    I'm in a similar boat to you Mel, although I've actually taken the plunge a couple of times and actually bought a guitar! However on both occassions I quickly became frustrated with the tiny strings and my ham-fisted attempts to play 'real' chords, and realised I could be buying bass goodies with the money so quickly sold them. Of course, I regret it each time! Like Schnozzalee I don't really get much out of playing bass at home on my own anymore*, and the days of cranking the stereo and blasting along to Live At Leeds are sadly passed. Despite not being a guitar player, I can find my way around crudely but would love to learn properly - Steve Howe being a particular inspiration. Nice and easy to aim for eh My problem is always deciding which guitar to go for. I adore hollowbodies like the Gretsch Electromatics and Epiphones, and they sound glorious, but there's another side of me that wants to play extreme metal on something sharp and heavily drop-tuned. *I remain, however, a bass player, and no amount of dabbling elsewhere will change this.

My guess would be the pickup magnets being too close to the strings and pulling them out of tune.

    Probably not much help but the sweetest Jazz pickups I've ever heard were the ones in the Roadworn.

    Mine was a copy of a Gibson EB3, courtesy of Eros, in natural finish. Cost me £20 in 1995 from a friend of my parents who was moving away. As lovely as it was I soon felt the need to 'upgrade' and a few months later was he proud owner of a limited edition Encore P bass copy - natural, unfinished body, tort scratchplate and gold hardware. My pride and joy, at the time! Alas both basses came to undignified ends. The Eros ended up as part of an art college project - I planned to strip the varnish off and re-paint a la Clapton's SG. Sadly the stripping didn't quite work and the poor thing ended up looking like it had scabies. The Encore was dismantled in an attempt to see how it all worked. It eventually got put back together but I then attempted to de-fret it - we won't go into that...

[/quote] That's an example that always seems a bit daft to me - why not just reissue the bass if there's a demand for it? Duff's was always just a stock bass after all. I've always felt the signature bass should in some way be unique to the player.

    Wow, never seen that Surfcaster before! Very nice indeed! I love the Mosrite lookalike as well, and for once the Youtube demos make them sound really good! I would love one but they are priced just a bit the wrong side of affordable for me at the moment.

    Buddy Holly - first single I ever bought. On cassette, no less! Played it to death. Never really followed their career since as I soon went fully metal and anything with pop sensibilities had to be abandoned.

    I use the Joyo Classic Flanger - the white one with the Harrier Jump Jet on the front. Very cheap but excellent sound, and no low end loss. I sold mine but bought it back soon after as it's such a great thing to have on the board.

    I'll be the lone voice here and say that the Bass Soul Food should get you that sort of drive without a problem. Not the exact tone but close enough for rock and roll, and if you listen to the original it's not got masses of drive anyway.
