The hardware I want to do this to is aluminium to start with. I thought the chrome plating went straight on the aluminium.
It's not something I've done, but shouldn't muriatic acid strip the chrome and leave the nickel plate that's already on there?
Is there nickel under the chrome?
Is removing chrome plate really as easy as you suggest?
So Google tells me!!!

Plenty of bits are available with chrome plating. On my latest build I would prefer nickel plating. I want to use a Hipshot 3 string retainer on the headstock across the A D & G strings: and I have already got a Babicz full contact bridge: but they are both chrome plated. I was thinking that if I took the bridge to bits and bathed everything in 100% acetone for a few days to strip the chrome plating that I could then electroplate all the bits with nickel using something like this: http://www.gaterosplating.co.uk/Bright-Nickel-Plating-Kit.php I know it's a pricey way to go about it but if it was to work it would make all the difference.... Has anyone here tried home electroplating? What kind of results have you had? Is it harder than I think? Should I even think about doing it? Am I going to ruin all my bits? Thoughts?

JV - P How much? Maybe I should put mine up?
I think the one on the left is actually an original from 1962, like actually from 1962
I know and it looks like it has a 4ply. As does my 1984 JV62RI My point is JVs were supposed to be authentic reissues. How were they ever made with 3ply plates? That is such an obvious error. -
, I can't see any reference in the ad to it being a 3 or 4 though?
You can see from the picture -
Trust me, all of what you said is not true, you have been misinformed. Original Fenders ('59-'65) did not have a brown tort guard. They had a nitrate tort guard, more red, often referred to as pepperoni.
It surprises me that the original Fenders were red rather than brown - every one I've ever seen is brown rather than red (unless it's been replaced). I am 100% sure the 62 was 4 ply though. It is on every reissue Fender (as opposed to Squier - I am well aware of the CV having 3ply) have ever made and I am surprised that the Squier JV 62s ever came with a 3ply as that is such a basic error. Mine was definitely manufactured with a 4ply plate. The one in your pic in the left looks 4ply to me I can see a black line splitting the white. - or am I seeing things? -
I don't know what model you have, but the original guards are what they call red tort, if yours is the brown tort, then to my knowledge (Pretty good on JV's), its not original. If you have a later version though, it may be, I dont know much about the later models.
I have a Fiesta Red 62 JV serial JV80694 which I have owned from new. It is 100% original. it has a brown tort 4ply plate. The original 62 Fenders did too. The Japanese tried to make the 62JV as authentic a reissue as possible and my understanding is that all the 62 JVs had brown 4ply plates. The 62s are the ones with the rosewood boards - the 57s have maple boards. -
That one does have the Fender logo though, which are supposedly rarer than yours with the Squier logo. See one (or a pair) for sale here for £1200 also: http://basschat.co.u...azz%20precision
True but does that really make it double+ (??guessing??) the price (particularly with non-original scratchplate) ??? -
If that JV sells for that I shall eat my pants. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a742cb74a Edit: and the scratchplate does not look original to me - it's too red and only 3 ply Mine is browner and 4 ply and i know mines original coz I bought it new.
Now, if he was saying 'I find that some Musicman basses have really loud E and A strings and quiet/flat D and G stings' then I'd be agreeing.
Same would be true of Fenders IMHE
Kinda reminds me of a shop in Watford, a few years ago they used to have the walls filled with some pretty decent guitars and basses. Now they have one bass and about 10 guitars, all of which are pretty damn awful, apart from one ibanez, which is way overpriced. shame really, my lunch breaks used to be awesome in that place, so busy, now it's dead, I went for the first time to buy strings and found out that infact, that's pretty much all they sell..
, why can't the guy put his own name on the bass he made?
Do you think I should put 'Gibson' on the basses I make? I think someone might not like that either esp as they are Fenderalike basses
sounds great - was it fun?
Yeah it was fun in a somewhat stressful way. (some promoters have a lot to learn ) It is bizarre to be sat in an office one day and be playing a gig in foreign parts the next, to a load of punters who know all the words to the songs and are going mental in front of you.

My second Warmoth build - finished...with teething troubles
Twigman replied to Twigman's topic in Build Diaries
was it not worth fitting a decent preamp to your PJ to revive it?

Or getting a beefier bridge pickup?
Probably on both counts........ I just enjoyed the process of making the bass and wanted to do it all again. I am still going to change the bridge pup in the PJ for a humbucker (prob Nordy twin coil) and experiment with the wiring a bit - I read somewhere that putting a cap in series with the pup . I suspect it'll be out of action a while while I play with it.....and (excuse) now I love playing my Jazz neck I have to have another to play while i sort out the PJ's problems. I tried playing the JV precision again the other day and wonder how I managed with such a wide neck for so long. -

A couple of bits arrived this morning. -
If Fender stuck Jazz necks on Precision bodies I'd be more inclined to get one. That's why I built a Warmoth instead.
