Awesome! Come on come over is nuts, it really does get your fingers in a twist! If you're wanting a challenge, try dead goon by mr bungle. Ok, if you want a challenge for your self, I'm not sure it would fit in the funk band! Dan -
Transposing is all part of playing and you will improve as a player because of it. If you know what the 'shape' you're playing is then transposing it won't be a problem, a minor triad is the same anywhere on the neck. And as for open strings, learning where the notes are will make it all the more easier to play. I've gigged with people who have played the same songs in several keys, again, you're scales are the same anywhere on the neck so transposing is at its most basic level just moving you're hand up and down the neck accordingly. I've done those types of bands enough that now, I wouldn't stand for it. I'd just leave as it isn't worthwhile of my time. However, I don't know your musical level/profession and all that stuff so, ask your self; "does this happen so frequently that you know it WILL happen?" Or is it only the occasional gig. Then, you will have your answer. Alternatively, you could try and talk to them, but if your, as yu put it, guitard is the kind of person who needs a potato stamp to sign his name then you'll be reintroducing your head to a brick wall. I hope you get sorted. Dan
I know that EBMM recommend gun oil for their untreated necks, but how much protection it offers I am sceptical.
I don't think it would offer any protection otherwise the neck would be laquered surely? I would assume the oil is more to condition the neck, to treat it rather than protect it. I could be wrong! I do just play hem after all. Dan
Keef can http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7g3s44FZlY
Hahaha!! I've had to push someone off a stage before, it's actually rather satisfying! The singer had previously had the mic knocked into his teeth by a dancer at a pub, and so was rather wary of people near the stage. This guy jumps on the stage to take a short cut across the venue so I pushed him off! Dan

I have a music man bass to, I've had 2 adjustments made on it in the 11 years I've had it. It's been great though I think I do need to get really thoroughly cleaned with some of that 0000 grade wool, as the neck isn't dirty as such, but it's a little darker in colour now and not as smooth as my Sandberg neck. It's not in a bad way, but it's had 11 years of playing on it, it's bound to pick up something. Dan

Reading is incredibly useful. I can read, I'm not very quick but I can certainly read, I learnt YYZ from dots and things like Master Blaster are a joy to learn from. At the moment (as a challenge I stress!) I'm learning the marimba part of Zappa's St. Alfonzos Pancake Breakfast. I haven't come across a situation where I've needed it. Yet. It's a very good skill to have at your disposal. Dan

Oooh, I dunno, not in that colour. I tell you what, seeing as it's you, I'll give you £50. Dan

We all agree in our band just to tell the punters to get away/off/back in as blunt a way as possible. Theres a couple of places we play regularly and punters try and get on the stage often, nothing bad, they're just pissed or want to talk to us. What we tell them is "you have to get off the stage or the bouncer WILL throw you out". That's always enough for them. I find the blunt and firm way often works, even if it is "no you cant play the drums", "because I said". Telling them how much things cost won't make a blind bit of difference, they're pissed and won't care. Drinks on bass bins? I just tell them very firmly "no drinks on the equipment" and keep telling them that until they remove it. Our guitarist does that with regards to drinks next to his pedal board and it works. In the words of Lord Flashhart, "firm and fruity" is the way! Dan

Anyone want to talk about The Meters?!
pietruszka replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
The meters are awesome! That's my music for the day sorted! Dan -
I also have a 3 band EQ on my Sandberg Basic. It's brilliant! The bass is rather sensitive I find so not much is needed, the mid and treble are great on the fretless model I have. Definitely worth it! Dan

Video - Awesome band, bassist and my God, the bass face!
pietruszka replied to wateroftyne's topic in General Discussion
That was great! Even if it was a Beatles track! Reminds me of a band I saw at the Jazz cafe Camden, cant remember the girls first name, something Johnson and they were just like this. Really enjoyed that! And yes, I could hear everything the bassist was doing to. He was just as a bass player should be, to my ears. Dan -
I also quite like the later albums. Two Against Nature, especially. Gaslighting Abbie is a bass masterpiece and was a nightmare to learn.
I love Gaslighting Abbie! It was a firm favourite of my dad's to, those low D's sound wonderful. The Aja album is an early memory of visiting my dad in London and always reminds me of it. I remember seeing that cover and not knowing what it was exactly, still don't if I'm honest! I was always drawn to them 'cos my name was on the cover! That album in particular always struck me as 'one of those' albums, it's difficult for me to describe but the kind of album that knew what it was. If that makes any sense? Home At Last and Josie are fantastic pieces of music and I'll never tire of them. Hey Nineteen is great to. Dan

