I do agree with almost everything that has been said - except the whole 'dont try it if you don't think you're gonna buy it' thing. Most of the time, I can't really save up over £100 unless I KNOW that I'm saving up for something specific. So when I go in and try out (over a few weeks) 200 crummy effetcs, and then i try out a really nice auto-wah-fuzzing-blowtorch (now THAT would be cool), then I know to save money i.e. I save up money, then go into a shop and buy something. I usually Go into a shop, try out the stuff, get GAS, go home, come back a month later and then buy it. </rambling>
+ 1 couldn't agree with you more

Modern bands with interesting bass guitar?
Kings of Leon have interesting bass lines? Dont get me wrong, I love them, But which songs have interesting bass? seams like a lot of route notes to me. I could be wrong.
Because of the times has some cool bass lines , the guy from kol has an awesome tone as well -
What is it with trying to find a bass that works for me ? I don't know if anybody else here has this issue but out of all the basses I own/have owned I have never been able to find a bass that really works for me. Ive owned epiphones, fenders, squiers and countless other basses but have never really been satisfied or inspired with any of them and have found that typically any bass I own gets sold on or swapped or exchanged in a matter of months , either the basses dont feel right or the sound is wrong. I thought I had found "the bass" with the Ibanez I own at the moment but after the joy of owning a new bass has worn off I find the Ibanez a bit too modern sounding and find I am yearning for something a bit more old school (and passive rather than active) Anyway rant over , just needed to vent my frustration

Simple question for Squier Deluxe Jazz Bass owners , I noticed these basses dont have fret markers on the fretboard , just wondered , do they have dot markers on the side of the neck?

How difficult to add an active/passive switch
markdavid replied to markdavid's topic in Repairs and Technical
Heres a wiring diagram for the SR900 The pickups are buffered, the blend is after the buffers and 25k volume is after the preamp which makes it a bit more dificult to do if yiu want to keep existig preamp. the pot values are too low for the pickups to work properly in a passive setup. They might sound a lot quieter with no treble.
Thanks for the help , obviously with what you have said regarding the pot values it may be better to add a switch that completely bypasses the tone and volume controls do you think this would be a difficult task? -
Hi guys and girls , I want to add a passive/active switch to my Ibanez SR900 as I would like to be able to use my bass without a battery and would also like to get a more old school passive tone sometimes , I want the switch so that when I switch to passive the active eq is completely bypassed but not the volume and pickup blend , I will be getting a local luthier to do this work for me , how difficult will this be to do ?
You could try this. It's also available in fireglo, and there's a thread that mentions them here (hooky6stringbass bass bought one). Unfortunately it seems the price has jumped up £40 in the past few weeks since I last looked. HWAudio are doing them for the same price.
Thanks , thats a an awesome looking bass

Hi again , I decided to bite the bullet and try a set pressurewound strings just out of pure curiousity more than anything else. I bought the Rotosound Solo Bass SM55 pressurewounds and I am absolutely floored by the tone of these strings , they punch like mike tyson and have a brilliance in the treble frequencies that sounds awesome, i was pleasantly suprised by how bright the tone from these strings is , ive always liked Duff Mckagans tone and these strings played with a pick nails that tone.

