Memory can play tricks on us all, but I just double checked and according to Martin's autobiography No Easy Road (page 111 to be precise). It is all explained in some detail: essentially two months passed between recording Argus and album release during which time Martin made the transition for the Rickenbacker to a Thunderbird for gigging when the "live" inner gate fold sleeve shots were taken Plus Ricky 4001s of the early 70s era (I had one: why did i ever sell it) used to have adjustable rubber mutes under the bridge cover to facilitate muting, so the palm muting effect would have been very possible. I'd thought I'd lost my Anorak!
I've got that book. He's wrong. The sound of Argus cannot be replicated with a Rick - the pickups are in the wrong place. There's lots of clips on YT of recent MT Ash gigs, some with the Rick - it sounds totally different. re: foam mutes - these are troublesome things that cannot be switched on and off at will. MT's only palm mutes here and there on Argus and often quickly reverts to standard picking - the intro to 'Blowin' Free' and the verses of 'Time Was' for example. I have a Cataldo bass - essentially a Thunderbird with a maple bolt-on neck and repro 60s pickups - and on the front pickup only (as per MT) it's instant Argus.
Imagine my consternation, when Martin told me years later, that despite the Argus sleeve pic with a T'Bird he actually used a Ricky 4001 for recording that album!!! So your Good to Go Ez old boy!
I hate to be 'that person' but Martin's memory is playing tricks on him. Argus is a Thunderbird. Pilgrimage is the Rick. Completely different sounds. Argus is also full of palm-muting which he couldn't have done with his Rick.

What have I bought? A one off? A small run Burns?

A 34" Marquee bass... I want it! -
A ridiculous bargain!

Players who's tone you love but would never use yourself.
John Entwhistle. A lot of people think the sun shined out of his arse, but I am not a fan of his clanky twang.
Missing the point of the thread entirely 😉 -

I love Peter Steele's tone - massively distorted and drenched in howling feedback. It's so unique that anyone who gets even remotely close to sounding like it would be accused of ripping off his sound. Also, as mentioned above, it wouldn't really work for wedding gigs. -
Cosmo, the guy is good, he will sound good on any bass. It's the way this stuff works. Blue
He probably would sound good on any bass, but your original point was, "I think he would have a similar tone and sound regardless of what bass he was playing, IMO", which is ridiculous - an Epiphone Rivoli with dead flats would not sound the same as the Alembic in the clip. The result would would probably still sound like the same player but the tone would be polar opposite.

How to get a sound like a Rick, without a Rick?
Chris Squire made a Fender J sound just like his Ric
I always though his Jazz sounded noticeably different - thicker and burpier, and less aggresive. -
Would you be interested in a Gibson Bass Book?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Basvarken's topic in Bass Guitars
Looks great - very interested! Although I fear it may make me regret selilng my Ripper... -
The headstock suggests it isn't a standard MIM... Looks like a 60s reissue to me.
Cracking site ped. However the 'early dean' pictured there looks more like a vigier to me
Yep. Vigier Arpege.
He is a visionary - continually pushing the boundaries of composition and noise. I love his glitchy sonic spasms. I'm less keen on his bass playing - more into the electronic stuff.
I'm the opposite - his bass playing is what impresses me. His early stuff leaves me cold, but I saw him live at ATP in the small hours, and - top of my head blew off. It was soon after the release of 'Just a Souvenir', just him, a drummer and a laptop or two. An unforgettable experience.

From your description I'm guessing... Ibanez Ergodyne?

Any of you cover/pub bands run with two drummers ?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
The Melvins didn't bring their second drummer when I saw them recently, but live videos I've seen suggest it would have been brilliant if they had.
I can confirm it was! And if course there were 3 drummers in King Crimson's current formation... Astounding to experience live. If anything it was slightly overpowering at times, the sheer force of the sound. -

I've had experience with two drummer bands. Pros - immense sonic impact, novelty value (people really pay attention). Cons - both drummers have to be completely locked in or it's a shambles. Organaisational headache. For a covers/pub band? Pointless IMHO. -
Who often tuned the guitar a tone flat when recording, so things like My generation were played in A but came out in G on the record, the guitar riff is an open A with the G added the same chord.
Don't think they did... My Generation was originally recorded in G but played in A live from the late 60s onward, probably for ease. They would sometimes change keys live to make the song easier to play - Sparks from Tommy is another example - the big descending bass riff in the second part was always played in E live, like the opening riff, wheras on record it's in C#. Probably to make Townshend's complex chords a bit easier to pull off after a bottle of brandy.
I don't know what an Hz is. For me punch is a delicate balance of your high and low end, clean with just the right amount if sustain. Back in the 70s when I was able to manage an SVT, you flipped the on switch and you had punch right out of the gate. Now with my GK 1001rb w/ 2 10s stacked on top of a 1 15 RBX cab and a fully loaded pedal board, I struggle to dial in the punch I would like. Blue
So the tone is all in your fingers, but the punch is in the amp?
If your playing songs by Korn, heavy distortion might come into the picture.
Sure, if you want to sound nothing like Korn...