Has Adam Yauch been mentioned? His playing was great to listen to, his playing on The Mix Up was by no means boundry pushing or overly complex but fantastic none the less. Dan
Try to get at least an idea of what you will be playing from the guy that is booking you as its not a very nice situation tobe asked to do a gig but not what you're going to be playing and put it onto MP3 or CD for the car and just keep listening to them constantly. Different story with weddings as most bands tend to do a lot of similar songs I did a dep gig 250 miles away with a band I'd never met before with 30 songs I'd never done before with 2 days notice a few weeks ago - sometimes the pressure can help you learn quicker as long as you take your time and don't panic. They're not going to expect someone who can play the songs note perfect, the audience won't notice if you don't play it exactly like the record anyway. Just learn the basic notes first.
Exactly this!! This is what makes it worth while, because when it goes right it's really satisfying, and thats the basis on which we do these jobs isn't it? It is for me. As Delberthot says, have the tracks on loop if you can and just familiarise your self with the songs themselves. Before I joined the current function band I'm in, I got a phone call form the singer who said they needed a bass player blah blah blah, he gave me the set through email and I glanced over it, didn't pay much attention really. I went on holiday and had to learn 30 songs in a day and a half before 1 rehearsal and then 3 months of gigs. It was fine, make charts for your self (in big writing, don't make the mistake I did!), and just play the basic notes if you're not too confident. It'll be fine! Do it, enjoy yourself. Dan

I've heard so many great things about Roqsolid, I can't afford them otherwise I'd get one despite them being very reasonable. My sister made me one from a shower curtain, yes it's basic but it does the job. It's never going to be up to the standard of a proper cover but it's a very cheap alternative. Dan
Did a bee gees song the other night at a run through, thought it would be awful when I saw it on the list, but it was one of those moments where you just smile cause it just sounds so right Re the op , madness songs and the like are real fun, and hats off if you pulled of that blockheads line well
Yeah, we got hit me nailed, the sax player did all that odd blow your nose Payne type stuff, I'm sure he did the 2 saxes at the same time on occasion to. We did Sex And Drugs And Rock And Roll to, which was also really good. Man that line up made everything sound good! Dan
-
The same line up I mentioned in the opening post did a little bit of Cosmic Debris in a rehearsal once, that felt rather good! Our drummer was absolutely on the ball. Dan

They should sit down and listen to Origin Of A Symmetry again! I personally don't like the new Muse single, to me it's not what Muse are supposed to be. The only decent thing after Showbiz, was Knights Of Cydonia. Dan
A dub cover of Sabbath's 'Iron Man' with the vocal melody played on trumpet and trombone.
:0 Do you have a recording of this?! I'd love to hear it! Dan
One song thats getting a bit of love from me at the moment is Michael Jackson PYT. When it was suggested for the set i secretly didn't want it to work but actually it sounded great. Something about it that gels with our lineup and just works.
That's an awesome track! We do that in my current function band, but it's not the line up I spoke of at the start of this thread. Dan

Individual Songs Bass Score/Dots. Where from?
pietruszka replied to Carld's topic in General Discussion
Does any one know of any Zappa bass transcriptions? I've tried looking and can't find much, there was something on talk bass that came up on a search engine but I can't remember! I've found something written out for St Alfonzos and have been working on playing the end bit that Underwood plays. Dan -
You've done more than one? Why?
I have asked myself that many times! Believe it or not, it's the only promoter prepared to give us gigs, however, we're now saying no to them as they aren't worth it. Each gig has little to no crowd in, and as such it's a cheek he calls himself a promoter. If you're just booking bands then you're an agent, if you're a promoter then promote the bloody thing. Dan
