1. Daft Punk's album, obvious perhaps, but I've really enjoyed it. More when I don't think of it as a Daft Punk album. I'm looking forward to hearing the new BNH album to. Dan
2. Yep! I love my fretless! I play it a lot of the time now, even learnt Gas Light Abbie on it. Dan
3. I'll be sending to the address on the website, I should have about 5 sets to send off. Dan
4. Very good point pete. I have an old set of ukulele strings which I was going to put in anyway. They get used or they don't! Dan
5. That's a great idea. I bought a new set the other day and mentioned this to the shop, I think they may do something similar. Dan
6.
Indeed it is!
Ha! He's friends with a family I know up here. Small world! Dan
7.
Yes, do this for sure. And then ask every one of us on basschat to like and share the page and let's get some strings out there. Edit: I shared their website on Facebook - I'm friends with enough guitarists and bass players to get a few sets sent out and I've got 3-4 old sets I can send. I also singled out one of my dad's old friends who's a very experienced session musician (keys though, not guitar/bass) so he can hopefully send it out to his contacts. In fact, from his website: "I have a musical career spanning almost 30 years, You can hear my Keyboard playing on many albums & TV shows Featuring the following artists. Ray Charles, James Brown, Lionel Ritchie, Joe Cocker, Hue & Cry, Curtis Steigers, Lulu, Will Young, Sister Sledge, Elaine Paige, The Nolans, Sarah Brightman, Boy George, Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins, The Roly Poly’s, Michael Ball, Shirley Bassey, Beverly Craven, James Morrison,The Feeling, McFly, Sophie Ellis Bexter, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes." So I'd say he knows a few people!
Is that Malcolm maddock at all? This string donation is a wonderful idea, and really seems to be getting about. I have a set or 2 I'd happily donate. Dan
8. James blunt redeems himself in interviews, but Liam Gallagher is a monumental twat in every possible sense. Someone needs to tell him that the 90's britpop, arrogant, monkey swagger isn't cool anymore. Dan
9. I play the 210 traveller in my covers band, and my original pop rock band. I've used it also for a heavy rock band to and sounds great with all. I have used the 115p but only with the 210 and it was fantastic, go for it! Unlike JTUK, I actually really like the markbass cabs loud and they cope very well especially with very low notes through them. In the heavy rock band we did 'By The Way' and '..Brick In The Wall' in drop C# and the cabs just took it. Really recommend them. Dan
10. HI Krispn, sorry I haven't messaged back, Im in a meeting with the band on Thursday and will give you a better time scale very soon! Dan
11.
Didn't Mick Karn too? and he was very good indeed!!
He must be one of them, but Gilmour does play fretless for her. At least on a few tracks. I should really listen to more Kate Bush. Dan
12. I didn't know she played bass. I know David Gilmour plays fretless for her, and is very good. Dan
13. Yes! I have a basic fretless and it's incredible! You will NOT be disappointed! Dan
14.
Fair points and, of course, difficult to argue against in absolute terms. But where does all this creeping regulation and safety-consciousness stop? We're supposedly living in a free society but we are bound by an increasing number of rules and regulations and seem to need permission to do almost everything, so much so that we now have a tendency to automatically assume we need 'official' permission for stuff. Very sad but seemingly inevitable because these things creep up on us all gradually and people don't notice.
Yeah, I suppose it can get to that point, but only time will tell. I reckon I'll start turning down work when a venue asks for proof of purchase for our gear! Dan
15.
I'd reply that if they needed a risk assessment then it all sounds too risky to bother doing the gig in the first place.
It's standard practice at a lot of big venues. I've done one before for a wedding we did at the Hancock Museum in Newcastle, it's really a formality so the venue can turn round and say that all eventualities have been considered, and you've taken the measures necessary to avoid accidents. It's no different to solicitors writing letters, and they write a lot! As long as it's down on paper, people are covered in a worst case scenario. Dan
16.
Yes, you need either a PAT or a PA Test.
1, 2. 1, 2. Testing, 1, 2.
17. We have our gear pat tested, and pubs have never asked for a certificate but it's best to have it just in case. Even if its not your profession, it doesn't stop you being professional. And it's a safe guard along with PLI. I had mine done free by the electrician at Draeger Dan
18. I'm at work, so have only scan read the first part. I'm also a couch surfer and I think it's an excellent idea. A gig swap if you will! I'll read your post thoroughly later and get in touch. Dan
19. Has any one got 'Little Shop of Horrors'? I'd love to get a look at the notation for that. Dan
20.
Personally, I find the lines actually interfere with my brain visually with fretless, making the whole fingerboard look too busy. So I actually prefer unlined, and did right from the start of learning the instrument.
Yes!! Me to! They make me feel dizzy when playing! Dan
21. My only fretless ever is my current, a Sandberg Basic fretless, with 1/4 lines. So lines on the top and that's all. I love it, it looks better from the crowds view to. You get used to it pretty quickly, I played plugged into a tuner for a little bit to get my D and G strings a bit more accurate to help with muscle memory. Do it! Dan
22. Have a play around with it depending on the room. But I tend to have it at about 120hz. Dan
23.
Good Idea! Now, who knows where to get the grill cloth?
Nope, can't help you there. You're on your own now! Dan
24. I have a mark bass cab, the grill comes off by taking a screwdriver to the screws holding it on. Simple as that! If you're wanting a cloth grill, you could knock up a wooden frame with little support struts in the inside corners fairly easily. Cover that with the cloth and hey presto! It's cheap and if you like it, there you go. Dan
25.
It is good ear training though and I do this on occasion. I also like to play guitar while watching telly sometimes and play along with any incidental music, adverts, theme tunes etc...
Yes! I've done this, it's great fun and jingles stick in your head so they're easy to remember and learn form memory. I once set myself the task of learning an album a week, that was fun! I should probably pick that up again sometime. Dan
