I meant to add...... Was good to see Paul who some of you will know as house drummer for our South East Bass Bashes. Also, we got the promise of more gigs there next year. Fingers crossed.
-
That's two more than we got! :-)

Thanks for your good wishes Bluejay! Our break is not deliberate but we have no other gigs in the diary for 2012 and we're all busy boys so it may be a while before there are more. I shall be back at George IV next Friday with my main band so can't complain. Perhaps you can make that one? I must remember to post that gig on BC too.

I recommend the Ed Friedland review on You Tube. There's several threads on Talkbass about it too.

I'm very happy with mine. It's not neutral but warm and full sounding. My D I is quiet & so are my pots. I use it with an old Mark Bass 3x10 cab and always have volume to spare.

A good point, it would help if I said we were at George IV, Chiswick High Rd! Thanks & enjoy Paco!

Sorry for the short notice but it's your last chance to see us this year! We play blues, soul & funky bits so come on down & shake your booty etc. We are on at 9 and it is completely free. What more could you ask for? Paul PS - please come & say hi !
Another bass for the collection ?
Like your Overwater, perhaps? I'm sorely tempted. Hmmm.......

I've just done the maths & it's 25 years this yr. I should celebrate! I wonder how best to do that!?

A fun weekend for me, two gigs on double bass with the blues / swing band. Friday night at Ain't Nothin But The Blues in Soho. A good reaction from an enthusiastic crowd. I DI'd into the venue's PA from my B-Band Statement mixer/preamp box and stood just under the FOH. It's a packed venue and the house amp is a heavy combo that's always locked away in the basement. I got fed up trying to get it upstairs & through the crowd. Taking my own amp is a no go as you can't park near the venue. It's about the fourth time I've DI'd and got the best sound yet with just a bit of mid cut and the 100hz cut button in. Last night, we played a wedding in Herts and were well looked after. Used my Mark Bass combo and was very happy with the sound. We played great until the sound limiter cut us off. This was one that I hadn't seen before. It seemed to have a small orange light that flashed occasionally but gave no warning as to when the power would go off. This happened about 3 times and the drummer and I just kept grooving until power was restored. Once the guitar and harp amps were turned down enough, we were fine. I understand why they have these things but we really aren't a loud band and limiters need to give you some visual warning of what they're doing so you can play within their parameters. Ho hum......at least I didn't have a valve amp like the others - I understand the loss of power is unkind to the longevity of tubes.

Too far away for me but I remember attending something similar that Mo did during a bass day at ACM in Guildford some years back which was very enjoyable. I remember him as a humble guy & a great player with a wonderful fretless tone and some great stories. It'd be great if this could be videoed!

I've voted for up to 1000 as I only use one of my rigs at a time! Details in my signature below. Was the man who said 10k referring to the PA ? :-)

Most of my pub gigs are on upright (2500ish). If I am playing bass gtr, its generally the Sadowsky RV4 (say 1300?) or the Reverend 5L (no idea what it's worth!). I don't take my MTD or my Fretless to pub gigs simply because I tend not to be playing the sort of music they are best suited to in those venues.

Genz Benz Streamliner vs Shuttle - what is the difference?
PTB replied to Paul S's topic in Amps and Cabs
In a nutshell, yes. I think the Streamliner is less versatile but has more character/colour IMO. It sounds great with all my basses - bright modern ones and big fat sounding one, fretted & fretless too. I've tried it with a BF Compact in Happy Jack's bass den and it sounded great to me. I believe those BF cabs like some oomph so I agree 900w won't be too much. There's lots of good stuff on TalkBass about both amps. A guy called KJung has a lot of practical & useful stuff to say about the Streamliner. -
Genz Benz Streamliner vs Shuttle - what is the difference?
PTB replied to Paul S's topic in Amps and Cabs
May I recommend the following: Streamliner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-27szg61bw Shuttle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqancBS121M I have a Streamliner 900 - the extra 300w weren't much more money and I was aware that some of our favourite bass cabs are power-hungry. -
Choosing a Class D head with more than 500W at 4 ohms and no more than £700
PTB replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
I love my Streamliner 900 for bass guitar. I haven't tried it with upright but it will certainly tick your boxes tone wise & should have enough oomph for your Acme. I had G-K 700 before & much prefer the Streamliner in every way but especially tone wise. Happy hunting! -
You're a lucky man Harry, all three look fantastic!

BBC1 documentary 2235 tonight: Paul Simon's Graceland
PTB replied to cloudburst's topic in General Discussion
I'm late again. Hope this is on the iPlayer......... -
Yep, he's a huge influence for me. I get to play Memphis Soul Stew in one of my bands & love his version with King Curtis, great feel!

After having a few weeks off, I'm looking forward to being back on Double Bass with Gentleman Tim & The Contenders tonight. We'll be playing 3 sets of blues and swing from 9pm onwards at the Round Midnight Bar, 13 Liverpool Road, Islington, North London. Come on down and say Hi! Both my 5s are 35" scale and I use a 40, 60, 80, 100 set of D'Addario's - either XLs or ProSteels. I used to use the 130 B strings that came with them but Mark @ Bass Direct (yes, him again!) turned me onto a taper-core 125 from R Cocco. This has evened out the response and I'm sold on this now. On my 34" scale 4s, I use one gauge up for fretted (45 - 105) and one down for fretless (40-95). If I were to get a 34" scale 5, I'd use these plus the B string above. This, of course is pure speculation as I don't have one right now. YMMV, as they say.

For something a bit different to the blues-rock you mention, try some West Coast Blues. Hollywood Fats' "Rock this House" album is a good starting point along with stuff by James Harman, William Clarke, Kim Wilson & Rod Piazza. I play DB in a band that does a lot of this stuff and it's great fun to play. Sonny Boy Williamson is an old-school blues man who did some interesting songs that weren't all the usual 12 bar pattern. As has been said, blues covers a load of different styles and it's fun exploring.

Nice work Higgie, really enjoyed that. This is a track I've always wanted to have a go at....now I shall!
