Very sad to read this. I was never what you might call a fan of Budgie, but was aware of them, and they still crop up on those late night compilation programmes.

He seems a very decent and philosophical bloke, I hope things improve for him.

Ah, sad news. I've always loved Budgie. So glad I got to see them a few times with the revolving door of guitar players they had toward the end!

It's comforting to read him taking it so calmly. And that's quite a magnificent beard he's got himself.

I've become adicted to the vintage pro thunderbird basses and currently have three, two sunburst and one white. All have *customised* truss rod covers and two have Gotoh GB640 res-o-lite tuners which are fantastic. I have found that EB colbalt flats 40 - 095 work really well on these basses. I don't find the necks at all chunky, they are pretty much the perfect shape for me - like a skinny jazz neck but needing fewer truss rod tweaks due to temperature and humidity changes.

I pimped mine a bit too  - Gotoh res-o-lites were added mainly because they look better than the stock Wilkinson tuners, but they are a bit smoother as well. Neck dive was never an issue in the first place.

I've also added an ebony tug bar, purely for appearances!

edit: Just realised I've added pictures of these mods earlier in the thread.

    Zombie thread resurrection.

Over a year down the line & I've only seen a couple of these come up used.

    Questions.

Have people who bought them, not moved them on cos they're fab?

    Has virtually nobody bought one?

I have one of the very early Vintage Pros with the dark fingerboard. I love it - it's everything I've ever wanted from a Thunderbird. And I love the narrow but deep neck.

Not exactly but I can see where you’re coming from. I’m doing classic rock at the moment and with keys and humbucking guitar the Precision was a bit “bulky”, all getting a bit congested. So the tighter more focused sound of the ‘Ray sprung to mind but didn’t want that real toppy high end, plus one set of flats, last me for a good while.

I think we need to see a pic of you actually playing the bass, just to be sure it isn't actually a P Bass by mistake.

Went to see a band last night and was reminded of just what a great combination a Fender Precision and a Markbass amp are. The bassist was also using an MXR M87 compressor and the sound was great, really good solid low end, nothing fancy, just a great bass sound that really locked in with the drums.

Didn't you sell me a Markbass many moons ago?

I sometimes wonder about the people in other people’s bands. In mine, if I bring a different bass, or change my sound, it’s almost always commented upon. They certainly noticed the 8!

My current band certainly noticed when I turned up with my Rickenbacker. Our singer is absolutely disgusted by them.

Another integral part of his sound was the use of a plectrum, with the follow through of the thumb. Almost a double track effect. But more than his sound, to me at least, is his sometimes odd note placement. Sometimes offbeat, sometimes on and his use of space. Great bassist, one of the true innovators and inventive.

I've always taken that with a pinch of salt. If you pick the string then hit it with your thumb you get a pinch harmonic - something CS certainly used as an effect from time to time, but it certainly wasn't a main part of his usual tone.

If you look at the Master Licks (?) Video on YouTube CS describes and demonstrates thd technique.