Hi all , Just wondering, I know that half round strings are rounds that are ground to flat finish and pressure wounds are rounds that have been flattened but what is the difference tonally between half round and pressure wound ? Presumably also pressurewound will have slightly more tension that roundwounds or half rounds
imo, ibanez's have a really fat, grungy sound, very useful for punk and funk etc, though ive never heard of one used in metal. give us a soundbite if you get one!
Never heard of one used in metal? youre kidding me!!! Ibanez are very popular in metal Theres Paul Gray from Slipknot, Fieldy from Korn, Peter Iwers from In Flames, Glen Benton from Deicide, Marco Coti Zelati from Lacuna Coil, Mike D'Antonio from Killswitch Engage , im sure theres others as well but these are just players I can remember off the top of my head
at a recent rehearsal i played the same songs on the same bass through two different combo amps set 1: Ashdown MAG C115-300..... 300 watts (RMS) through 15" speaker set 2: Hartke A100..... 100 watts (RMS) through 15" speaker the Hartke absolutely blew the Ashdown away, despite having only a third of the wattage! howcome?
I had a Hartke combo a while back , it wasn't the most powerful combo (100 watts I believe) but it was so punchy sounding, really punchy mids, coincidentally I also have an Ashdown combo (150 watts) which is nowhere as good as the Hartke , It must be something to do with the aluminium cone
Firstly, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Couldn't decide between here, "Bass Guitars", "repair/technical issues" and 'Miscellaneous equipment". I have a Fender Urge Mk1 (32" scale) with the two jazz pick ups and a P pickup between them. Generally I'm very happy with it, but have always found that the sound of the P Pickup is very similar to the sound of the two Jazzes blended together, and as such it seems a bit of a waste. (perhaps Stu Hamm's ear is more sensitive than mine). For those who don't know the instrument it has a small body (smaller than a strat) and thinnish neck, with generally a bright tone - in fact I've already gone to ground wounds in order to dull the tone down a bit. Anyway, I've now decided to do something about it, to try and get a more useful range of tones. I have spoken to Andy at Wizard (who is not familiar with the instrument), and we sort of concluded that a sensible thing to try would be to try a Thumper in place of the standard P pick up and leave the jazzes as they are. He also pointed out that part of the problem could be that the P, being between the two Js, is probably closer to the bridge than it would be ideally. However, this is all conjecture, I've not a great experience of different pick ups, and have never heard a Thumper in the flesh, and would it sound the same on this small bodied bass anyway? Having said that, I suspect that what I want is for the P pickup to sound more like a precision bass, even though it is not on a precision bass body/neck. So, I'm really after opinions on what I should try, especially if anyone out there has had the same 'problem' with an Urge and has done something about it. I don't really want to change the bass as I love it in all other respects. The cost of a Thumper isn't a problem if it gives me what I want, but I don't want to buy that only to decide that really I wanted to change the Jazz pick ups! Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Looking at a picture of the Urge bass I suspect part of the problem is the close proximity of the pickups. From what you have described about the sound of the P pickup sounding similar to the 2 jazz pickups blended together it sounds like either the bass is very bright accoustically (therefore emphasising treble frequencies over mids) or maybe the P pickup in the Urge bass is designed to be brighter and less midrangy than a standard P pickup. A good way to make the P pickup sound more Precision like would be to choose a P pickup with a strong mid range response (which I believe the Thumper has)
Thanks for that, that explains a lot. I'll have to remortgage the house and take the plunge with a set of TIs then.
When you think of how long they last though (flats last indefinately, most people keep them on their bass for years) you will initially spend more but end up saving money as you will not have to change strings as often. If you want low tension flatwounds and dont want to pay TI's prices , most companies do flats in light gauge , just avoid Fender or Roto flats

I just recently got an Ibanez SR900 that I traded for my Jazz bass , I love the tone of this bass its got a tight , springy kind of tone , even unplugged it sounds good so I would probably go for an Ibanez of some sort
One old tip I've used for years is using the rubber rings from Grolsch bottles as cheap but effective strap locks.
I've tried fitting flatwounds to my Fender MIM P, however, I could have driven a bus through the action after I'd fitted them. They were Rotosounds incidently. If changing to flatwounds do you need to adjust the neck on most basses, or does it depend on the bass and brand of strings?
Rotosound flatwounds are notoriously ridiculously high tension , I had a set on a bass of mine they were standard gauge (105-45) but tuned DGCF , even at that tuning the tension was too high, I ended up taking them off. Flats are slightly higher tension than rounds and most people tend to go a gauge lighter with flats than they would with roundwounds , whether or not you will need to adjust the neck or not would depend on the brand , rotos and fender flats are very high tension , ti's are fairly low tension
Good for you matey. What I'm concerned about is the way that less experienced players seem to be using flats because they are easier to control
Whats wrong with that?
