1.
Thought so, thanks for replying. It's my first active so in uncharted waters a bit. So is the general idea to balance boosting and cutting to get roughly the same overall level as flat or just season to taste and tweak the amp's gain to match?
I dont own an active Jazz but on my Ibanez I generally set eq etc on the amp and use the basses eq to fine tune the sound
 2. I would say that if you are able to visit the seller and try the bass then do that , otherwise I would say to tread carefully but if you can try the bass before you buy then you have nothing to lose
 3.
It is a horrible clip (which I guess helps explain why nobody has picked up on it). On my P-bass it sounds much more double bass like. I don't particularly care for his playing style (personal taste) but it was the only video I could find. I got into Rotosound Trubass strings from the recommendation of a friend I really rate as a player. Bar simply adjusting your tone, it's a cheaper option then buying a new bass, if you wish to experiment
The Trubass strings do get very close to the double bass sound
 4.
Thanks. Do any of the Cort Curbow basses have real wood bodies like the Tanglewood, or are they all Luthite and Ebonal like the Cort Curbows I see online?
I believe the Cort Curbows are all Luthite
 5.
This is, to my eyes, a really nice looking Tanglewood bass. So much better than the ones I see frequently in pawn shops. Is this one of the Cort-built Tanglewood basses? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tanglewood-Canyon-2_...=item2c5231e12b
Yes this is one of the Cort built Tanglewoods , this is based on the Cort Curbow (In fact they are so similar that many people call these basses Tanglewood Curbow)
 6.
Arthritis forces me away from my upright. I`d like the same sort of sound from, presumably, a bass guitar with some acoustic properties like a Godin or a Viellette. Any advice would be appreciated.
I would go for one of these if I was after a double bass sound http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eb_page09...p;series_id=210
 7.
Yes, it sounds like that unplugged too.
sounds like a duff string to me
 8.
That is indeed the one! You getting on with the Ibby?
I have traded it for a 5 string Ibanez as I wanted a low B , I wanted to stay with Ibanez as the SR900 played and sounded so good.
 9.
Thanks for that mate. Not a route I was thinking of really as I quite like my Precision's tone, but I could certainly consider it I guess.
Fair enough , if you like the tone then it makes more sense to get another bass , for a good , dark rock tone I would say that you can't beat a Thunderbird although they are a little on the pricey side. The Squier tele bass (or its Fender counterpart) is very dark sounding although more of an old school Jack bruce kind of rock tone.
 10.
Hello everyone, Bit of a weird one this. But I was wondering what you all would suggest when it comes to dark and powerful sounding basses for rock and stuff like that? I've had some nice basses in my time, but I've settled with a modest Highway 1 Precision which I adore, but I think it likes the darker tones of some other basses. So what's everyone's thoughts? Are Thunderbirds the daddy? How about the EP-3/0's? What about Ricks? Stuff you can pound out a line of death on? Kind of looking to see what might tickle my fancy as another bass in the future you see Look forward to reading your replies... Jamie
Maybe changing some hardware may achieve a similar result , A pickup swap for an overwound p bass pickup such as the Wizard thumper or maybe the Seymour duncan Hot should give your bass a darker tone, also maybe swapping out the greasebucket for a standard 250k tone control ,I also know that the badass bass on the Highway one basses adds some highs to the tone , maybe swapping the bridge for a more traditional one , these changes should darken your tone a fair bit.
 11. I like the way theyve reviewed the Zodiac de scorpio again , good to see its money well spent
 12.
My favourite bass is a CIJ Jazz made of basswood. It's sunburst and not the prettiest but has a lovely tone to it. Got rid of it once but managed to track it down and got it back!
Is that the one you sold/traded to Deaver that I bought off him then swapped with you for the Ibby SR900 , if so then im glad your enjoying the bass , funny how things work out sometimes
 13. Hi , just thought I would add my 2 cents . I've just recently got an eq pedal as the eq section on my combo amp is limited to say the least. Anyhow I was trying to get a tighter, more defined sound and boosted the treble sliders and gave the 800hz slider a slight boost, then I had a fiddle with the 2 bass sliders (50 and 120hz) and lo and behold there it was , by cutting slightly at 120hz I had got rid of all the woolyness I was hearing before , there was mids after all they were just being masked by high bass frequencies.
 14.
How do you know that? Has this EVER happened?
I did laugh when I read this , perhaps I could have come up with a better example
 15.
Anybody had experience with these cheap strings on stringbusters? There's alot of guff about them on the page which gives the impression that they're decent, but crisps are packed in foil packaging and they go out of date! Also, there is a little packet of silica gel in everything these days! So, anyone tried them?
