'66 Slab Precision...Anyone seen one/got one?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in Bass Guitars
Okay! firstly its not a P Bass! Its a 1966 'Telecaster Bass'! It just happens to look like a P Bass. I have played an original 66 that was owned by John Entwistle. It was quite heavy with ash body not swamp ash. I've had the pleasure of chatting with Barrie Midford-Millership who was the creator of the slab. It was his 'baby'! You need to read is book. Its all in there.
And secondly? It does seem to say 'Precision Bass' on the headstock... -

Well, not a lot to report sadly. The gig was in a large, ornate hall complete with chandelier and stone pillars. A complete echo chamber. I couldn't put the cabs against a wall, never mind a corner, so the onstage sound was just horrendous. Very unsatisfying bass sound, seemingly lacking a lot of low end, but I'm hoping it was the fault of the room as we were all suffering equally. I got through the gig despite struggling to hear myself (we had set the volume levels for the best sound out front) and managed to have a good time. Apparently everything sounded great out front and we had everyone dancing throughtout. We went down a storm and got great feedback so job done I suppose! Now seriously considering upgrading the band PA and switching to in ear monitors.

I want to know what the basses are!
Here is a comparison between my Walnut 2014 4003 and my 2013 Jetglo 4003. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0arxQI6oy8s
Lovely tone to both - the walnut one sounds a bit snappier at the top. Cheers George, now I want another Rick. :-D
The one I played was spot-on. Very well finished
The one I tried had a lot of finish issues around the F hole, and the side of the neck appeared to be somewhat gluey - not sticky but it looked like the fingerboard had been attached a bit haphazardly. It did play nicely but the E kept jumping out of the saddle when I played. I really wanted the bass and had the other one in the shop been up to scratch I'm sure I would have bought it but the staff seemed to be having a bad day, very disorganised. I still want one though
How did it compare with the Coronado?
I know this was aimed at someone else but I tried a Coronado and a Starcaster at the same time. I found the Coronado to be very dull and uninspiring, with quite a low output. The Starcaster was the loudest and most aggressive if the trio, but quite heavy with it. Of course, all three basses were wearing factory rounds which didn't do them any favours whatsoever... -
Really? Never seen pics of JW with either of those? Only ever seen him with his Ps and more recently Gibsons and Zons, etc. And I heard he had a Clarke Spellbinder too. I'd have thought he'd have avoided a Rick on Asia to avoid Squire comparisons?
The Jazz was often lurking as a backup during the KC era - black with maple neck and block inlays. It can be seen in various live pics from that era, looking very sorry for itself while the Precision sees all the action! The Jazz was also used in the Heat of The Moment promo. As for the Rick, Wetton himself said that is what he played on the Asia debut album. Incredible sound. I thought it was a Jazz for years thanks to the aforementioned video.

So have I! Forgot to post on here though. I went to Andertons a with the cash in hand but was sadly disappointed with the bass. The sound was lovely but the QC was shoddy. They had another in the stock room which I had requested to see but after nearly an hour of waiting I left. -
"Mountain Lass" got the nod. The first song I played on her was, Never In My Life, by Mountain.
Beautiful!
Also I second the mention of tone... his gritty P-bass tone on the first UK album is to die for...
That's a Jazz! But agreed, his tone is incredible, particularly the live KC stuff and the Rick on the first Asia album.
i dont believe so - wasnt that some sort of bowing/rapid plucking device? http://gizmotron.org/
I love that.
Alright! It showed up today. I didn't get a chance to do much more than restring her, and do a good look-over. The frets a bit rough on the edges of the fretboard, but not the roughest of Gibson's I've had. Now to name her. Hmmmmmm,……...
Deirdre
I`m rather tempted by one of these, with the matching 212 cab (the 410 may a bit weighty). Can`t see it not having enough volume for me. Ben, keep us posted on your experiences with this amp, I`m sure if it does the sound you go for it will do what I`d be after.
Will do mate! Watch this space. Gig on Saturday, a wedding no less! Can it handle the Bee Gees? Report should follow on Sunday.
Nice one mate! I nearly went for one of these but ended up going for the MiBass 2.0, don't make me regret it What cabs you planning on using with this? I reckon a Rootmaster 420 and a Mi12 cab would make a really great gigging/rehearsal set up! Edue
I'm using two Gallien Krueger NEO 112s, stacked vertically. Excellent cabs that seem to work well with anything. I did consider getting a couple of Mi12s but the horn being on all the time put me right off. Me and horns don't mix

Well it's here... And I am very impressed. Instant classic Ashdown tone (if that's not your thing, this really isn't the amp for you), very warm (not muddy) but with plenty of grit and bite if you want it. Excellent drive control, despite the absence of any valves, and very reminiscent of my old ABM 500 but without the size and weight. I've been using a Mibass for a while and really haven't got on with it - the comprehensive EQ and tone shaping isn't something I need and I found myself constantly twiddling the knobs and sliders. With the Rootmaster, it sounds great straight away, before the EQ is even adjusted. It's heavier than the other lightweight amps I've owned (GK, Markbass, Ashdown) but it is a bit larger. I'm not even sure if it is in the same category as those, but it's certainly much lighter than the ABM. So far I've only played it indoors but so far I'm really chuffed. I think Ashdown are on to a winner here, and I'm very happy. Live test on Saturday!
