Oddly timely - I've just been listening to the Jerthro Tull live in Den Haag in 1980 that comes with the Stormwatch remaster, and Pegg's bass is front and centre of everything (as is right). Filthy tone - brilliant stuff
It's so good to hear these concerts presented properly after years of (admittedly pretty good) bootlegs.
So impressed I was with Pegg's tone I actually started a thread about it a few years ago...

That said my favourite Yes album is Drama. Yep, you can throw the rocks, I assume it totally.
I'm a massive Squire/Rickenbacker disciple, but my favourite bass tone on Drame is the Thunderbird.

I've watched that video more times than I care to remember... 😆

Why can't they just demo the pedal without all the nonsense?
Exactly! The Slipknot one is disastrous.

Another comedy demo but better tones on display than the Slipknot one. At least they twiddle the knobs a bit in this one.

So would you say it's deeper than a jazz? In the pic it doesn't look like it tapers as much as a jazz either
I couldn't tell you I'm afraid!

It certainly is. I imagine my daughters (1 and 3) would find it frightening!
That Tree was truly macabre.

Cor, through-neck and everything!
I've said it before, but I really don't know why the PP configuration isn't more popular.

He may have been lying. We’d had a lot to drink by this point. I’ve just seen some of the show and it’s truly dreadful.
It's beyond dreadful, but my girls (8 and 5) love it, and it's harmless enough.

I was told by a reliable source that the celebrities pre-record their tracks and then it’s backing dancers in the costumes until the ‘big reveal’ when the celebrities finally don the outfits.
If that's true, they went to great lengths to replicate Alan Johnson's physique.

Demo's finally up!
I'm intrigued. The concept is right up my street. Most of the tones on offer here are way OTT for my needs but the sound at 1:30 is very promising.

Well I don't know, but go and take a look at their website and have it out with Alembic!
I don't want to have it out with anybody, I'm just confused by the concept of flush frets! 😆

I've had this for a few weeks now and still cant get over what a cracking bass and how good a value for money it is.
I've had a jazz itch for a while and have tried/bought and sold a couple. But wanted a specific spec e.g. lake placid blue, rosewood board, block markers etc. Was tempted by ether the g&l and Sire with at spec but ended up plumping for the more traditional.
Bought it with a bit of black Friday discount from the good folks at PMT Bristol and managed to try it against a 2nd hand Sire and a Mexican Fender they had in and the G&L played and sounded better than both especially considering the Fender was about £250 more expensive.
Had an audition for a new band so I took it along with my trusty old yamaha and got the gig and said they'd want me to use the g&l as they loved the look and the tone.
I dont know how G&L do the tribute series so cheaply but it is an absolutely cracking bass for £400. I'd absolutely recommend one over any equivalent Fenders.
I've got one of these! Hasn't been out of the case in ages though as I put flats on it... I will rectify that. It's a wonderful bass, great neck too - narrow but deep.

On the Alembic website it mentions that John's frets where flush with the fretboard enabling him to get his action super low. I read this about fifteen years ago but I cannot remember the source but I know it was not from the Alembic site.
Really? If the frets were flush with the fretboard that would render them ineffective surely?
-
It's here! And I've got a house full of guests for NYE so can't try it out...

Well, I've ordered one! It arrives tomorrow...

There’s a Status Buzzard II in the Gallery that used to belong to John and it’s got Maxima Golds on. I don’t know if it has been set up since he had it, but the action is about the same as mine. I believe someone on the Alembic Club (and poss here?) had one of his Buzzard 1s and said the same. I know that Rob Green said that he set John’s basses up and John took one look and said “they’ll go much lower than that!”, but every time my mate sent his old Status off to a Rob it came back with what we considered an almost unplayable high action, which we then had to drop several mm, so I don’t think that story means that much.
I’ve read and watched quite a few interviews with John and I’ve never heard him say anything about filing his frets to the board. I’d be interested to know where that came from.
John often said he liked the action so low that the strings were on the other side of the frets but I've never heard anything about fret filling.
Having had the pleasure of playing the Status Buzzard belonging to @Wolverinebass , I can confirm they can handle a RIDICULOUSLY low action.

Old growly Thunderbird would be the objective.
Good answer 😎
Thunderbuckers get good reviews - I had a set in a Cataldo Fenderbird a few years ago.

Honestly, I prefer the stock pickups in my Epiphone Vintage Pro - a bit livelier with more top end.
Mojos are meant to be good, and are cheaper with custom options available.

Typical old growly Thunderbird or typical modern dark Thunderbird?

Didn't John file his frets down to the board on his Spyder so that he could get super low action, or was that his Buzzard?
Dear God, no.

Used to be quite a few Luna basses & guitars on Ebay. I think the brand was intended as "instruments for gurls", in competition with the likes of Daisy Rock. I remember there being a lot of short scales and pastel pink...
I like this - really eye-catching finish and nice grain, in the pics at least. Shame it's a boring old P copy, but certainly looks good for £100-odd.
I remember when they first appeared a few years ago. IIRC it was a female-lead company. Paz Lenchantin from A Perfect Circle had a signature model.
I'm actually quite tempted to get one, it looks like a ridiculous bargain!
