1.
Nope..don't get this at all. Sometimes I can't wait to get into a warm bed.
For me that's the wonder of it. You've finished a gig, it's late, you're lucky enough to not have to drive anyone home, low or no music to cool you're ears down, empty roads and then bed! I love the bit of getting home to my bed, it's almost like a reward for a long, late night. "Here you are sire! Come and rest your music invincibility!" Dan
2. I'd dread to think how upset I'd be if my bass was stolen. Especially as it was an 18 birthday present from my dad and he passed away last year. My heart goes out to him and hope he gets it back. As for the thief? You're a knob. Dan
3. Kew gardens is a wonderful day out if you have the time. As for mobility scooters? I'm sure there's a tourist board you could get in contact with who could arrange something. Dan
4. Oh I forgot to mention! There is an awesome bagel shop on Brick Lane I think it is, some one may need to correct me on this. It's open literally 24/7, I don't remember seeing locks on the door. Dad used to wake us up at 3am, "come on lets get some bagels!". I swear I saw 2 hardcore punks come in, followed by 2 armed police officers, followed by a couple of paramedics! Dan
5. This is what gets me. Fender seem to be under the impression that they can do what they want and people will buy it because it's a Fender. Thing is, I bet a good one does play like a dream. But then how often do these crop up? Dan
6.
I'm not an accomplished reader myself but the answer to this problem seems to me to be don't be looking for an F (or whatever note). Just get your hand in the right place, know what key you're in and play the intervals. So, you're in key of C (or whatever), just play the fourth (i.e. F in this case). This does depend on knowing your scales because what you see written will commonly take you up and down those scales.
I did mean an F on the staff, but still an excellent point! After all, basic scales are the basis of music. I found it was not just knowledge of your bass that I struggled with, it was knowing what was going on on the paper. Rhythm in particular gets me, but its getting there with practice. Dan
7.
Just spotted this. I think all of what has been said is good advice. Not sure if this is worth anything but here goes. . . . I have two Aria Elite, with the same set up as the one you refer to. The bridge pick-up on both doesn't kick out as much Umph as the neck. On the bridge only, are you getting an equal sound over all the strings, just not as loud as the other pick-up? As you have tapped the pick-up, as you described, it may be duff but there is a volume difference on mine, which is the same as two others I have played. Got any pics of the beast? Cheers. Just read one of your posts again - odd when both switches down!! Err, I'll get me coat!!
Here they are as promised! 8. Just stumbled across this thread! Heres my (well, my late Dad's) mostly working Pro II Black 'n' Gold. It needs some attention and a bit of work. Hopefully get it playing by my sisters wedding. Dan
9. To add even more insult to injury, a band I used to be in was doing some recording and the guitarist had a Fender Jazz master guitar, the Elvis Costello signature model. Lovely sounding guitar, stunning even. But he couldn't record with it because of a constant buzz probably due to shielding. Bear in mind it was as new but bought second hand as was over £1k. I would have been livid if that was my guitar. You spend all that money on something you can't record with because it hasn't been built properly. I'll stick to my stingray, which, ironically is essentially a Fender! Dan
10. I can see your point totally, I think Fenders are insanely over rated. I'v never gotton on with fenders, I really don't like the feel of them, and every one I'v played feels totally different from the others, even 2 Jazz' feel different. As for the suggestion of changing the pick ups, when you buy a bass of that standard should you really need to change parts? It should be like their (supposed) reputation; spot on. I'v never seen the appeal with Fenders, and I would like a Jazz bass, but the way I view Fender is that they really gave the industry a massive kick start. Since then other companies have joined in and have (IMO) done the job better, they've taken influence and produced to a higher level. Dan
11. Camden is awesome, I love visiting that place. Theres loads of great food places there and if he's there, theres a great donut cart which is well worth the visit. If you like architecture, visit the Lloyds building, preferably at night and the design museum is good to. If you're there on a Sunday pop into the Barbican, they usually have free foyer gigs. Dan
12. Yep! I know what you mean. Ive been able to read for sometime but was so slow at it it was useless. You know what I mean, you can find an F but takes a life time. Ive been doing tonnes more lately thanks to the pinned notation thread in GD. Recently learnt Burn This Disco Out from dots and things like Knights Of Cydonia are great for practising sight reading. Dan
13. Well done!! Welcome to the dark side! Are you in a band yet? Dan
14. Ive seen the Aussy pink floyd before, they're a great band and an excellent show. But £33 is rather steep. I'd be keen to here what Pete Academy thinks. He is after all in a covers band when you boil it down, albeit a bloody fantastic one at that to! No disrespect Pete! Dan
15. I have a 104 HR, and it has 2 jack inputs and a speakon. Is the HF version any different? And a Jack wont go into the speakon bit either (butters in the fridge!). Could you not just use jack-jack? I dont think they'll be any difference ion volume/tone or any nonsense like that. Dan
16. The Toys Go Winding Down by Primus is a good one for 3 fingers. Its a technique I wouldn't mind learning but my right hand ring finger is missing it's tip, so it won't reach! Ultimately its practice, start slow and work up from there. Dan
17.
In the average band with say, two (or even one) guitars, bass and drums, even with everyone playing very low, this is still enough to damage your hearing. I cant remember the exact amount of decibles required to cause damage, but I know it is comparatively low. Even the drums alone, played reasonably low can cause damage. If you doubt this, then do some research.
I was informed from level 42's sound man that it's 85db. Though I would think it would be that region as every one is different. Dan
18.
I use ACS ER15's for gigs and rehearsals.
Plus a million bajillion. An investment you won't regret. Any earplugs you may find you'll have to take in and out. I find my ER 15's so comfy I leave them in all night. Dan
19. Thats on hand customer service for you!! I've used Rotosounds for years now, love 'em. It's good to see a company being this active amongst users. Not drug users mind. Dan
20.
I wouldn't carry a Wal around in a cheap gig bag and would pay out for a Mono.
I'd go with that, not cheap but definitely worth it. I love mines to bits, water proof to. Dan
21. Finally! A practical use for that triple thumping technique! That was good, I enjoyed that, good find! Dan
22. Perhaps we should start our own Union! UOBWWGSO (Union Of Bands Who Won't Get Screwed Over) I think this thread is best summed up by "the bar staff get paid so why shouldn't the band?". Dan
23. Iv had Alan Shearer in the audience. Though to be fair, it was his local. And Kevin Nolan to, again same place. I had no idea who Kevin Nolan was, Im not in the slightest bit a football fan. He was chatting to my 2 band mates who have a lot of respect for him, Nolan shook their hands and as I approached he looked at me and I just stared straight at him. The kind of look of "yes, can I help you?". He thanked me for the first set when he realised I was in the band and requested O-feckin-asis. We played it and he was more than happy! Dan
24.
They don't care if you are David Bowie? Complete arse. Of course they would care if they were working with David Bowie. If they are the kind of people who would not give a sh1t about working with a musician of the calibur and status of David Bowie, then they should not be doing the job.
I think the point being that some musicians who have made it, see themselves above others because of who they are. Van Morrison sacked his entire team because he "wanted a new one", Mariah Carey, Axl Rose has a notorious child like behaviour. It still made me laugh, we've all come across people who think they're great. Dan
