleman Tim & The Contenders will be back at the Round Midnight Bar, 13 Liverpool Rd, London N1 0RW this Friday. We are on at 9pm and we'll be playing three sets of Chicago blues and West Coast swing til the midnight hour. Entry is free. Hope you can make it - if you do, come and say Hi! Paul
3. I was hoping to attend but alas, it's not to be. And now I shall also miss Jack & Sylvia appearing as Noah & Nelly! Hope it's a great night!
4. A fiftieth birthday party in a hotel in central London which went well. No vomit, electricution, fight scenes, sound limiters or idiots. Boring really when compared to the various disasters above. Perhaps it's my turn next?
5. I have a different set of aches and pains as I have plantaar fasciitis in my feet. Standing up playing DB for 3 hours is not helping it and I shall be returning to the Doc ASAP. I also need to face up to being a couple of stone over weight and although v busy and always on the go, I live a fairly sedentary life. I think the aches and pains are starting to push my good intentions towards action.
6. Happiness here too. Great bunch of guys, like the material, appreciative crowds but, for me, the best bit is that I don't have to get the gigs. This is always the part I've struggled with in previous bands, both in terms of getting enough time to do it well and the success factor. Our frontman does all of this and we have more gigs in good places than I know what to do with. Oh yes.....and when I can't do a gig, he sorts out a dep! Long may this all continue!
7. Nice one Paul, hope it becomes a regular for you.
8. My Genz Benz class D amp has a switch on the back to select either US or Euro voltage.
9. Gentleman Tim & The Contenders return to The Two Brewers, High Street, Rochester, Kent this Thursday. Free entry for a 9 pm kick off. Come on down and say Hi. PTB
10. I loved it, great to see such good players interacting so well & really enjoying it. Loved the move to a shuffle and the best bass faces were right after that IMO. Thanks for posting WoT.
11. I have the same rig too although 98% of my gigs are on double bass these days. I think it sounds great and I certainly don't hear any "wallow" or over-active limiting, even when I play slab. Each to his own I guess.
12. I don't follow your logic. I've had uncomfortable 4s and comfortable 5s. Give me my light & ergonomic MTD 535 over my old 78 Stingray which was so heavy, it gave me neck & back ache.
13. The LPB '65 for me please. It looks the best, it's my YoB and based on your description, I'd like its sound too. A kind man loaned me a '62 Jazz for a few months some years ago and I still miss it.
14. I really like mine. I use it mostly for double bass but it sounds great with bass guitar too, warm and clean. It has been completely reliable through around 150gigs to date. I recently added the matching 1x12 NY cab & wish I'd done this much sooner.
15. I'm just down the road from Purley but I'm rehearsing tomorrow night. If I finish early, I'll try & drop by. If not, hope it goes well!
16. I personally wouldn't describe G-K or MarkBass as old school. I would suggest a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 which is old school to my ears. Have a look for Ed Friedland's video review on YouTube & see if it's what you are looking for.
17. I use my SL900 with an old MarkBass 3x10 from the days before they had yellow cones. I think it sounds great and it's light enough for me to carry. I've also tried it with some Vanderkley cabs at bass direct when I bought it & that was very impressive but expensive. We on BC can share our experiences but you really need to hear the rig for yourself. I'm on the mobile so I can't tell exactly where you are but you need to find somewhere to try some things out. Are you near enough to Carlisle and the Overwater shop? Are there any Scottish BCers who can let you hear their rigs?
18.
Voice Recorder. The mic in my HTC Desire craps out at high volumes but is useful as a notebook.
Thanks Bremen. I will experiment!
19. Interesting to see folk using their iPhone for this. I've just got an HTC One which has 20g on board storage plus 28g cloud which would seem ideal for this. Is there an Android app that I could use for recording?
20. Like you Clarky, I move to a more perpendicular position for quick passages. However, when doing so, I prefer to play nearer the bridge than you do as I find the strings too floppy up over the fingerboard which means I can't get the notes to speak quickly. It sounds fine to me and that's what matters at the end of the day.
21. Bump for Dorking tonight! Also, my apologies - I've noticed the link in my original post takes you to completely the wrong place! For anyone with a Sat Nav, it's RH4 1BU.
22. Thanks for the kind words Clarky. Good to see you & Bluejay last night. Next stop, Islington!
23. Excellent - see you there. :-)
24. Aw shucks guys! The rest of the carriage on the 17:24 to Dorking are wondering why I'm blushing! I can confirm that both Mr B & Clarky are great guys too. It's good to be part of BC isn't it!
