3.
I'll be getting one of those sometime in the next week.
WOW! Thanks very much....

Reviews: http://louderthanwar.com/sad-lovers-giants-light-shines-1981-2017-album-review/ http://www.discussionsmagazine.com/2017/04/sad-lovers-giants-spaz-reviews-where.html?m=1 http://bigtakeover.com/recordings/sad-lovers-and-giants-where-the-light-shines-through-1981-2017-cherry-red-records The reviews seem surprisingly favourable. Is this a result of the internet? and publications wanting linkage? Historically the press have hated us. Does nobody give a bad review anymore?
5. I didn't buy anything in 2016! hang on I did - i bought a Fender CE300 Acoustic bass....that's not gear though really is it? - I did order something though....and got told today that it, at long last, is expected to land in the country next week...an EBMM USA Sterling 4HH RW Black with MH....oh and a custom 4ply green pearl pickguard.... After that I suspect the coffers will be empty for a while.
6.
What I've discovered is that it doesn't seem to matter how much of your audience is made up of skinny hipsters, only L, XL and XXL people seem to buy band T-shirts!
Don't gig in Italy then - they only seem to want S and M tees.....and most want to try them on (eeeewww) before they buy!!
7. We always sell all the CDs and vinyl we can take to gigs. Due to weight we don't take many - most of our gigs are fly aways on Easyjet/Ryan Air. We sell lots of t-shirts too but the punters always seem to want the sizes we have least of!
8. I tend to buy vinyl or CDs, mainly from Amazon.....I don't do downloads - I did buy a DL once, from iTunes, while in the departure lounge of an airport, to my phone, having no music to listen to on the plane and having forgotten my ipod.
9. Our guitarist has always used an Award Sessionette 75 whenever he can. Perfect balance between the clean channel (clean) and the dirty channel (beautiful distortion)...switchable by footswitch.
10.
Pretty sure you need to connect a Klark Technik DN9650 to the AES50 port of the Midas, and the 9650 needs to be loaded with either: A: a Dante card which can be connected to a computer running Dante Virtual Soundcard Or B: a MADI card which can be connected to a computer with something like an RME Madiface in between I'd start with asking the venue if they're happy to facilitate it, as it's a bit of extra faff and configuration for the guy behind the desk to worry about, when he's likely to already be dealing with tight changeovers and all the other complexities of a live show. If he's happy to do it, I'd approach a pro audio hire company local to the venue and enquire about the kit. Might have to do a bit of ringing around as it's quite specialist equipment and will probably only be carried by rental houses that predominantly use Midas consoles. If it looks like it'll all come together, I'd go in there with a well prepared template file in your DAW of choice, and have an extra person with you to operate the recording laptop, as there's every chance that the house guy might be pressed for time to check it's all good before your show starts. I'd also suggest either bringing along or asking the venue to supply ambient mics to be recorded along with the rest of your input list. These can be phase aligned with the rest of your mix and blended in to add the feel of something actually happening in a real space, and can be brought up at top and tail of tracks to give crowd noise etc.
Thank you very much for your advice. I have secured the loan FOR FREE of a DN9650 with a MADI network card AND an RME MADIface USB complete with 30m CAT5 - this will allow all the gear to be on stage and allow me to start recording at the start of the show and some BNC cable for the weekend. The owner is even cool with me taking it to Spain!!! And the venue are cool with it and have confirmed an open AES50 port on the Pro1 I've also managed to get hold of a 250Gb external SSD (USB3) (I do have internal SSD too but it's getting full) to collect all the audio on......we'll have a live album yet - you heard it here first folks! THANKS!
11. Thanks for the advice, chaps VERY helpful..... I have access to 2 828x machines (which I could piggyback and sync) for free so suspect the old fashioned record from the direct outs on the old analogue board will be the cheapest solution.. 2 828xs +PSUs and 16 XLR/TRS leads is quite a lot of extra hand luggage....but needs must
12.
Number of times I have been asked why I haven't got a Fender (in my entire bass-playing career) = Zero.
Ditto
13. I've made 2 Fender shaped basses that have bare headstocks....my surname is Gibson....hmmmmm - now that would be confusing.
