Fixed
whoops you are right. My brain is old and tired and I get confused sometimes. I try to only play J necks these days - hence that's the only one I got right. You know I looked at the widths I had quoted and thought - hmmm something's not quite right there... but posted anywway will edit correction.
Wow I have literally only owned 5 basses (three electric, one acoustic & one upright) since I began playing which is about 13 years (And that include the three Basses I own now)
I have owned a total of 4 basses in the 33 years I have been playing. I still own 3 of those.

My Kay P-bass was easily THE WORST bass in the world - bought new in 79/80 I think. It looked a bit like a 57 Fender insofar as it was sort of precision shaped with a 2 tone sunburst finish, a maple neckewith a white scratchplate. It weighed a ton and was impossible to setup - the action was always stupidly high and it suffered fret rattles and buzzes and deadspots all over. Did I say that it weighed a ton+ ? I think it was designed for Geoff Capes. Was sold as a 'beginner's bass' - I wonder how many beginners were put off by the impossibility of playing this heap of sh*t?

A standard precision neck is 1 5/8" wide at the nut A standard jazz neck is 1 1/2" wide at the nut. Some vintage precison necks are 1 3/4" wide at the nut.

I love that both my Warmoths have NO badges....they have prompted a fair few questions I used to feel conscious that my JV wears a Squier badge... I have only ever owned 2 things with a Fender badge on them...a strap (which was really uncomfortable) and a lead (which I really rather like)...

How do you 'notate' or write down your basslines?

I don't. -
JV Squire Precision £350 on London gumtree
Twigman replied to jaybass 70's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Hmmmmm You know I don't think that is original. I don't EVER remember seeing a black JV with a tort plate Can't see a black JV P listed on the JV register: http://www.21frets.c...JV_Registry.pdf EDIT: actually I can see 2..... HMmm then maybe it is real? I seem to remember when i bought mine (new) the 62 came in Olympic White or Fiesta red or 3 tone sunburst only -
is nobody gonna offer anything for April?

Didn't we all form bands in the first place so we could make lots of noise????

For that money, make your own Warmoth - exactly the way you want it. I did twice.
I'd get shorter screws for that one then.
smaller saddles too would be a good idea....only I can't find any that will fit exactly....

We rehearse in a smaller room than that....problem is often with a Ludwig kit....that mutha is LOUD! As a result we play quite loud - often with earplugs in - it gives a better mix than turning down and only being able to hear the kit.

For cheap I'd recommend Sanctuary Studios in Watford. http://sanctuaryartofsound.com/
The best option is to go for the Gotoh 201..
I have a Gotoh 201 on my P/J. i find a few things 'wrong' with it. The saddles are really fat which means that even when the saddles are as low as they can go my action is still pretty high, despite having shimmed the neck. As a result of having the saddles as low as they can go the threaded rods the saddles are adjusted with stick out a long way making the bridge have lots of sharp bits that puncture my hand. it really is uncomfortable to play.
-
I only have experience of 3 bridges. The fender BBOT, The Gotoh 201 and The Babicz My favourite by a million miles is the Babicz, not because it is an engineering masterpiece (IMHO it is though) but because there are no threaded rods to pierce holes in your hand when you are resting your hand on the bridge.

It has been less than a week and already the waiting is killing me....
Haaaaaaaaaa Sorry but I looked at a GT86 a few weeks ago and didn't think it was possible to get anything bigger than a very small briefcase in the boot.
Marshall 2 x 12 in boot of GT86 (not mine) -
Sad to see the choice is so limited....... I am itching to do this again......please, someone offer something up. I would if I could but record company copyright issues restrain me....
From what I've read, it sounds as though the KRKs accentuate the highs and lows at the expense of mids. I have a mate with KRKs, I'll check them out tonight.
that might explain why my mix of your song sounds boosted in the mids on other systems then? I have fallen foul of the KRK curse then..
-
Twigman - I've heard a lot of bad things about the KRKs, do your mixes seem to translate to other system well?
So far mostly yes - however the Sapere Aude mix I did for your competition seems to be far more mid heavy when played back through both my poxy office setup and through my home hifi than it sounded in my studio room through the KRKs. This is the first mix that has happened to though, others have translated to other systems as expected......

I love my KRK G2 Rokit RP6 monitors £329 per pair here: http://www.dv247.com/studio-equipment/krk-rokit-rp6-g2-active-studio-monitors-pair--68122
Given time I automate vocals, I never ever cut out the breathing altogether, it kills the feel for me, however if you compress the vocal to add punch and 'spit' as it were, you bring the level of the breathing right up, and the only way to really precisely control it is to automate pulling the input level into the compressor down for every breath. A track like this it would take about 20 minutes to do one vocal channel really well (you actually have to listen to every bit of every phrase in the song repeatedly to get every breath right).
That's what I did.....pulled the level down for each and every breath and used a slow curve envelope on the automation to bring each breath back to level... i also edited out that clang on the guitar after the Sapere Aude vocal bit where the strummed acoustic and 'normal' vocal refrain come back in.....It just sounded like it was timed poorly and superfluous...I heard it was still there in many of the mixes.
I left the acoustic in, but the eq had devastating amounts of cut in it.
Yes I eq'd out a lot of the bottom end of the acoustic particularly in the appeggiated parts - I suspect the player's thumb was a little heavy on the E string....
the snare was ducking the guitars
As I said above I tried this but found that I got too much 'pump' on the guitars so abandoned the idea.... I loved doing this - I can't wait to get cracking on next month's ....
I know this will cause some major abuse on here but i gigged last week using the headliners Orange bass terror. Have used them before so as soon as i saw it i though ''ohhhhhh bollocks''. To me they just sound like someone has put an angry bee in an empty ale can and stuck a micropohone next to the hole. Horrible things
One of these was provided as backline when we played in Berlin last November....could I get a decent sound out of it? Could I f***. Awful things IMHO

Mix H - which bizarrely seemed to have the most plays - perhaps as it was top of the list - I do hope not that many folk were put off by it thus not venturing to the better executed efforts further doen the page. I went for a wall of sound from the guitars which is probably why the mix sounds very mid heavy and muddy. One thing I did which I don't think others did was edit out all the breathing in the vocal...i thought that sounded horrible...but then perhaps the vocal sounds a little sterile as a result? I found the acoustic guitar in the bit after the intro to be really difficult to control. Without it the section sounded empty, with it it sounded too busy and had a tendancy to overload the meters. Yes, I did have a 'huge snare ring' I bussed all snares together and then whacked quite a lot of compression on it....this was in an effort to get the snare to cut through the mush of guitars - i bussed the guitars and considered for a while sidechaining the guitars to the snare but that put too much pump into the guitars.....I found it really tricky to get the drums anywhere but 'at the back' of the mix. I am really looking forward to the next one whatever that might be.....I am afraid I won't be able to provide any stems as our record company are somewhat traditional when it comes to copyright issues and to be honest my home demos are not the greatest performances in the world.....
