1.
I want mellow but punchy, nothing too bright, sort of vintage-ish but with plenty of cut. Something along the lines of the bass sound on Disco inferno by The Trampps. (Don't want much, me)
This website http://www.axesrus.com/axepickup.htm has a set of Fender Custom Shop 60's Electric J-Bass Guitar Pickup set pick ups , if you want vintage they may be what you are looking for and it means you can still keep the Fender vibe with the sound
2.
MD. They are both (Mex and Jap) very good instruments and, in no way be put off by them because they are not 'made in America' ... QC at both areas of production is as good (and if I dare put my head above the parapet) if not better than the US. I very nearly bought a MIM Frank Bello sig Pbass and I found it be excellently made. Jap Fenders are as good as other Jap makes, Yamaha, Ibanez etc so 'nuff said about that!!!!! You'll be fine going with MIJ or MIM as long as it fits you, the music you play and your wallet....
Thanks Burpster , I know that the MIM pick ups are made slightly differently whilst the MIJ pickups are pretty much identical to the US ones is this correct.
3.
MD, Theres some on Thomann worth a look....? P upgrade for 329
Hiya Burpster, I always wondered what it means by P upgrade on a website as ive seen P and Jazz upgrades and it is probably just another name for a MIJ or MIM P Bass ?
4.
There are some importers that will deliver to your door: www.fareastguitars.co.uk www.craftedinjapan.co.uk www.guitaremporium.co.uk/
Cheers for that , very helpful
5. Hi, I have decided that I am going to save for a MIJ Fender. I am in the croydon area and wondered if anybody knew where I could buy MIJ Fenders , I am in the croydon area but I dont mind travelling a little , Any suggestions
6.
I'm sure for what they cost, they are capable...... But I ask of you, why? You've already got into 'upgrading for better effect' (ie the SDs in your Squire) I see this as a backward step.....(as soon as you get them, you'll want to spend X upgrading pups and bridges etc) Might I be bold enough to suggest, save your £200 and save the rest towards your first Fender Highway One.....
Good point, I am actually thinking about getting a MIJ or MIM Jazz Bass (MIA is way out of my price range) how are the MIM and MIJ Jazz Basses , I have heard mixed opinions of them?
7. Hi, Was wondering if anybody knew of any online music stores that offer credit as I would really like a Jazz bass but cannot picture myself having the money to buy one anytime soon, all replies appreciated
8.
I honestly have no clue which bass to get. I have a 5 string Carvin bass but I don't like it very much. Can somebody tell me whats the best bass I could get for like up to $850? Thanks.
Hi, Just seen this Fender P Bass on Ebay , very good price might be worth a look , auction ends today though Fender P Bass on Ebay
9.
Yea, pop punk. I want a Mark Hoppus bass, but my friend says they're a load of crap I'm a huge Mark Hoppus fan. My sig can prove that How are those basses?
I have not played one of the Mark Hoppus basses but they use seymour duncan quarter pounders which are very good pick ups, quite bright sounding , lots of punch. The only thing with the Mark Hoppus bass is that there is no tone control so there is only really one sound with that bass , however thats the idea behind that bass is that you just plug in the bass and play it. I would definately have a look at those basses if I had the money and I was looking to buy a fender.
10. Have been thinking about getting a Harley Benton Beat Bass http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_beatbass.htm and the HARLEY BENTON HBP90BK http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbp...scale_ebass.htm as I think the Beatbass would sound awesome with some Tapewounds on it and the HBP90BK has an awesome vintage look and would probably be killer with some upgraded pickups , and the shortscale would give a good old school thump to the sound (once pick ups upgraded) Any one owned either of these basses? Any thoughts , suggestions etc . All comments welcome
11. Hi, Carvin basses are nice instruments generally speaking , you should try and find someone to swap with as you could get a really nice bass that way as carvins are good basses
12. Hi , Does anybody know of any other bass that sounds like the DeArmond Ashbory Bass , I love the sound of this Bass http://www.frozencloudmusic.com/~chrishisc...itar%20samples/ but I know I could not adapt to the 18" scale. Any Suggestions
13.
One of my earliest influences, & still one of my favourite players. Great melodic sense, scarily precise right-hand (plectrum) technique, and those basslines - Halo Of Flies, Billion $ Babies, Blue Turk, Gutter Cat... Genius. Jon.
+1 The bass tone on halo of flies is FAT , that is one big monster of a bass tone on that song and the way that he adds melodies to the song with his bass and that his bass is high in the mix is awesome
14.
..... your bass is just "wooden furniture", of the musical kind! I don't use the scented stuff but I'm sure that your band will like the smell..... would it mask the sweatty drummer!
Thanks for the reply , made me laugh
15. Hi , thanks for the replies, my fingerboard is rosewood rather than the maple type. I have some furniture cream at home which contains beeswax (pure natural beeswax with silk protein furniture polish , enriched with lavender and chamomile essential oils) do you think this will be ok to use to clean my fingerboard on my bass(after all its designed for wooden furniture)
16. Hi, I apologise if this is a really dumb question but I am going to get some lemon oil to clean my bass as the fingerboard on my bass is a little on the grungy side. I have heard people say that you need to take the strings off your bass to clean it , is this actually neccessary or is it just because the strings get in the way when you are trying to clean? I know this seems like a strange thing to ask but I would rather just dab a small amount on a cloth and slide the cloth under the strings as I hate that whole re tuning thing
17. Hi, Was hoping that somebody may be able to help with this. I am based in croydon (just outside of south london) and need recommendations for a good place to take my bass for a setup, any suggestions. I have some fret buzz on the D string (but only on various frets) , this has happened after changing string type so I am thinking that the bass probably needs somebody to adjust the truss rod , action is set a little on the high side at the moment. can anyone recommend a good tech in or around the croydon area. The bass is a squire p bass special with basslines pips
18. Have seen these strings a few times but have never used , what is a piano design string?, are these strings any good? and does the different design change the tone? , do they sound brighter ?, last longer?, whats the deal with these strings
19.
Not sure if you'll all agree that it's "Porn" material but I think they're lovely.
Nothing wrong with Squiers , my main bass is a Squier with seymour duncans, nice pics , really not helping me control my gas for a Squier vintage modified jazz bass
20. Hi, Have seen these strings for a very good price , does anybody know if they are any good? , have not heard of them before
21. Hi, It could be either the pre amp or the pick ups as they are single coils (which are notorious for hiss etc) , However it may (or may not) be worth noting that Marcus Miller actually uses a Sadowsky pre amp on his bass
22. sorry I meant to include a picture of the pedal
23. Hi, I have seen a Boss OD3 overdrive pedal going for a good price. I was looking at maybe buying the pedal I am after a very subtle overdrive effect, no blazing distortion , no over the top fuzz , I am just after something that can produce a subtle overdrive to add a bit of warmth to my tone and bring out the growl of my J pick up a bit, Will this pedal do this? I have tried the Boss Bass Overdrive before but it was too over the top and too distorted
24. Not sure about fat sounding but you could try the seymour duncan spb-1 vintage for p bass http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...tageforPBassreg , it is based on the 1957 precision bass pick up so is definately vintage sounding
