1.
Agreed.... though that's probably as much to do with him using Hartke/Ampeg live (hired) rather than his GKs.....
I just think the Lulls sound so polite!
 2.
Interestingly positioned bridge pup, there!
Interestingly positioned neck pickup!
 3.
Well, this is on it's way to me soon. 63P in faded sonic blue, with lightest relic available. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
Mother of God... That may well be the finest Limelight yet! Of course, you must fit the covers. Even if you take them off minutes later.
 4.
I assume the same that you'd use for the low B on a 5 string
That would be a bit tight... assuming the OP is in the heavier music realm, a bit of flop from a drop-tuned 4 string can be beneficial, adding some extra snarl and aggression all of it's own. It's all down to personal preference of course but for years I played in low C# tuning and found Rotosound 50-110 more than up to the job. I much prefer a downt-tuned 4 to a standard 5 in most cases. Bear in mind Troy Sanders from Mastodon frequesntly tunes to drop A and a 'standard' 105 works for him.
 5.
My main bass now is a '75 Rick 4000 mono with a set as opposed to through neck. It's bloody luverly
Pics!!!
 6.
Eddie now uses Mike Lull's live....
And doesn't sound anywhere near as good as he used to.
 7.
Interesting pics. I will definitely have to find my dental mirror now! Meanwhile, here is proof of my new purchase, complete with happy owner
There sits a happy man.
 8.
The whole Rick sound to me is a bit of a misnomer. When you put in studio work, effects pedals, strings, technique, amp/amps there is a lot that goes into making that Rick sound. Even with a couple of early 70's Ricks I struggled to get a sound like Squires. Mebbe it's just that I'm sh*te. This 4004 will do anything from JPJ to 'Arry with just tweeks of the rotaries. That'll do me.
Without a doubt. But there is that core tone I have in my head, that trebly clank, that the 4004 couldn't quite grasp. Mine seemed to have a mouch warmer, rounder sound to it. Probably makes it a lot more versatile, but a little less niche.
 9.
I did have to laugh right enough. I was watching a clip of the live from Daryls house series when they were having dinner in this beautiful setting, discussing how much they enjoyed their job, but still coming out with, oh but it's such hard work, and I thought, please? I know it's a lot of touring and travelling, but I have to do that in my job and I certainly don't get treated like they do. Hard work is very subjective and spoilt rock stars should remember that there's a lot worse ways to make a living.
Exactly. I've no doubt what they do is in no way comparable to someone doing voluntary aid work in the third world for example but within the confines of a musician, I'm sure their fairly massive tours are pretty hard going physically - especially for men of their age. I wouldn;t really consider Rush 'spoilt' either. Everything they have achieved has been solely down to their own hard work, and entirely on their own terms - an admirable trait.
 10.
Fixed.
I don't get it...
 11.
I have had a few 4001/4003 real and fake over the years. The 4004 which has only been out 20 years!!! is a great bass to play. Non of that great looking but pain in arse ironmongery round the pup, easy intonation, no skin ripped off wrist by sharp edge, bridge pup is perfect thumb rest so CAN BE PLAYED FINGERSTYLE! Do they sound like a Rick? Well, if you use two amps together, lots of effects......................
I briefly owned a 4004 a few years back, in red and gold... I wanted to love it, but it just felt terrible - the neck was this massive shapeless thing. Really wide too. Apparently they have a neck with the same dimensions as the current 4003, which would make for a far more pleasurable experience! My other complaint was that it didn't really have 'that' sound, the sound I want from a rickenbacker. Not really the fault of the bass, I know. I still think they look utterly gorgeous though.
 12. Interesting... I have the Joyo Classic Flanger and it really is very good, no loss of low-end whatsoever.
 13. Perhaps my thread title was a bit OTT... "Rickenbacker reissue old bass (very similiar to current standard)" probably would have been more appropriate.
 14. Apologies if this is a bit of a dunce question but are you actually using your nails to strike the string? I'm struggling to visualise exactly what you are doing!
 15.
I find it terrifying that some people appear to be unaware that there ever were dot-necked, unbound 'S' model Rics previously (Macca, Chris Squire, Entwistle, Pete Quaife, Maurice Gibb, Lemmy, Rutherford and Waters being famous users). I feel so old and marginalised.;-)
It's a classic look. Of course this new one is a standard 4003 with a few minor changes, rather than a true 1999 reissue, but I imagine that would have been considerably more expensive.
 16.
BTW, they're going for £1499 pretty much everywhere.
I'm 'looking into the finances' as we speak...
 17.
I'm still unsure if the OP was being sarcastic or not, having read the post again, but i'll assume yes.
No sarcasm intended! A reissue of a cool old bass, nothing more. It might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things but it's a quantum leap for Rickenbacker...
 18.
Guys that play fast with no soul and all the chops and technique in the world have never impressed me. I think it's a waste of time for young bass players to use these sort of guys as bench marks. Chances are you'll never sound like him or have the ability to play like that. Blue
Damn pesky kids with your long hair and your rock and roll music!
 19.
Peart's repeatedly said how much he hates touring, and he's frequently made it clear that he despises his audience.
Does he really despise us? When has he said this? Not being argumentative or contrary here, I would honestly like to know!
 20.
i guess they're hoping people will spend £600 on something that will do several jobs poorly, rather than spend a few hundred quid more on separate items that will do the job properly. anyone wanting decent recording quality will get a proper audio interface. anyone wanting a decent amp / cab will buy something not made by ashdown. anyone wanting a decent wireless system will buy a decent wireless system.
Comically sweeping statements like that make me less inclined to give serious consideration to the rest of your comment.
 21. Just sold a spare Tonepump preamp to this chap Discreet... definitely one of BC's 'top gents', deal with pleasure and confidence.
