First NBD in ages today, following my 18 month lay-off from playing.  Didn't turn out permanent as it turned out.....

Grabbed a lovely Miami Blue P-bass. I was wanting class, and simplicity - and this is just the job.

One issue - it's got a blemish under the lacquer of the third fret. Nothing over the lacquer, so it's a wood thing,

I spoke to Guitar Guitar straight away. They were very helpful - their explanation is that due to the current environmental laws in the US, when a tree is felled for manufacturing purposes, they have to use every part of the wood. Years ago, they'd use the best bits, and chuck the rest....nowadays, not the case.

He did offer to get pictures of all of the other in stock, and I could have it replaced. However, this being a factor in modern production, others could have similar flaws, if not more. The chap said even the Fender press shots have them at times!

He's going to send details to Fender for their take, but I can guess what will come back....

It doesn't really bother me - it plays like a dream, it's faultless. Quarter turn of the truss rod, and the action is just where I like it.

Just looking for thoughts on this - anyone had similar experience? The shop seemed genuine and helpful - I guess I'm just looking for validation from the BC community!

It looks worse in the picture than in the flesh.....am I being over-anal here?

I can't see a blemish... I assume you're referring to the stripes under the fret marker? If so, they are beautiful. Embrace the uniqueness!

Every now and then you buy something you're not sure about and it turns out perfect.

What am I waffling on about? A new strap for my pelham blue JC, that's what. 😁

I was browsing straps looking for something that maybe matched a little, rather than my usual grey or black Mono Betty. Came across a teal suede strap on Amazon, only 2.5" wide but sheepskin backed and looked quite comfy. The colour looked different in every picture, but so does the JC, and at only £20 delivered I thought I'd give it a go.

Well, now it's here it's absolutely bang on, it may as well be marketed as the 'Pelham Blue Jack Casady Bass Strap'. The blue is perfect, the sheepskin matches the pickup and scratchplate perfectly, and the tan suede back is a nod to the bronze knobs I fitted and the wooden back of the JC.

It's made a Canadian company, Perri's Leathers, and seems to be good quality, but time will tell. A bit grippier than I like, I'm weird, I like a slippery strap, I hate that grabbing at your clothes feeling, but hopefully it'll be fine. It does feel really soft and supple though which is nice. No metal adjusters or anything so can live on the bass in the case.

I've also fitted some funky strap buttons I came across. With the heel mounted button I can imagine some standard straplocks might be uncomfortable but I found some new ones with an oversized cam shape, you just twist your strap on and it stays put. I really like them, nice and smooth. The one fault, which is a huge design error really, is that as you twist your strap on, especially a new one the cam tries to turn, loosening the button. Not a problem for me as the strap is staying on, but if it was on, off, on, off, I could see it becoming a real issue.

    Anyway, pictures. 😉

Here's the Amazon link if anyone's interested, they do some other nice looking straps too.

    Excellent!

    Result!
How do you find the Hipshot? I keep hearing reports of rattling saddles or not being able to get the action low enough, which kind of put me off (particularly the last, given that my action never goes above 2 mm 12 fret E and is frequently half that).

I can't fault it. I do like low action, although not quite as low as yours so I can't guarantee it would manage that, but it goes low enough for me. I suppose the saddles could be filed if it needed to go lower.

The saddles don't rattle at all - I think the early models did but if you look closely at my picture you'll see the saddle sit in grooves now on the baseplate.

I need to be able to palm mute as well so swapping the bridge was a no-brainer for me. It's a complete improvement over the original.

    IMHO of course 😉

Do you have the new bridge, or possibly a Hipshot? That’s one of my least favourite aspects of the traditional bridge, having to recut the bridge slots to adjust individual string height.

Oh, definitely a Hipshot! It took seconds to tweak the action.

Another bonus since fitting the new pickups is that the bridge pickup is straight and the bezel now fits properly!