14. We've decided we'd like a multitrack off the desk of one of our forthcoming gigs. The next gig is at a venue with a Soundcraft EH3 desk - this is old tech totally analogue so would need a fair bit of gear to get a multitrack from. The gig after that is at a venue with a Midas Pro1 desk. This is a digital mixer but I'm struggling to see how to get digital audio out of it. It seems to not have any optical connections but passes audio via ethernet. The Midas peripheral software (offline editor via network) only works on Mac/iPad. I only have a Windows 7 PC running Sonar Platinum and a MOTU 828X ( takes 16 inputs via ADAT optical)..... Other than taking a bundle of XLR/TRS cables and perhaps a 2nd 828X to take a multitrack via the analogue outs, does anyone have any advice (other than buy a Mac/iPad) to get digital multitrack off the desk??? I can't talk to the venue ( it's in Spain and the man in charge of the desk isn't a great English speaker).
15.
When someone comes up to you in the street and says 'are you that guy from..?'
Happened to me the other day, in Milan! although it went more: <pointing of finger> "Sad Lovers & Giants, basso!" To be fair we'd played a gig there the previous night but we were a good 20 minutes drive from the venue.
16.
Currently individual musicians can still take their instruments across borders, but they probably need a receipt dated before the start of this year. It looks like provenance and "passports" will ultimately be required there as well.
i am currently awaiting delivery of a Musicman US bass with a RW board....I play many gigs overseas....will I likely have a problem in the future? It was ordered in Nov last year and the original receipt for the deposit is dated as such.....however it is yet to be delivered.
17.
Why would anyone want independent distribution for physical product these days? Nowadays it's far easier to sell your records directly from your band's website or a site like Bandcamp, and you don't need to worry about half your stock disappearing never to be seen again.
We've distribution via Cherry Red at the moment. It's their money tied up in the physical product too. We get a statement and royalties every quarter ....we sell copy via our own outlets but effectively have to buy product from Cherry Red to do so.....
18. i recently purchased a Fender CE300 T Bucket acoustic bass (32" scale) and find I now do ALL my home practice on it. I have found that when I'm in a band situation, where I always use a 34", I am now having to make a conscious adjustment to my muscle memory to adapt back to the 34" scale....... So I am thinking that perhaps it might be an idea to swap my 32" acoustic out for a 34" acoustic..... I do love practicing/writing on acoustic rather than plug up a rig (too loud and a pita to setup) or playing an electric unplugged (too quiet). Apart from the Fender Kingman which I hate the look of, what other options are there for 34" acoustic bass guitars?
19. I have the 'original' 62 in 1 bass and a 'custom shop 62' in another.....I prefer the 'original' despite it being cheaper, it seems to have less 'boom' and more 'grit' Discussing the texture of sound on an internet forum isn't easy.
20. I'm in this thread as I am tempted by a 32" scale P.....but there don't seem to be many available. Since I bought my Fender CE300 T-Bucket acoustic bass (32" scale 42mm nut) I have been doing most of my practice on it. When I go to rehearsals with one of my 34" basses I find my muscle memory needs a conscious adjustment as my left hand is now used to the 32" neck... However, seeing as I am currently waiting for a EBMMUS Sterling to arrive and I already have another 4 34"ers, I think it'd be a better (cheaper?) idea to swap the acoustic out for a 34" acoustic....hmmmm
21. Our drummer is the ONLY member of the band to have been in every line up over the last 37years He doesn't have a drum kit. He has a kick pedal and some cymbals and stands and a tambourine to clip on the hi-hat..that's it. He only practices in rehearsals and gigs. He speeds up during rolls and often gets to the one a bit early...... He loves a knob joke or an arse joke.... We wouldn't swap him for anyone
22.
distributors which essentially meant that it was done by either Rough Trade or Red Rhino.
or Pinnacle or Jungle or...there were many back in the heyday - today there are several new ones
23. Sad Lovers and Giants are doing our stuff in Italy again this weekend: Traffic Roma Friday 31st March Serraglio Milano Saturday 1st April If any of you happen to be on a weekend away...no? I don't blame you
24. I have a Fender CE300 T Bucket acoustic bass.....it's great for noodling at home - I use it for writing mainly. I find it comfortable to play while seated. It wouldn't compete with even a single guitar if unamplified. Amplified, I find with the phosphor bronze strings there's just too much finger noise - probably my poor technique.
