1. Has anyone done their own nickel plating using a kit such as this? http://www.classic-plating.co.uk/index_files/Page799.htm I 'need' another Babicz nickel plated bridge. FCH don't make them anymore. I was thinking....if I took a chrome one and dismantled it and stripped the chrome plating and replated with nickel, would I get a useable result? The problem I see is that the Babicz FCH is made of an aluminium alloy so the classic plating Co's chrome stripper would be no good [http://www.classic-plating.co.uk/index_files/Page545.htm] but I could use their acid pickle which is included in the plating kit. Then I read I would need to use zincate before plating http://www.classic-plating.co.uk/index_files/Page653.htm Would it all fit back together once coated with say 25microns of nickel? Anyone tried this? Any success? Should I be looking at another solution?
2. drill a hole and then use a jeweller's fretsaw?
3. We play loud enough to be heard above the drum kit. Problem is when you get some neanderthal bashing hell out of a Ludwig kit in a fairly live room then significant volume is required to get a good mix.
4. My recently completed bitsa: Warmoth alder 'DinkyP' body finished in gloss black. Status Jazz neck Gotoh GBR640 nickel plated aluminium reverse wind tuners Babicz FCH nickel plated bridge - talking to FCH it seems this came from a prototype test run and there aren't anymore Fender Custom Shop 62 pickup CTS 250k pots .047uF paper in oil cap Q parts skull and cross bones black chrome knobs Switchcraft mono jack Fender nickel strap buttons with black felts Fender nickel string tree Generic chrome neck plate on black plastic pad - anyone know of any nickel plated neck plates (for consistency) ? [Edit - just found a nickel neckplate and nickel neck screws at Allparts so placed an order and this baby will have full nickel fittings before too long ] d'Addarrio Half round strings .100 - .045 According to my bathroom scales this weighs just over 5lbs - according to my kitchen scales 7lb 3oz All I can say is it is the lightest bass I have ever picked up - but sounds monstrous. Not yet fitted but sitting in a box at home: Fretfx green LED markers
5. I always get the strap that goes underneath. I don't bother with handle hole flaps and a cable pocket though....cable pocket? Isn't that what gig bags are for?
6. Don't you mean Marshall Astoria ? https://marshallamps.com/live-for-music/news/the-astoria-series/
7. there's this too http://www.bassmute.com/bassmute/bm_mainframe.html
8. There's a kit available from Allparts to add a mute to a Fender vintage bridge - needs the bridge cover, mind http://www.allparts....string-mute-kit and they have the parts for the Jaguar kit mentioned above http://www.allparts.uk.com/products/mute-rocker-plate-for-american-vintage-jaguar-genuine-fender
9. Have a word with your neighbours. Last week I was waiting for something via USPS from the states. The USPS tracker said it was delivered. The USPS number worked in Parcelforce's tracking albeit about 2 days after USPS said it was delivered, but it also said it was delivered. Anyway a couple of days later one of my neighbours knocked on the door with a parcel of bass bits (luckily the vendor had declared them as a 'gift' - result - so no customs to pay). Parcelforce had delivered 2 doors down.
10.
If Epiphone can't deliver, well... I can. Started out as a regular mid nineties cherry Epiphone Rivoli I. A lefty friend of mine wanted one, so I refurbished in a pelham blue-ish color, and the wiring and pickguard of an EB2D. Sounds humongous, and is I think a unique piece. Many manly tears were shed when trying to pry in the wiring harness (big CTS potmeters with the long shaft, many wires, small F hole)...
Why's it strung right handed?
11. lefty's look so wrong...this thread has made me very uncomfortable
12.
I like to watch performances like these
Only 3 strings? That's not normal is it?
13. I am fed up of having to take the plate off to tweak the truss rod. What's the safest way to enlarge the truss rod notch on a 4 ply pickguard so it won't need removing whenever the rod needs a tweak? By safe I mean it will look neat and symmetrical and making the mod won't split the guard.
14. I always use d'Addario half rounds 45-100 They're perfect for me.
15. I have been well and truly bitten by the bass building bug.... My last project was a Status jazz necked Warmoth DinkyP which some of you might have seen at the recent SE bass bash: My current project is a lined fretless PJ with aguilar pups, babicz bridge converting my green PJ which I put together back in 2011. Anyway I fancy making a new bass with MM pickups just for a change. Primarily coz they look good - not for the sound they make... So I'm looking to order another DinkyP body - I do like the ergonomics and light weight of these. I can't decide between a pair of MM pups (1 bridge and 1 neck) or a single in either the neck or bridge or the sweet spot (somewhere inbetween)..... Am undecided whether to leave it passive or active and if I go active which pre-amp to use. I will more than likely fit another Status jazz neck as I love playing the one I have. What do you suggest I do with the electronics (Pups & pre)...and why?
16.
Isn't this what this thread is about? I have feeler gauges, and would use them if I were setting up a bass for someone else, but I read this thread as being about "how accurate do you measure yours?"
yeah I suppose so...I started this thread because someone had joked in another thread that my action must be 'only' like 1mm at the 1st fret, as if that was uncommonly low....which of course it isn't. I was curious as to how high some people's action might be set as I couldn't even play a bass that had 1mm at the 1st - imagine what it's like at the 12th!!! So it wasn't so much how accurately it's set up but which measurements you employ that I was interested in. It seems the chap who feels 1mm at the 1st is low hasn't turned up to this thread.
17. Neither I wouldn't give either a second glance. They do nothing for me.
18. looks like the incredibly rare anti-gravity wall mounted version The best onstage sound I ever had was through a rig like this Congrats
19. It's over a ton now....in more ways than one.
20. I know I've done it several times before but today I just couldn't... hahaha
21. I recently acquired a lined fretless neck, brand new, from Warmoth. It's lovely: satin nitro finished maple with an ebony fingerboard.... Today was supposed to be the day it went on my PJ. Earler a swapped out the Gotoh201 bridge for a Babicz and the pickups for an Aguilar PJ set and stuck in the Kiogon loom I'd recently bought. I restrung just the A string on the frretted neck to see how the pickups sound...a vast improvement over the mismatched Fender original and a Allparts J. And then I spent the rest of the day trying to summon the bottle to start drilling holes in the new headstock to mount the set of GB640 tuners I have and the string tree. It's not like I haven't done this before. I have. Several times. But today I just couldn't get the bottle. I became paranoid that i would make a mistake, drill all the way through or just generally make a balls up of it.. I shall try again tomorrow. Does anyone else get filled with builder's dread?
22. Not the style I play with my band but I always loved this whole album primarily for the bass tone - I think it's the album that made me want to play bass!
