Will the Bass Soul Food do a 'No One Knows' tone?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Effects
I'll be the lone voice here and say that the Bass Soul Food should get you that sort of drive without a problem. Not the exact tone but close enough for rock and roll, and if you listen to the original it's not got masses of drive anyway. -
His demos are way better than those guys that slap.
Oh, without a doubt. He just seems unable to do a Rick demo without some 'Sleep riffage' with so much fuzz it could be anything. It's all a bit self-congratulatory. If the actual bass demo, pedal free, were a bit longer and more detailed... But it's easy to moan. One day I'll pull me finger out and make some of my own 😁

Nice! Reminds me of Gene Simmons' old LoBue bass. That chap's demos do my head in though - why does he insist on playing the second half through ridiculously heavy fuzz or distortion? Every time!

Mint or dark tort.
Depends on the genre and band I suppose. Learning 20 Ramones songs would be less of a challenge than getting to grips with one Dream Theater track (IMO of course).
This.

I did it for donkey's years with an old Ibanez Blazer - essentially a Precision bass. I used a 110 or 115 as the C but I quite like a bit of rattle and growl, and it suited the type of music I was playing. I always found using a B string, for example a 130, to be a bit much, but if you're after keeping the tight feel it might be the way to go.
Wow, that is really something. Perhaps I could make the trip oop north and see it in the flesh sometime? Absolutely fantastic, a real piece of Fender history... like your rug.
I don't know either of you but I'm coming too.

That's amazing. One of the best live bass sounds I ever heard was one of these through an Orange half stack.
To bolster my theory, take The Who's gig from the Isle of Wight, 1970. I've seen this cited as an example of how a stock Precision just lacked the bite and grind inherent in the Slab circuitry. Yet, we know that John was running a simple bi-amp setup. I wager that they only mic'd up the 'bass' half of his rig. There are times when Roger Daltrey stands close to John's rig and you can hear the more typical Leeds tone bleeding into the vocal mics, which again backs up my argument. I would need to find an audience bootleg of that gig to reinforce my view, but I wager that any P bass with John's low action and zero relief setup would get the same tone through that rig. The idea of overwound pickups and 'inherent distortion' is a myth!
I've often used the IOW vs Leeds as an example of the difference between the standard Precision and a Slab (well, in this case Frankenstein). I'll admit the recording as murkier on the IOW set but to my ears the basses sound different - IOW sounds like a Precision, Leeds sounds like something more. I also disagree with the idea that IOW only represents the bass side of JE's rig, but would be intrigued to hear the change in tone when bleeding into the vocal mic - can you post a link or suggest when this happens? I firmly believe that thes basses sounded different to the standard, partly because of what I'm hearing but also because most of the players who own or owned one will confirm it! I reckon it must come down the the pickup or neck as JE's Frankenstein retains it. It's a fascinating riddle.

The first time I heard this I was absolutely howling. Very much a cathartic thing though, I had a lot bottled up at the time and for some reason this beautiful little song activated the release valve. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzniwnjXFws This one is the soundtrack to a special part of my life - it reminds me of a special person from years ago, and an aching teenage love that could never have been. Still find it difficult to listen to now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aMX8xURgjg
I was asked for some sound samples, so here is my best Will Lee impression... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7Iam5TnTKE Recorded direct, tone up full, with no effects or post-processing. The recordings start off mixed, so you can hear the bass in context. Then I gradually fade David Bowie out, to isolate the bass. 0:00 Both pickups 1:05 Neck pickup 2:08 Bridge pickup
Bravo on your choice of song!

I'm by no means a fuzz expert but out of all the ones I've tried, the only one that fuzzes the way I want is the EHX Bass Big Muff.
David, this comes from a fellow Spector player. Haven't tried myself but from what I've gathered the MM pickup is too close to the bridge on the Rebop and it makes the bass a bit thin sounding. Some Spector players installed an extra neck pickup. Again, the MM pickup is NOT in the 'sweet spot' we have come to love with the single pickup Stingrays.
Same experience here sadly. The pickup is just too close to the bridge for me.

Have any reformed bands made a really great album?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
The new Faith No More record Sol Invictus is great and their first since getting back together.
That was my first thought. Also, Van Der Graaf Generator split in the 70s, re-formed a couple of years later and recorded Godbluff and Still Life, masterpieces both. -
Need to boost my sound over rhythm guitar for solos
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Churchie's topic in Effects
Deleted as I mis-read the OP. -
I wonder if that's his real name. It would be wonderful if it is. There used to be a character called 'Constantine Isslamow' on the old Mullet Man sketches on Scuzz TV, way back when.
crack converters prices are always ridiculous, suprised they ever sell anything
Not always! Bargains can be had from time to time. I bought a BC Rich Ironbird bass from the Plumstead shop for £40. Admittedly not quite the calibre of the Warwick but still a damn good bargain I thought!

FS : Gibson SG Bass with Darkstar pickups
Cosmo Valdemar replied to lagartixas's topic in Basses For Sale
@Cosmo Valdemar : Darkstars were a reproduction of the originals Hagstrom Bisonic pickups, as are the Dagstars of Roger Daguet. He began making these pickups because Darkstars were not available anymore.
I am aware of this, but you have advertised your bass as having Darkstars, which it doesn't. It has Dagstars which have no connection to Fred Hammon's Darkstars. I just think you should alter the title as it's misleading as it is.