Never tried them but hopefully these links may help http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...highlight=kerly http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.p...highlight=kerly
 16. I recently bought a set of Rotos for a 5 string bass (130-45) I have recently aquired as I figured I should probably change the strings that were on the bass when I bought it, I have previously been a long tern Roto user but had had this bass for about a month and not changed the strings that were on it when I bought it. Anyhow put the Rotos on and they just felt terrible in comparison , the strings were rough as hell, the B string was so floppy it was like playing a wet noodle whilst the other strings felt like bridge cables in comparison with the nickel rounds that were on the bass before (and anyone that knows me knows that I hate high tension strings). The strings also sounded unbalanced , the E string sounded a bit dead compared to the other strings in the set. The Rotos stayed on for about half an hour before I put the previous set of strings back on. Edit: I should mention though that there pressurewound strings are awesome
 17.
I can't tell if he's overrated or not... I can never bloody hear him... On the odd occasions when he does poke his head through the mix, my first thought is always "Ye gods, what a terrible bass sound..."
Maybe thats the reason for the terrible bass sound, he can't hear himself either
 18.
Strange thread this- like what is overated?- seems to me this thread is about technique not musical ability. Theres a quote on here that says Jamerson would be a better bass player if he played with two fingers- no doubt some bright spark will say he would be better if he slapped or double thumbed. Both suggestions however will miss the point its not how you play but WHAT you play. There will never be another as successful as Jamerson and his music will be listened to in 100 years- same as the beatles and mozart. Can you say the same about Level 42 ( I still think Mark King is a terrific bass player though) - but its just chops. Bob
Got to agree about Level 42 , Mark King can play but there music is the dullest thing, most soul less music ive ever heard
 19.
Yaaaaay I'm not going insane! (Well, I probably am, but not over this issue) Thanks for the swift responses. I have an additional question now - my other bass (5 string Schecter) has a 2-band EQ... however, I've found that setting the EQ pots to flat on that one equals a very mid-centric sound, at least to my ears... I'm taking a very simplistic approach to equalisation here, but surely that's just down to the character of the bass, isn't it? When I'm flattening the bass and treble, I'm not still boosting the mid-range am I? Haha, that sounds so ridiculous when I think about it. Don't even bother answering that one, I'm actually being an idiot this time...
It probably is down to the character of the bass (woods used etc) although it could be other things such as type of strings used, the character of the pickups (p bass pickups for example are very mid rangey), maybe the preamp has a slightly mid biased sound. To answer your last question when you flatten the bass and treble you are not boosting the midrange , however because you are reducing the bass and treble the midrange will stand out more (kind of like if you are playing in a 3 piece band and the guitarist turns his volume down , your bass will sound louder even though you have not turned up your volume) , on the other hand if you were to boost your bass and treble , the mid range will sound less prominent.
 20. if it was me , id definately trade in the epi for the bison
 21. Which B4 is it your looking at , there is a light coloured one (which I assume is maple) and a really nice looking mahogany/swamp ash one. Would probably still go for the Ibanez though as ive owned a few and theyve all been really good
 22. I would be interested to hear peoples thoughts on how the finish of the wood affects tone , it seems a lot of basses seem to have a finish half an inch thick , surely this has an affect on tone, sustain etc . Edit: And if an unfinshed wood does sound better, how much of that is due to the fact that the manafacturer cannot get away with using shoddy wood like they could do with a painted finish ?
 23.
D'Addarios is what they seemed to be on my CV Jazz - although I had them off and replaced in about 15 minutes.
Nice sounding strings but the tension of D'Addarios is unreal , I used them for a while as they sounded really good but after a few months of using them I felt like my fingers were gonna fall off , felt like I was playing iron bars
 24.
That's interesting - I'd say it has a pretty dark, thick stock tone. Which is why I swapped out the pickups. Tone is still dark/warm but a lot less boring to my ears. I didn't know they did a maple version, when does it date from? Mine must be around 2005-ish
I believe mine is a 1995 SR505 , Ibanez discontinued the maple SR505's , I think they were around only from 95 - 96 . Im at work so cant upload a picture of mine but theres a good pic here http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1996/96031.jpg The SR705 seems to be a good middle ground as it uses Mahogany with Maple wings IIRC. Interesting you should say the tone is pretty dark , I remember when I owned an SR900 the MK1 pickups and preamp seemed pretty bright with the tone set flat, just goes to show how much the wood affects the tone.
 25.
I swapped out the Bart MK1s on my Ibanez SR500 and replaced them with Nordstrand Big Singles. They're slightly narrower than the Barts but I wasn't bothered about cosmetics at all. If I was, I'd fit a pickguard to hide the gaps. At first I ran it through the MK1 pre but have now gone passive, and much prefer the single coil passive sound. However there is something of the 'dark' character of the bass that remains, giving it quite a thick tone. I assume this is due to the body (mahogany) and neck (bubinga/wenge with rosewood). When I flip the S1 switch I fitted when I converted to passive, it sounds massive. My conclusion was that bad/poorly matched electronics can really 'choke' the tone of the wood, conversely a good bit will bring out the best in the wood's sonic properties. But the wood's fundamental tone is always there and you can't make mahogany sound like maple. I could be wrong.
How is the stock tone of the SR500 , ive got a maple Sr505 (5 string version of the Sr500) which is quite bright and bouncy sounding and would be interested to hear how it compares tonewise
