A bit more obscure, but old-school Thunderbird pickups or modern versions like Thunderbuckers really are amazingly aggressive, growly things. They are naturally quite dark so I always have to push the top end a bit, but they go wonderfully with a bit of valve or valve effect drive.

I tried one - a mate's shop had a load of them which they were re-fretting for customers (?). Unfortunately I had a hideous experience with it as I'd not had much experience with the fretless way, and as it was a Rick I found myself dialling in a Geddy Lee clank and playing with my usual ham-fisted approach. It did not make a pleasant sound. However I'm sure with a different approach it would make a superb bass - there's no reason why it shouldn't.

Personally it annoys the hell out of me when I see a band in a pub playing rock covers and the bass player has the cleanest tone imaginable. Often with the horn on full. It just doesn't work for me and is as strange as if the guitarist was finger picking a jazz box with no overdrive through Smoke On The Water. This is not a pop at the OP btw, just a general observation of some local acts. That said, I would certainly not advise the bass player of how he 'should' be doing things, and if someone said as much to me tey would probably get a swift kick up the arse for their troubles.

I'm a huge fan of the Tech 21 Leeds. It's pretty much the Hiwatt version of the VT Bass. Much more to my taste than the VT as I've never been a fan of the Ampeg sound.

Too vague. I might plump for Glam, expecting Slade and Sweet etc., only to end up with some horror like Poison or Steel Panther...
