1. Four classic issues of Bassist magazine direct to my door and completely free of charge. He wouldn't even accept a penny for postage. That's Kevin. A true Basschat hero.
2. I am now in possession of Dan's Tech 21 VT bass. An impulse purchase that seems to be paying off, it's a wonderful device! No problems dealing with Dan whatsoever, deal with confidence and good cheer!
3.
I'm a big fan of a lot of horror soundtracks, and I do pin the blame firmly with John Carpenter. I have been a vinyl subscriber with a label called Death Waltz Recordings who have reissued a lot of the Carpenter scores on vinyl oer the last few years, amongst other great and weird releases. A few personal faves have to be the soundtrack by Antoni Maiovvito a short film called 'Yellow', the soundtrack to 'Beyond the Black Rainbow' by Sinoia Caves (Jeremy Schmidt from Black Mountain) and the soundtrack to the Shining conspircay documentary called 'Room 237' by Jonathan Snipes & William Hudson. The whole synth sound of horror soundtracks that I like also spills over into a few really cool bands that I like, such as Zombi, The Slasher Film Festival Strategy and Pye Corner Audio. 'Drokk: Music inspired by Megacity One' by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury is another excellent example of a soundtrack style album. I look forward to listening later on.
4.
The Legend of Hell House by Brian Hodgson and Delia Derbyshire (BBC Radiophonic Workshop bods moonlighting) )
Yes!
5. The African Hardwood doesn't look very striking to me... That Jazzmaster, though...
6. Just order one online and return it if you don't get on with it. And you get to try it at home with your own gear. The joys of internet shopping!
7. Anything by Goblin, particularly Profondo Rosso and Suspiria. Alan Price's songs from O Lucky Man Air's soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides is gorgeous - one day I'll get round to watching the film! I've got lots of compilations of various wonderful scores from the old Hammer films but regrettable few complete soundtracks. And of course, Queen's Flash Gordon and A Kind of Magic, which ih the Highlander soundtrack in all but name. Gimme the prize!
8. I once played the majority of a set with flange... We had a horrendous on-stage sound and didn't even notice. Apparently it sounded good out the front so lord knows what the audience made of it.
9. Great basses but everything about them is big - neck, string spacing, body. They feel very different to the SDGRs. They sound good though and the B is excellent.
10. I've got one just like that - it's a superb bass. Someone's going to get a bargain.
11. Looks a lot like the Fernandes Gravity to me!
12.
I was recently on there and found a nice little vid of a chap who put EMGs in his Ray5. It got to about 3 replies before it was locked!!
Seriously?!
13.
I don't like imbalance of new and old so I'd have the whole set off...clean them up and use them another time. When I change strings, I change them all...
This. I'd go mad if one string was noticeably brighter than the others. the only time I've bought single strings have been when I over-tightened an E as an enthusiastic beginner, and when I had a duff A string and needed a replacement pronto for that evening's gig (the manufacturer of the offending string replaced the whole set for free).
14.
Just looking at my Spector. The top horn does look a bit like an ergonomic marital aid. That strap-pin would bring a tear to your eye.
Perhaps that's why Warwick, having half-inched the design, felt compelled to go one better with the Fortress.
15.
I did wonder where I was going to anchor my thumb when playing fingerstyle. That MM pickup looks unsuitable for the purpose.
It is really far back isn't it? I wonder why they didn't put it in the tried and tested traditional Stingray position...
16.
i just want a furry caterpillar now!!
Very rare these days, PM me and we'll thrash out a deal.
17.
That's a really nice-looking LX - the finish looks like one big piece of vintage tort. How are you with the bridge? When I found there were no intonation screws I thought it a bit weird, but it's actually really easy to move the saddles by hand. I like the way the bridge is lockable, too - when everything's set you your liking you can lock it up tight and effectively it becomes a solid chunk of metal, only with your preferred action, spacing and intonation. Really good bit of design, ihmo. By popular demand Spector now make a bridge with intonation screws, but I prefer it without. When the bridge is locked you get no rattling or weird noises like you can with... 'other' bridges. Fantastic acquisition, and a cautionary tale, too - obviously if you sell your Spector, sooner or later you have to replace it!
I'm ashamed to admit I avoid fiddling with bridges and necks. Pathetic I know. But my guitarist is a professional guitar tech so it seems daft not to let him do the magic, and all at mate's rates. It's such a stunning piece of design though, that bridge. The newer ones just don't look right.
I'd quite like the MM4 with the matte blue finish, maple neck and black crown inlays...
I love the Rebops, but the ergonomincs annoy me sadly they have a tiny (narrower than the Euro) body and a thick heavy neck. Resulting in neck dive and an odd weight distribution. That said, they sound immense, and I would love to own another one day! Despite the stunning looks, I didn't get on with the MM I tried. That pickup placement just doesn't do it for me, it's too close to the bridge. Perfect for the funkier stuff I'm sure but far too tight and snappy for me, I like a looser growl.
18. Veeeeery nice! That Gene Simmons tone at the beginning is spot on.
19. Looks great. I loved the feel of the Dingwall I tried at the bass show a couple of years ago (and had a good old chat with the affable Mr D himself) but the basic tone of the bass did nothing for me sadly.
20. I've actually had this beauty since just before Xmas, an wasn't going to do a NBD thread but was politely bamboozled into it by one of our more esteemed members. So Discreet, this is for you! It's used but in near perfect condition. I've ordered a replacement TonePump as it's currently wearing the non-adjustable version which is far too hot for me. I won't go into too much detail about the Euro itself as Discreet's recent thread on the same subject was comprehensive. Needless to say, this is my tenth (!) Spector, sadly I don't own them all anymore but it does show how much of an addiction these basses can be! They really are colossally good. A couple of quick phone pics (the best I can manage). In 'real life' it's a deeper red and the quilt is more pronounced.
