1. Hi all, am after a recommendation for a place to take my bass for a good setup,am in the south london (Croydon) area. Have used a local shop that will remain nameless for a setup before and was less than impressed so am after some recommendations. Also having done a google search i found a place called the Mobile guitar workshop, has anyone used them? Thanks
2. Hi All, Went to play my Mustang bass yesterday, hadn't played it since about Monday (was playing my Jaguar bass), it has a little fret buzz where there previously was none, I am assuming climate change is to blame , there was some heavy rain a couple days ago and it has been fairly cold, there is a little buzz on the G string on about frets 1-4 , I am fairly sure the fretwork is ok as I had a setup done about a month ago and they checked the fretwork, I am assuming I need to add a little relief to the neck?
3.
Yes, I'm sure Fodera has done the market research to suggest that there will be some people who'll spend $4,000 on a well-built passive P or J. However, I cannot help but thinking there has to be a limit to what a brand / name does to persuade people to spend their money. http://www.notreble....classic-basses/ What are your thoughts? Greg
I agree, for the money I would expect more , they are asking 4k for a bass that has vvt passive electronics, truss rod access at the body end, a bolt on neck, no fancy tonewoods either on this just plain old Ash or Alder (nothing wrong with either of those woods but on a 4k bass you would expect more options) and then "Fodera builds in the control cavity to allow for modding it to a preamp in the future" , yeah because I really want to spend that kind of money to end up modding the bass in the future, not too mention the generic looks that bring to mind the Peavey Milestone basses and the Ibanez Expressionist bass
4.
ProSteels are one of our brightest sounding strings, we make many of our more popular gauges in short and medium scale sets in both steel and nickel plated steel. If you're still interested in trying some nickels from our range our NYXL Bass strings are the brightest nickel plated steel strings we manufacture.
thanks, i will definitely give the nyxl strings a try
5. maybe some Delano's =1&tx_smtdelano_pi1[series]=6&tx_smtdelano_pi1[strings]=5&tx_smtdelano_pi1[system]=45"]http://www.delano.de/products.html?&cHash=ddc58fffeb&tx_smtdelano_pi1[cat]=1&tx_smtdelano_pi1[series]=6&tx_smtdelano_pi1[strings]=5&tx_smtdelano_pi1[system]=45 =1&tx_smtdelano_pi1[series]=6&tx_smtdelano_pi1[strings]=5&tx_smtdelano_pi1[system]=98"]http://www.delano.de/products.html?&cHash=c7556b3fe5&tx_smtdelano_pi1[cat]=1&tx_smtdelano_pi1[series]=6&tx_smtdelano_pi1[strings]=5&tx_smtdelano_pi1[system]=98 they describe them as having "in your face stingray style grind"
6.
Wow £10-15 !!!! is at least £40 plus strings (if needed) where I am , I think I paid around £70 for my last setup
Also worth mentioning is that it is worth having a basic knowledge of setups and how to adjust truss rod etc , I have had setups done and more times than not the person doing the setup has setup my basses to "their" preference so it helps to be able to fine tune any work that has been done, my last setup I found they had adjusted the action higher than I like it and had loosened the truss rod more than I would have liked so I ended up tightening the truss rod slightly and dropping the action a little
7.
I think that UK Lefty, Lozz and I all use the same luthier, Terry Chapman of TJC Guitars. https://www.google.c...clIbcLRoBM0fNiw Generally costs around £10-15 depending on what you need to have done. Terry's a top bloke too - other than being a guitarist.
Wow £10-15 !!!! is at least £40 plus strings (if needed) where I am , I think I paid around £70 for my last setup
8. Thanks , will have a look into the pentatonic scale and will check out the video
9. Have very recently started playing in a 3 piece playing mainly Cream and Hendrix covers, our guitarist is covering the lead vocals and so wants to simplify his guitar parts a little, as a result he has wants me to take more of a lead bass/solo bass ala Jack Bruce kind of role during verses, thing is i have always been a root fifth octave kind of player so am after some pointers on becoming a more lead bass kind of player , maybe some pointers on some good melodic fills to use , suggestions appreciated , thanks
10. Oh man i hate that i missed this thread, would have loved to try a set of these, really good of Daddario to give the chance to try these even if i did miss out by finding this thread months too late
11.
What are the nickel strings you have on now?
I have Rotobass nickel plated strings on at the moment, they seem one of the better nickels i have tried so far
12.
Literally don't know what you want. What are these near sounding steel nickel strings? Pro Steels are really bright!
As i said i am sure it is a case of the strings not being the right match for the bass,i experienced this years ago with Roto steels sounding great on one bass and awful on another
13. Ok recieved the prosteels unfortunately i dont think these are gonna cut it, i know Daddario makes some great products and i am sure it is just a case of the strings being the wrong match accoustically for this bass, i found the treble to be only very slightly stronger than the nickels i already had on the bass and the tone if anything was a little on the polite side and lacking bite , wish i had gone for the xl nickels now, back to the drawing board
14. Hi, have decided to broaden my range to stainless steel strings as i think i may be more likely to get the aggressive tone i am after, how are Daddario pro steels for aggressive tone? Thanks
15.
I have to use steels , as I get horrible rashes when I use nickel. I find Rotosounds are very bright. In fact , if you want a brighter, more metallic sound, steels are your best bet everytime , in my opinion.
I have half been considering stainless steel , the things that have stopped me are the finger noise that comes with steel and the roughness of the strings, the roughness I can probably get used to but not a fan of the finger noise , perhaps I should just a get a set of steels and see if i can get used to this
16.
Depends what you mean by "aggressive" - if that means plenty of "clank" then Rotosound RS66 nickels will give you plenty of that - but slightly less than the SS ones. Better still, I think they're available in short-scale as well. I thought the Dunlops did a fair job, though I've only used them once.
I wouldn't say I am after clank, I tend to use light gauge strings and have worked on my technique to reduce the clank as I find clank comes at the expense of growl/grind and I guess growly/grindy tone is what I am after so growly/grindy highs rather than clean
17. Hi all, as per thread title i am after suggestions for aggressive sounding nickel strings,i am using nickel strings as i prefer the less abrasive feel of them compared to stainless steel strings but i am not totally opposed to ss strings if the tone is good enough to warrant their use. For reference this is for a dark sounding single pickup short scale bass, doesn't have to be strings specifically for short scale as i have successfully used long scale strings on other short scale basses many times in the past.
18. so sad to hear the news, another legend gone
19. Hi all,am after a good solderless wiring harness for my Squier Jaguar short scale bass and was wondering if anybody knew of a good one to use,i would like to avoid soldering as my soldering skills are abysmal, thanks for any suggestions
20. Not much to add other than I have seen them go for less than that price but having said that even at 39.99 it would be a bargain if it turned out to be an improvement on stock p pickup. Have not seen any demo videos however unless I am mistaken the Vintage Tony Butler Bass has Wilkinson pickups , I am sure I saw a demo of that bass on youtube a while back. If you do purchase this pickup please let me know how it sounds
21.
Black = Cold Both pickups are always on with that setup, is that what you want?
Thanks, yes that is what i am after. I have heard that series wiring will give me a fatter sound but what i would like to know is how will the resulting sound differ from the sound of the p pickup soloed? Will i have more highs than when i solo the p pickup due to the j pickup also being permanently on or will all the pickups being in series further reduce the highs due to the two coils of the p pickup plus the single coil of the j pickup all being in series ?
22. One more thing how do i tell which wires are hot and cold? The pickups at Seymour duncans and have black and white wires btw
