1. That's my old bass, the top and bottom pics were taken at my house, I thought they looked familiar. Someone will end up with a great bass here, it plays like a dream. If I could justify it, I'd have it back in a shot, unfortunately I sold it because I wasn't using it, and it would still be the same. Good luck with the sale.
2. Are the top and bottom pics of the actual bass? Did you get this from Norm?
3. Yes don't forget the apparently woeful build quality! I'm very lucky, I think my wife must keep swapping mine for a new one each time I leave the house. Must be the only explanation for it still being as good as new, with handles, feet and finish all still perfectly intact! 😉
4. Does the venue give you an invoice to submit to Event Uk, or do you just use an invoice template? The venue obviously have to confirm the fee with Event?
5.
I've not ruled out trying one but I don't really like the looks of them. This isn't a dig, we all have different aesthetic qualities we look for, personally: - I'm not keen on the stuff they use to cover the non-"retro" cabs (ie all the 12's) - I don't like the sharp-ish looking edges of the front porting (or indeed the visibility of the porting) - I've not seen the new ones but I didn't like the way the panel at the back for inserting the speaker leads sat non-flush/inset (it just looked a little cheap) - I prefer inset handles (though I know nearly every manufacturer is doing the same as BF, I wish they'd all stop it) I know none of that is really important or even has any bearing on the build quality but they add to the feeling for me like the cabs don't look like a premium product (the retro 210's are a vast step in in terms of quality looks, though I'm not keen on the metal grill). I completely get that people don't like the faux-retro styling of brands like Aguillar/TKS (with v-frame) - each to our own I guess. Again that wasn't a dig at Barefaced, I don't want to get drawn into to the war of the fanboi's - but if you ask what people don't like the looks of (talking only about the looks) that's what I would say. I would still try one if one was offered or I was down in Brighton & this is no comment on the way they sound (I've only heard two at gigs & neither band were of my "style" so it's hard to compare the bass tones).
Cool, thanks for that. Are they all covered in the same stuff as my BT2? Must admit there's a few points in your post which were a change from the norm for me. All my previous cabs had inset handles, this is the first I've had with these type of handles, and my last few cabs had carpet type covering (ashdown mag 810 and various Warwick WCA's), but the covering has actually surprised me, it's pretty hard wearing and easy to keep clean. The metal grille was never going to be an issue for me, I don't like the silver cloth so it had to be grille! Interesting to hear your points though, thanks. Perhaps it's like having an ugly child, as a parent you can't see it or can but just won't ever admit it! 😄
6.
I dont need to test drive a car or be a car designer to know if it's not what I'm after, I dont see why bass cabs should be any different?
Very true, but I'm guessing that aesthetics would play a fairly large part in choosing a car, rightly so as there's such a vast amount of styles and designs available. If the tech specs/sound/voicing of a particular brand of cabs aren't what people want then I totally get that, my only (genuine) question is, what do people find so displeasing about the looks that makes them rule out trying one?
7. Stevie, what is it you don't like about the product? Not looking for an argument, am genuinely interested.
8. What is it about the look that people seem to dislike so much about the BF's? I'm genuinely interested. For me, once it's on stage, crammed into a backline, under stage lighting, it looks pretty much like any other black box, vertical 2x12. As for build quality, I have no experience of the Gen 1 and 2 cabs but my Gen 3 Big Twin 2 is still in as new condition. I've owned it since they were first released and it's been gigged/rehearsed, humped in and out of various cars and vans and has no battle scars as yet, apart from a scrape on the bottom rear edge which was down to me tripping up and scraping it on a sharp edged stone step. The handles and castors are still perfect. I've used it with TC RH450, RH750, GB Shuttle 9.2, ABM500, Aguilar TH500 and at a few shared backline gigs have heard others run Trace AH, Ampeg SVT 7 and GK 1001 through it, and it's always sounded great to my ears. The others that have ran through it have always complimented it too. If it was illuminous pink with wings I could maybe understand the looks thing, but I don't see how people can find a black box so offensive! As has been said though, it's a great time to be a bass player with some awesome lightweight kit on the market, so there's something to keep everyone happy....maybe!
9.
Now THAT little set up tickles my gonads!
Thanks, I've only used the TH at home volume levels but am liking it so far. Been using a GB Shuttle 9.2 but fancied something warmer. Will hopefully get to use it at band rehearsal this week. The Bongo is a beast, and the Big Twin 2 is just ridiculously good.
10. They are incredible instruments. The looks aren't for everyone, I think they look great, I am biased as I own a 4HS Stealth. I came close to selling mine, I'd struggled to get used to it. I put it into a local tech for a thorough set up and re-string with my favoured strings, and let's just say I'm very thankful that it didn't sell! They are so versatile, the tonal possibilities seem endless.
11. Just acquired a Tonehammer 500, looking forward to trying this out at in full band rehearsal
12. It should be plenty loud enough for my needs, I rarely have to push the master volume on my Shuttle 9.2 past 11 o clock. We shall see though. As I said, I'm likely going to keep the Shuttle long enough to do some A/B testing at gig volume with the band.
13. Well mine arrived today, had a quick blast with my Bongo, Sire V7 and Streamer LX through my Barefaced Big Twin 2 and am liking what I hear so far. I did think about putting my Shuttle 9.2 up for sale as soon as the TH arrived but I think I'll A/B them at a rehearsal first. First impressions are good though, nice warm tone. Looking forward to giving it a work out at volume. As an aside, and apologies for going OT, but have to say it's a miracle that I got it at all. The seller sent it with Hermes, I've been away for a couple of days and tracking it via myhermes. Checked today before heading home from Devon and was pleased to see it had been delivered and signed for (my retired neighbours take in and sign for parcels for me regularly). However when I arrived home a few hours later, I was staggered to find it wedged under the front of my wife's Mini on our driveway, in full view of anyone who walked up to our front door! So, clearly it hadn't been signed for. If, as a courier driver, you were going to leave a parcel under a vehicle, why would you choose to unsuccessfully wedge it under a Mini and leave it in full view when my VW Transprter was parked right up against the house and would have kept the parcel hidden from view?! Anyway, sorry about the OT rant, will let you know how the A/B with the Shuttle pans out!
14. There was one on here for £650 a week or so ago, and it sold more or less straight away.
15.
Likewise! I've had it for a week and thinking I'm gonna keep it! Gonna write up a long review tomorrow for those interested
What did you have previously?
16. Well, curiosity got the better of me and I've got a TH500 incoming! Be interesting to hear how it sounds paired up with my Barefaced Big Twin 2. Will spend a bit of time A/B'ing it with my Shuttle 9.2, with my Bongo, Warwick Streamer and Sire V7. I know they're very differently voiced amps, which is why I've gone for it really, to get something warmer without having to use a pedal. Actually quite excited about this!
17.
I've always wanted one of these so I could be like this guy...
Ahh that clip just never gets old!
18. Damn, didn't realise Alissia was going to be there. Been listening to her EP a lot recently.
19. Haha, I'll stick with it for a while I think. It sounds great, and that works for me! I quite like the looks of my BT2, but then again I don't think I've ever looked at a cab and thought 'wow, I love that',
20. I should probably replace mine soon, I really miss members of the audience coming up to me at the end of a gig and saying "I love the look of your cab"! 😄
21. 4 of my friends have just put one together. They were already a popular covers band, but have now put this 90's britpop thing together as a side project. I think their first gig is next month but I'd say, judging by the amount of interest their first gig is generating, that there is definitely an audience for it.
22. Big selling point for me was the fact I could take the cab, try it out for a month and if I didn't get on with it, return it. Was never in doubt once I started gigging with it, my Big Twin 2 is probably the best piece of music gear I've ever invested in. Mine's got the metal grille and I actually quite like the looks, but more importantly it sounds massive! We are pretty spoilt as bass players now, there's some epic lightweight cabs on the market.
